Malang Regency has a large area of dry land and currently being developed as a center for food crops, especially corn. Corn production in Malang Regency has not provided high productivity, one of which is in Wagir Regency. This study aims to determine the actual land suitability class, determine the characteristics of the land that affects the productivity of corn, determine the actual productivity class of corn, and develop new land suitability criteria using the boundary line method. This research was conducted in May - September 2019 in Wagir District, Malang, using a physiographic survey method based on the Land Mapping Unit. Soil samples were taken at a depth of 0-120 cm (minipit and drilling) at each observation points (42 points) and analyzed in the laboratory (texture, pH, CEC, C-Organic, BS, N-total, P2O5, Potassium, Ca, Mg, and Na). The determination of land suitability class is carried out using the SPKL (Sistem penilaian kesesuaian lahan) application and the modification of the criteria is carried out using the boundary line method. The results of the land suitability evaluation according to the criteria of Ritung et al. (2011) in Wagir District, Malang Regency, included in class S3 and N, with limiting factors in rainfall, Base Saturation, pH, C-Organic, N-total, P2O5, Potassium, slope and erosion hazard. Stepwise analysis result showed that slope and air temperature determined corn productivity in research area. Boundary lines analysis gave results that modified suitability classified as S3 and N which is the same category as actual suitability classes.

Food cultivation, especially upland rice is needed to fulfill the needs of dryland food. It is necessary to evaluate the suitability of the land so that it can overcome land constraints to increase the productivity of upland rice in Tirtomoyo Regency. The unit of analysis is Soil Mapping Unit based on soil type map using ArcGIS 10.1 and determination of sample point based on purposive sampling method. Data analysis was done by matching between the result of soil characteristic which has been obtained with growth requirement of the upland rice. Based on the results, District Tirtomoyo divided into 4 Soil Mapping Unit. The actual land suitability class for upland rice is moderately suitable (S2) and not suitable (N). Limiting factors include rainfall, slope, erosion hazard, basic saturation, CEC, C-organic, N-total, K<sub>2</sub>O. Improvement efforts are done by arranging cropping pattern, drainage management, a making of terracing, cover crop planting, implementing organic material, and fertilizing. The suitability class of potential land of upland rice is highly suitable (S1) and marginally suitable (S3).

Pauh District was chosen as mangosteen plantation development centre in Padang City. This development should be based on the land suitability so that the mangosteen plant are able to grow according to the climate and soil conditions. This research was conducted in Pauh District, Padang City and Soil Science Laboratory Andalas University. This study used a survey method that consisted of preparation, pre-survey, the main surveiy, laboratory analysis, and data processing. Evaluation of land suitability was done with matching method which compare the characteristics of land suitability for mangosteen growth. The results of research showed that land suitability for mangosteen was classified into S3 (marginally suitable) with subclass S3nr for land unit SL1, SL2, SL3, SL4, SL7, SL8, SL9, SL11, SL15; subclass S3eh for land unit SL14; subclass S3nr,eh for land unit SL5 and SL10. Land unit SL6, SL12, SL13, and SL16 were classified into S2 (moderately suitable) with subclass S2wa,nr for land unit SL6 and SL16; subclass S2wa,rc,nr,eh for land unit SL12; subclass S2wa,rc,nr for land unit SL13. The limiting factors was common to each land unit were nutrient retention (nr) and erosion (eh). There are 3 villages (Lambung Bukit, Limau Manis, and South Limau Manis) in Pauh District which have the greatest potential to be developed as mangosteen plantation development areas with total area was 5,862.42 ha.

Abstract This research of aims are determine the condition of land characteristics, land suitability for dragon fruit plants in the research area. The method used in the study is a survey method with mapping of land units The research show as follows: 1. land characteristics: a) climate: rainfall 3117.8 mm/year, b) elevation: the criteria are very good because all land units are between 0 - 350 elevation c) slope: divided into three (3) classes namely class is flat, sloping, slightly tilted d) the texture of the soil is sandy loam, sandy clay, loamy sand, silt loam, silty clay, e) ph soil is dominated by a class of very good pH 5-7, f) nitrogen is divided into four (4) classes namely very good, good class, rather ugly class, bad class, g) phosphorus is divided into 3 classes, namely: very good, good class, rather ugly class, h) potassium: all land units have very good potassium class. 2. Land suitability level: all land units in the research location in Kuranji District have a fairly suitable level of suitability or enough potential as a place for growth and development of dragon fruit plants. Lewa sub-district is one of the sub-districts in East Sumba Regency, which has dry land that can be maximized for the development of porang plants and development purposes; information on the potential of porang plantations is needed. This study aimed to determine the biophysical characteristics of the land and the land suitability class of porang plants. The analytical method used was the matching method by comparing the land characteristics and plant growth requirements and the overlay method. The matching results show that the land characteristics in Lewa Subdistrict are class S1 (Very suitable), covering an area of 26.220,209 ha and Class S2 (quite suitable), covering an area of 3.608,523 ha. Limiting factors in this area are water availability (OA) such as drainage, nutrient retention (nr) such as CEC and pH, and erosion hazards (eh) such as slope.

Pepper (Piper nigrum L.) has a high selling value. The price of pepper in the domestic or international market that is always high can be a great opportunity to increase farmers’ income. Tirtomoyo District is dominated by hilly areas with common soil types of Litosol and Latosol. As one of the efforts to develop the regional economic rate, especially in hilly areas, pepper cultivation can be a solution offered by the agricultural sector. The study was conducted using an explorative descriptive survey method consisting of field observation and laboratory analysis. The analytical unit used was Land Map Unit (LMU) obtained from soil map. The sampling sites were selected using purposive sampling method according to the research objectives and representing the study area. The results show that the actual land suitability for pepper in Tirtomoyo District is marginally suitable (S3) for all LMU. The main limiting factors are water availability and nutrient availability, thus the Tirtomoyo district still have potency for pepper cultivation by applying some improvement measures such as fertilization, irrigation, organic material addition, and cover crop planting.

