Aspects of mechanical deformability and biorheology of the human red blood cell are known to play a pivotal role in influencing organ function as well as states of overall health and disease. In this article, consequences of alterations to the membrane and cytoskeletal molecular structure of the human red blood cell are considered in the context of an infectious disease,Plasmodium falciparummalaria, and several hereditary hemolytic disorders: spherocytosis, elliptocytosis, and sickle cell anemia. In each of these cases, the effects of altered cell shape or molecular structure on cell elasticity, motility, and biorheology are examined. These examples are used to gain broad perspectives on the connections among cell and subcellular structure, properties, and disease at the intersections of engineering, biology, and medicine.

Microencapsulated n-octadecane (MicroC18) and doped with thermochromatic powders (TC-MicroC18) were prepared with melamine-formaldehyde (M-F) resin as the wall via in-situ polymerization. The chemical structure and thermal behavior of microcapsules were investigated using fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Experimental results show that 63 wt% n-C18 has been incorporated into microcapsules, and the obvious thermochromatic effect of TC-MicroC18 is displayed with temperature changing. The structure-properties of TC-MicroC18 also is discussed in detail from the aspect of molecular structure.

Our first modern global pandemic is caused by a nanosized lipid vesicle, called SARS-CoV-2. Its molecular structure and biogenesis have remarkable similarities with Extracellular Vesicles (EVs, most notably exosomes) that are constantly shed by all cells during their life. Their resemblance may not be a coincidence. Growing body of evidence has shown that EVs have significant roles in various biological processes, including viral infection, transmission and anti-viral response. Drawing comparison with the virus might shed light on how we could fight the COVID-19 disease. This may include novel EV research and diagnostics technologies as well as novel EV-based treatments.

The molecular structure of {2-[(CH3)2NCH2]C6H4}2Pb (1) in the solid state was determined by X-ray diffraction techniques on a single crystalline material. Bulky amido ligand stabilized complexes [(i-C3H7)2C6H3]NHLi (2) and [(i-C3H7)2C6H3N(Me3Si)]2Pb (3) were synthesized and characterized both in the solid state and solution by 1H, 13C, 15N and 207Pb NMR and XRD techniques. The structure of both C,N-chelated and bulky amido plumbylenes is compared.
