Health professionals’ social media usage behaviour: A study of the perceived barriers (Preprint)

BACKGROUND : Despite the growing popularity of social media internationally, a scan of the extant literature reveals that social media usage preference among health professionals are relatively lower than health consumers. While cynicism amongst health professionals could be the major reason, it is still unknown as to whether there are other factors affecting health professionals’ reluctance to use social media for health communication. OBJECTIVE This research investigates if health professionals perceive any possible barriers that may stand in the way of their social media usage behaviour by testing a new theoretical model drawn from the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM). METHODS The population for this study comprises Australian health professionals using social media, and working in hospitals, clinics and other clinical facilities. Based on a random sampling technique a cross-sectional survey was administered to 824 health professionals. The database used in this research comprised 219 responses yielding a response rate of 27 percent which is deemed acceptable given the nature of the topic being investigated. Data are analysed using the structural equation model (SEM) technique. RESULTS Findings indicated that Facebook is the most popular social media platform which is used by 46.5% of health professionals. YouTube is the second most popular platform used by health professionals (44.7%), followed by 25.1% of health professionals utilising Twitter, and 21.4% of health professionals who used LinkedIn. On average, only 8.8% of health professionals regularly access physician-only networks, and only 7.7% of health professionals used online blogs. In terms of perceived social media barriers, the SEM model demonstrated very good model fit (χ2 = 602.643; df, 233, χ2/df = 2.586, IFI = .91, TLI = .89, and CFI = .91) and indicates that information quality (P = .003), perceived trust (P = .008), professional boundary (P < .001), and supporting conditions ( P = .02) are key antecedents of perceived barriers of social media usage in the healthcare sector. CONCLUSIONS The findings of this study have important implications for healthcare providers and policy-makers regarding health professionals’ perceptions of the potential challenges of using social media in healthcare. The barriers emerging from this study call for an effective social media usage policy to provide health professionals and patients with a guideline for maximising the potential benefits with more emphasis on the appropriate strategies designed to overcome the problems. Findings further suggest that healthcare professionals need to be educated, informed and engaged in facing the challenges posed by such barriers. Finally, these insights could be useful in developing social media guidelines and strategies so that the healthcare benefits for the community in general and health service clients in particular are maximised.

This research investigated potential barriers that affected healthcare professionals’ behavioural intention to use social media. A cross-sectional survey was randomly administered to 824 healthcare professionals working in Australian healthcare organisations. At the end of data collection, 219 usable responses were collected. Analysis of data via structural equation model (SEM) found that perceived trust, privacy threats, professional boundary, facilitating conditions and self-efficacy significantly influence the notion of perceived usefulness and ease of use. In addition, information quality directly influences health professionals’ perceived ease of utilising social media technology. The result also indicated that gender moderates the relationship between barrier-related factors and perceived usefulness and ease of use. This study’s findings have important implications for healthcare providers and policymakers regarding medical professionals’ perceptions of the potential challenges in using social media as well as developing strategies to counter misinformation against the backdrop of COVID-19.

This research identifies the underlying drivers impacting on healthcare professionals’ social media usage behaviours using the technology acceptance model (TAM) as the theoretical lens. A self-administered survey questionnaire was developed and administered to 219 healthcare professionals. Data are analysed applying the structural equation modelling (SEM) technique. The SEM model demonstrated an acceptable model fit (χ2 = 534.241; df, 239, χ2/df = 2.235, RMSEA = 0.06, IFI = 0.92, TLI = 0.93, and CFI = 0.92) and indicates content quality, perceived risk, perceived credibility, peer influence, confirmation of expectations, supporting conditions, and perceived cost significantly influence the notion of perceived social media usefulness. Furthermore, perceived social media usefulness positively affects social media usage behaviour of healthcare professionals. This research generates important insights into what drives the adoption of social media by healthcare professionals. These insights could help develop social media guidelines and strategies to improve the state of professional interactions between health professionals and their clients.

The current pandemic has modified how education, learning, and technology interact with one another inside universities. The usage of technology for instructional purposes raises the question of whether learning that happens in an online environment is as effective as traditional classroom models. Within this context, this study explores the psychological well-being of students during the COVID-19 pandemic, using an online cross-sectional survey. Data were collected from 246 university students currently studying at a private university in India. Hierarchical regression analysis and structural equation modelling were used to study the mediating effects between communication apprehension, perceived learning, and psychological well-being under the moderating effects of intention to use social media and psychological stress. Results show that higher intentions to use social media alleviated the negative effects of communication apprehension on perceived learning. Interestingly, it was also found that perceived learning had a significant positive relationship with psychological well-being when students experienced higher levels of psychological stress (eustress). Based on the technology acceptance model (TAM) and the transactional theory of stress and coping, we attempt to integrate the findings related to these theories, which can be considered distinct to previous studies. Implications, limitations, and future directions for research and practice have also been discussed.

This research identifies the underlying drivers impacting on health consumers’ social media usage and acceptance behaviours using technology acceptance model (TAM) as the theoretical lens. A cross-sectional survey of 265 health consumers was conducted through a mall intercept technique. Participants in the survey were over the age of 18 and had access to a public or private healthcare service provider. The data were analysed using structural equation modelling (SEM). The major findings show that perceived ease of use, privacy threat, information quality, social influence and self-efficacy influence health consumers’ social media adoption behaviours. Perceived usefulness was not found to affect health consumers’ social media adoption behaviours. The moderation analysis showed that influences of privacy threats are non-significant for mature age respondents and non-frequent users of social media. This study’s findings have important implications for designing social media strategies for the healthcare industry. The drivers that positively impact on health consumers’ social media usages can be integrated into meaningful strategies to capture the attention of potential consumers. They need to be educated, informed and engaged as health consumers so that they employ social media effectively to their advantage.