A decrease in the area of soybean farming has an effect on reducing soybean production from year to year so that it has not been able to meet the needs of national soybean consumption. Land suitability assessment is an effort to be able to optimize land use. In the process of assessing land suitability manually, it is considered inaccurate. The purpose of this study was to determine the land suitability class for soybean plants. The land suitability classification system used is the FAO land suitability classification classified at the sub-class level. Land suitability evaluation uses a matching system, as well as comparing the characteristics of land with plant growing community formulated in the technical evaluation of land guidelines for agricultural commodities. In the matching process Leibig's minimum law is used to determine the limiting factors that will affect the suitability of the class and sub-class of the land. Requirements for growing plants become kiteria in conformity evaluation. The results showed that the limiting factors of land suitability for soybean plants that had to be improved were temperature, rainfall, soil texture, C-Organic, N-Total and P-Available soil. The limiting factor of temperature and soil texture cannot be improved so that the marginal fit class (S3) on actual land suitability remains marginal fit (S3) in terms of potential land suitability.

To support Indonesian’s food self-sufficiency program, more quantitative and accurate data are required on the character of soil data needed, which can be more easily understood, practical and suitable for crop selection as well as for the right fertilizer recommendations to support the agribusiness development, implementation and operation. The purpose of this research is to develop and assess soil quality in relation to the productivity of major food crops by using Soil Quality Score Plus (SQS Plus) to support agribusiness-based management of dry lands. The use of SQS for assessing soil quality in principle determines the weighted average score obtained from the score of each selected key parameter multiplied by its weight. The SQS for the 36 locations observed varies from 2.36 (low) to 4.12 (high). SQS Plus adds letter(s) after a score to indicate the limiting factor(s) of soil ecosystem. The most limiting factor is low carbon organic content (72.2 % from the 36 locations observed), followed by low P availability (58.3%), and low total organic N (41.7%). Data of correlation between SQS and crop productivity is not good as expected.  Crop growth and crop production are not only determined by soil quality and its limiting factors.   Keywords: Crop productivity, dry land management, soil limiting factors, soil quality assessment, Soil Quality Score

The aim of the study was to determine the level of suitability of wetland rice fields in the area before flash floods and post flash floods Lawe Tua Makmur Village, Lawe Alas Subdistrict, Southeast Aceh Regency and soil analysis at the Research and Development Laboratory of PT. Nusa Pusaka Kencana Analytical & Qc. Laboratory Bahilang Tebing Tinggi Medan in April 2016 and December 2017. It is carried out by a survey method that refers to the extent of the limiting factor of land characteristics. Data from observations in the field and data from laboratory analysis were matched to the criteria for the suitability of wetland rice classes. The results showed that the actual land suitability class for paddy rice in the area prior to banjir bandang was according to marginal / S3 (r, f) and the potential land suitability class was marginal / S3 (r). Actual land suitability class for wetland crops in the post-banjir bandang area according to marginal / S3 (r, f, n) and potential land suitability classes according to marginal / S3 (r). The limiting factor is the permanent texture of the soil so that it cannot be repaired and the limiting factors of CEC, organic C and N-total can still be improved by adding organic matter and fertilizing with nitrogen.

This study attempted to assess the soil suitability in the derived savanna zone of Edo State, Nigeria for the cultivation of some tree crops. The research specifically aimed to evaluate soil suitability for cashew and rubber supported by suitability maps for both crops. In terms of land suitability evaluation, mapping units 1 and 2, with an area coverage of 27.4 ha of the entire research area (100 ha) were found to be marginally suitable (S3) for rubber cultivation but moderately suitable (S2) for cashew. Mapping unit 3, with area coverage of 38 ha was found to be currently not suitable (N1) for rubber but marginally suitable (S3) for cashew cultivation. Mapping unit 4 representing area coverage of 34.7 ha was found to be permanently not suitable (N2) for rubber cultivation but marginally suitable (S3) for cashew. Thus, technically, rubber can only be cultivated in that land at marginal level with an expected productivity of 27.4 ha (27.4 %). Cashew can be cultivated at moderate and marginal levels with an expected yield of 27.4 ha (27.4 %) and 72.6 ha (72.6 %), respectively, of the total land area. Thus, the preferred crop for the studied is cashew. It is recommended that for any significant investment in cultivation of this crop, the priority is the moderate levels with an expected productivity of 27.4 ha or 27.4 % of total land area.

Abstract Increasing rice production is not only relied on from irrigated and rainfed rice fields, but also on dry land (upland rice). Development of upland rice on sub-optimal lands is one of the efforts to overcome the problem of vulnerability to rice availability, but until now its management is still not optimal. Minahasa District is one of the upland rice producing districts in North Sulawesi. This paper aims to identify matters related to sub-optimal land use for the sustainability of upland rice farming by farmers that can be developed in support of efforts to increase upland rice production in North Sulawesi, in addition to improving the existing technology used by farmers. This study was conducted in the Tombariri Subdistrict, Minahasa District, using a survey method. Data collection was carried out through field observations, surveys, documentation, in-depth interviews with key informants, and literature studies. The data obtained were then analyzed descriptively. Based on field identification and the results of the study, it was found that the existing local farmers’ technology was still very simple, especially in the aspects of seed supply, planting and maintenance. Farmers are increasingly pursuing development towards organic farming. There are still many sub-optimal land uses that can be optimized for upland rice cultivation accompanied by improvements to the existing limiting factors on each land.
