A Japanese Scale to Assess Anxiety Severity: Development and Psychometric Evaluation

Objective: This study developed a Japanese self-rating anxiety scale, the Himorogi Self-rating Anxiety Scale (HSAS), and tested psychometric properties of its use in Japanese psychiatric patients. Methods: The process of developing the scale consisted of an intensive literature review, assessment of existing instruments, and detailed discussion on the content of the newly developed scale. Data for psychometric evaluation were collected from 419 outpatients of psychiatric clinics. The Hamilton Rating Scale for Anxiety Interview Guide (HAMA-IG) and the Sheehan Patient Rated Anxiety Scale (SPRAS) were used as standards against which the HSAS was compared. Results: Confirmatory factor analysis revealed a unifactorial nature for the HSAS and fewer insignificant items in the HSAS than the HAMA-IG and the SPRAS. Cronbach's alpha and test-retest coefficients indicated sufficient reliability. High correlation with the HAMA-IG and the SPRAS indicated evidence of convergence for the HSAS. ROC analysis showed high ability to distinguish between the presence and absence or remission of anxiety. Analysis of descriptive data suggested a larger dynamic range for the HSAS than the HAMA-IG and the SPRAS. Conclusions: The HSAS is a brief scale to assess anxiety severity, demonstrating evidence of good psychometric properties. It is recommended for use in research and clinical practice.

This study examined the psychometric properties of the Achievement Goal Questionnaire–Revised (AGQ-R) in a sample of Singapore secondary students ( N = 1,171). Confirmatory factor analyses provided support for the AGQ-R in measuring the four achievements goals delineated in the 2 × 2 framework. Measurement invariance across ethnic groups was supported via multigroup analysis. Multidimensional Rasch analysis revealed that only one item on the instrument showed a slight misfit, and the distribution of items also matched reasonably well with students’ achievement goals levels, though there were some students on the upper end of the continuum whose positions were not well-covered. Examination of the 5-point rating scale showed that while the response categories demonstrated monotonicity, two of the lower categories were not clearly differentiated. These findings suggest that the AGQ-R has adequate psychometric properties for use with school-aged students in Singapore, but a rating scale with fewer categories should be considered.

In this article the psychometric properties of an Abilities Assessment Instrument (AAI), developed to assess the self-care, social, interactional and interpretive abilities of older people with cognitive impairment (CI) related to dementia, are described. The sample consisted of 112 institutionalized older men with CI and 60 institutionalized older men without CI. The psychometric evaluation of the AAI indicated that: (a) it is reliable in terms of test-retest (Pearson’s r range .93-.99), interrater (Pearson’s r range .95-.99), and internal consistency evaluations (Cronbach’s alpha .90-.98), as well as through confirmatory factor analysis; and (b) that it is valid with respect to content validity (CVI 87.3%), concurrent validity (Pearson’s r correlations ranging from -.67-.80 on the London Psychogeriatric Rating Scale [LPRS], and from -.76-.85 on the Functional Assessment Stages Scale [FAST]), and construct validity with significant differences between subjects with and without CI (t values ranging from 5.13 -9.30). The AAI is a reliable and valid instrument that can be used to provide assessment data.

BACKGROUND Mobile health apps (MHA) have the potential to improve health care. The commercial MHA market is rapidly growing, but the content and quality of available MHA are unknown. Consequently, instruments of high psychometric quality for the assessment of the quality and content of MHA are highly needed. The Mobile Application Rating Scale (MARS) is one of the most widely used tools to evaluate the quality of MHA in various health domains. Only few validation studies investigating its psychometric quality exist with selected samples of MHAs. No study has evaluated the construct validity of the MARS and concurrent validity to other instruments. OBJECTIVE This study evaluates the construct validity, concurrent validity, reliability, and objectivity, of the MARS. METHODS MARS scoring data was pooled from 15 international app quality reviews to evaluate the psychometric properties of the MARS. The MARS measures app quality across four dimensions: engagement, functionality, aesthetics and information quality. App quality is determined for each dimension and overall. Construct validity was evaluated by assessing related competing confirmatory models that were explored by confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). A combination of non-centrality (RMSEA), incremental (CFI, TLI) and residual (SRMR) fit indices was used to evaluate the goodness of fit. As a measure of concurrent validity, the correlations between the MARS and 1) another quality assessment tool called ENLIGHT, and 2) user star-rating extracted from app stores were investigated. Reliability was determined using Omega. Objectivity was assessed in terms of intra-class correlation. RESULTS In total, MARS ratings from 1,299 MHA covering 15 different health domains were pooled for the analysis. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed a bifactor model with a general quality factor and an additional factor for each subdimension (RMSEA=0.074, TLI=0.922, CFI=0.940, SRMR=0.059). Reliability was good to excellent (Omega 0.79 to 0.93). Objectivity was high (ICC=0.82). The overall MARS rating was positively associated with ENLIGHT (r=0.91, P<0.01) and user-ratings (r=0.14, P<0.01). CONCLUSIONS he psychometric evaluation of the MARS demonstrated its suitability for the quality assessment of MHAs. As such, the MARS could be used to make the quality of MHA transparent to health care stakeholders and patients. Future studies could extend the present findings by investigating the re-test reliability and predictive validity of the MARS.