This study aims to determine how the influence of the Electronic Word of Mouth (eWOM) on social media YouTube on Purchase Intention on Samsung smartphones in Bandung with the presence of a mediator from Brand Attitude. The research method used is a quantitative method with descriptive research objectives, the type of research is causal, the technique used in this study is non-probability sampling, data collection methods with cross sectional. In this study, the population used in this study were smartphone users in Bandung. The population in this study were smartphone users in Bandung who used social media Youtube. The sampling technique used the Cochran formula so that a minimum sample size of 385 respondents was determined and in the study the valid respondents were 400 respondents. The data analysis technique is a multivariate technique using the Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) method. For data analysis using the AMOS 24 application. The findings of this study indicate that there is no effect of eWOM Samsung smartphones on Purchase Intention and the influence of eWOM on the Brand Attitude of Samsung brand smartphones on Youtube social media

Background: In the last few decades, information and communication technology in social media has brought tremendous changes in the whole business, educational and political system; Dentistry is not an exception. The rise of social media has transformed how health professionals interact with their patients and deliver different types of health care services. Aim: To assess the attitudes and practices related to social media usage among dental practitioners in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad city. Methods: A self-designed questionnaire survey was conducted among all dental practitioners in Sangli-Miraj-Kupwad city, Maharashtra, India. The questionnaire consisted of first part with socio-demographic variables like age, gender, years of experience and area of expertise and second part to assess attitudes and practices towards social media usage. Results: Among total of 138 dental practitioners, majority (68.1%) were belonging to age of 36-44 years followed by those above 45 years of age (17.4%). Around 49.3% dental practitioners were practicing dentistry since less than 5 years. Gender wise comparison showed no significant difference between attitudes and practices for social media usage. Although significant difference was found for question 3, 6 and 11 for P < 0.05. Conclusion: There has been wide adoption of social media among dental practitioners and shows no significant difference with different genders for both attitudes and practices.


Organizational commitment among employees is important to determine organizational effectiveness as employees with higher organizational commitment have higher motivation to stay with their organization. In recent years, previous studies have shown that the teachers’ organizational commitment are low and moderate. Therefore, this study focuses on the effect of work passion toward organizational commitment with work intention as the mediator. The objectives of this study was to determine the effect of work passion on work intention and organizational commitment among teachers and to determine the role of work intention as a mediator in the effect of work passion on organizational commitment among teachers. This study employed a cross-sectional survey involving 355 school teachers in Malaysia through multi-stage cluster sampling technique. Data were analyzed using descriptive analysis, while confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) and structural equation modeling (SEM) were used to determine the fitness of the model with the data. Findings showed that organizational commitment and work passion among school teachers were moderate, while work intention was at a higher level. SEM analysis showed that the model has a good fit with CMIN/df= 3.22, GFI = 0.95, CFI=0.97, TLI=0.95, RMSEA=0.08. In addition, job factors have a significant direct effect on work intention and organizational commitment. Results also showed that work intention mediated the relationship between work passion and organizational commitment. The results of this imply the importance of work passion and work intention in enhancing organizational commitment among teachers in Malaysia.

Purpose This study aims to test the impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic on large firms, with regard to a supply disruption, productivity, customer satisfaction and firm performance. Design/methodology/approach A cross-sectional survey design and stratified sampling technique were implemented for employee selection and data gathering. Confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to examine the data and model fitness, while the structural equation model was used for hypotheses testing. Findings The pandemic triggered supply disruptions, but did not significantly impact the productivity of manufacturing firms directly. However, supply disruption positively and significantly impacted productivity. Organisational productivity had no significant impact on customer satisfaction, however, when mediating the relationship between Covid-19 and customer satisfaction, it produces a positive indirect effect. Finally, Covid-19 and supply disruption when mediated by organisational productivity both had negative significant relationships on performance. Research limitations/implications Having a unique model, it creates a trail for future researchers to explore further. Though customer satisfaction was expected to be affected by the pandemic, it is interesting to find out that customer satisfaction when mediated by organisational productivity was positively influenced. Practical implications Disruptions are inevitable, managers must balance the pursuit of customer satisfaction and productivity so that one does not erode the other. Emphasis must be channelled towards managing the productivity of the firm to maintain customer satisfaction during these uncertain times. Deliberate steps like manufacturing flexibility investments should be initiated. Originality/value The first study to examine Covid-19, supply disruption, customer satisfaction, organisational productivity and performance in the Nigerian manufacturing sector.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of design of e-servicescapes on student engagement in distance education (DE), and examine whether this impact is mediated by student experience quality. Design/methodology/approach Quantitative research approach based on cross-sectional survey design was adapted where data were collected using a structured questionnaire. Sample consisted of 252 undergraduates registered in the DE platform in Sri Lanka and was drawn using a simple random sampling technique. Collected data were analysed using the structural equation modelling. Findings Data analysis revealed that there is a direct significant impact of e-servicescapes on student engagement while this impact is partially mediated by student experience quality in the Sri Lankan context. Meantime, the social presence feature of e-servicescapes has the highest impact on student engagement. Practical implications Findings of the study provide an empirically validated model to boost up the student engagement and significantly contribute to the designing of the e-servicescapes of the DE institutes in order to offer a superior service to a wide array of stakeholders. Originality/value Even though e-servicescapes have been recognised as a driver of customer behaviour, the concept is fairly unexplored in the educational context. Due to its practical applicability in the DE context, this study contributes to the existing knowledge by presenting a novel conceptual model developed based on multiple theories to identify its impact on student behaviour.