The purpose of the present study was to adapt COVID-19 Induced Anxiety Scale (CIAS) and Protective Behaviors towards COVID-19 Scale (PBCS) into Turkish language, and to investigate their psychometric properties. 593 adults participated in the study. Data were collected through CIAS and PBCS as well as The Fear of COVID-19 Scale (FCS). Cronbach alpha (α) and McDonald’s Omega (ω) coefficients were utilized for reliability of the Turkish forms of the scales, and validity of the scales was tested with exploratory factor analysis, confirmatory factor analysis and criterion validity. The analysis showed that α and ω reliability coefficients of both scales were over .70. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses revealed that CIAS had a single factor structure while PBCS had three dimensions as indicated in original forms of the scales. Significant and positive relationships were also found between the scores obtained from CIAS and PBCS and fear scores. To conclude, Turkish forms of CIAS and PBCS were proved to be valid and reliable tools to measure severity of COVID-19 induced anxiety through CIAS and individuals’ protective behaviors towards COVID-19 through PBCS.

The purpose of this study was to adapt the Statistics Anxiety Rating Scale (STARS) for a Greek student population. The STARS was administered to 890 Tertiary Education students in two Greek universities. It was performed a cross-validation study to examine the factorial structure and the psychometric properties with a series of confirmatory factor analyses. Results revealed a correlated six first-order factor model which provided the best fit to the data compared to a six-factor model with one superordinate factor. All six factors of the Greek version of the STARS presented convergent and discriminant validity and were internally consistent. Implications and limitations are discussed.

The main aim of the study is a comprehensive assessment of psychometric properties of the Polish version of Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ) in sport. Apart from standard psychometric evaluation, the paper presents an analysis of item reliability through the use of Item Response Theory, as well as the analysis of relationships between sport type, level of participation, gender and goal orientation level. The study covered 412 people aged M = 23.46 (SD = 5.40). The Perception of Success Questionnaire (POSQ), the Task and Ego Orientation in Sport Questionnaire (TEOSQ) and the Sport Motivation Scale (SMS-28) were used. High reliability of POSQ ego subscale (α = 0.89, ω = 0.89) and POSQ task subscale (α = 0.90, ω = 0.91) were noted. The test-retest correlations at the two-week interval were ICC = 0.91 for ego subscale, and ICC = 0.71 for task subscale, respectively. Confirmatory factor analysis showed a relatively good fit of the two-factor model to the data (CFI = 0.94). Relationships between the goal orientation measured by the POSQ questionnaire and motivational traits measured by TEOSQ and SMS-28 were obtained. It was also shown that high-performance athletes had higher scores on the ego factor than recreational athletes. Moreover, men had higher scores on the ego factor than women. The Perception of Success Questionnaire (Polish version) is characterized by satisfactory psychometric properties and can be used for scientific research and diagnosis.

This study investigated the psychometric properties of a self-rating scale designed to test the executive functions of the frontal lobes. A set of 16 items was selected, based on face validity, from the 200-item Coolidge Axis II Inventory. Cronbach scale reliability for the new scale was .72 on 1,223 purportedly normal participants. A factor analysis yielded a three-factor structure, Decision-making difficulties (8 items, 23% of the variance, scale reliability .77), Poor planning (4 items, 15% of the variance, scale reliability .63), and Task incompletion (6 items, 9% of the variance, scale reliability .66). A multivariate analysis of variance, performed on the over-all scale sum and the three subscales, between 17 closed head-injured patients and a matched control group was significant. The head-injured patients scored significantly higher on the over-all measure of executive dysfunction and higher on the decision-making difficulties subscale but not on the other two subscales.

The purpose of this study was to adapt the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale–Second Edition (RCMAS-2) into Mandarin and to examine its psychometric properties among Chinese adolescents. The participants included 436 Chinese students in Grades 7 to 12 who were administered the Chinese version of the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS-2-C). Confirmatory factor analyses (CFAs) were performed to examine the factor structure of the RCMAS-2-C. Results indicated a modified four-factor model (Worry and Social Anxiety factors combined, Physiological Anxiety, Defensiveness I, and Defensiveness II factors) provided an adequate model fit to the data. Categorical omegas were computed and ranged from .68 to .90 for the RCMAS-2 scale scores. Convergent evidence of validity for the RCMAS-2-C anxiety scores was also found. Implications of the findings of the study for clinicians and researchers are discussed.
