Recently, process control in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) is, mostly accomplished through examining the quality of the water effluent and adjusting the processes through the operator’s experience. This practice is inefficient, costly and slow in control response. A better control of WTPs can be achieved by developing a robust mathematical tool for performance prediction. Due to their high accuracy and quite promising application in the field of engineering, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) are attracting attention in the domain of WWTP predictive performance modeling. This work focuses on applying ANN with a feed-forward, back propagation learning paradigm to predict the effluent water quality of the Habesha brewery WTP. Data of influent and effluent water quality covering approximately an 11-month period (May 2016 to March 2017) were used to develop, calibrate and validate the models. The study proves that ANN can predict the effluent water quality parameters with a correlation coefficient (R) between the observed and predicted output values reaching up to 0.969. Model architecture of 3-21-3 for pH and TN, and 1-76-1 for COD were selected as optimum topologies for predicting the Habesha Brewery WTP performance. The linear correlation between predicted and target outputs for the optimal model architectures described above were 0.9201 and 0.9692, respectively.

Metropolitan Istanbul Wastewater Treatment System contains 14 marine outfalls, seven of which include secondary stage biological treatment processes. The others have only mechanical treatment units including bar screens and grit chambers. Only one mechanical pre-treatment and marine disposal system, Yenikapi plant, has been operated since 1988 among these 14 plants and six of them are ready for construction. In this paper, the environmental impact of Yenikapi pretreatment and marine disposal system on the water quality of the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara has been investigated. Long term water quality measurements which were performed in pre-and post-dischange applications have been evaluated. Water quality parameters including pH, DO, BODs, TKN, P and total coliforms were measured at various sampling stations around the discharge points. A general evaluation of marine outfall systems to be constructed in the scope of Istanbul wastewater treatment project, on the water quality of the Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus has been presented.

A general methodology for the study of water quality in rivers is presented. The paper consists of four parts. In the first part the general characteristics of the area of study, which is the Beli Lom river, and its major pollution sources are presented. The effluent of the Razgrad Wastewater Treatment Plant (RWWTP) has been identified as the most significant pollution point source, due to the inadequate performance of the plant. The second part deals with data collection and processing. Four series of data have been collected, including physical, flow and water quality characteristics. In the third part a 1-d, finite-difference, second-order model is presented. In the fourth part, the model is calibrated, for the determination of its main coefficients, and is successfully verified by predicting the BOD and DO concentrations in the Beli Lom river for all series of data. Finally, the model has been applied to determine the maximum BOD and minimum DO effluent concentrations of the RWWTP, so that a minimum DO concentration is maintained throughout the river.

Abstract22 representative antibiotics, including 8 quinolones (QNs), 9 sulfonamides (SAs), and 5 macrolides (MCs) were selected to investigate their occurrence and removal efficiencies in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and their distribution in the receiving water of the Chaobai River in Beijing, China. Water quality monitoring was performed in an integrated way at different selected points in the WWTP to explore the potential mechanism of antibiotics removal during wastewater treatment. Water quality of the Chaobai River was also analyzed to examine environmental distribution in a river ecosystem. The results showed that within all the 22 compounds examined, 10 antibiotics were quantified in wastewater influent, 10 in effluent, and 7 in river. Sulfadiazine (SDZ, 396 ng/L) and Sulfamethazine (SMZ, 382 ng/L) were the dominating antibiotics in the influent. Both the conventional treatment and advanced Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) system was important for the removal of antibiotics from the wastewater. And the concentrations of selected antibiotics were ranged from 0-41.8 ng/L in the effluent-receiving river. Despite the fact that the concentrations were reduced more than 50% compared to effluent concentrations, WWTP discharge was still regarded as a dominant point-source input of antibiotics into the Chaobai River.

Characterization of Environmentally friendly materials used as wastewater treatment material has been studied in order to compare the quality of wastewater in Chiang Mai, Thailand on two types of treatment materials, which are cow bone char (CBC) made from Thai cow bone char cleaned and calcined at 850๐C and the a mineral called “zeolite” (ZLT) bought from Kamthiang market, Chiang Mai. The physical characteristics of both types of materials indicate that the CBC has a higher density than the ZLT but has lower pore volume than the ZLT. The effect of density on the water quality improvement was showed that CBC was a suitable type of wastewater treatment material because their high density can fix them in the batch system.

Water pollution in the big cities in Indonesia, especially in DKI Jakarta has shown serious problems. One of the potential sources of water pollution is domestic wastewater that is wastewater from kitchens, laundry, bathing and toilets. These problems have become more serious since the spreads of sewerage systems are still low, so that domestic, institutional and commercial wastewater causes severe water pollution in many rivers or shallow ground water. Based on the fact that the progress of development of sewerage system is still low, it is important to develop low cost technology for individual house hold or semi communal wastewater treatment such as using anaerobic and aerobic submerged biofilter. This paper describes the pilot plan study of individual household wastewater treatment using anaerobic and aerobic submerged biofilter using plastic fiber media. The raw wastewater in this experiment was from household wastewater. Results of experiment shows that under operating condition 12-24 hours hydraulic retention time, the treated water was physically very clear, and according on chemical analysis the removal efficiency of BOD is 73.24 – 94.92 %, COD 65.80 – 90.76 %, total suspended solids (TSS) 95.60 – 97.69 %, and detergent (MBAS) 56.80 – 88.51 %, respectively. Compared to attempt by using charcoal media, the quality of treated water did not show  difference significantly.  Kata Kunci  : Limbah domestik non toilet, biofilter anaerob-aerob, media serat palstik.

Title (Bahasa Indonesia): Viabilitas rotifer Brachionus rotundiformis strain tumpaan pada salinitas berbeda The purpose of the research was to analyze the viability of eggs of Tumpaan-strained rotifer, Brachionus rotundiformis, at different salinities (10 and 20 ppt). Rotifer collection was done in the area of reclamation plan and household wastewater disposal located in the coastal village of Tumpaan 1, South Minahasa Regency. At the time of sample collection, water quality parameters of the sampling site were also measured. After multiplication through clone culture in the salinity of 10 ppt and 20 ppt, the viability of the rotifer was then tested by daily observing the number of live rotifers, the number of eggs carried and the number of youngsters produced. The data were then calculated using the life table method. Results showed that water quality of the rotifer collection site is suitable for the rotifer to live. The rotifers held in 10 ppt salinity had higher survivorship and population growth (fertility rate and Ro) than those in 20 ppt salinity. This reflects that beside the quality of feed, rotifer growth is affected by salinity as well. Data kemudian dihitung menggunakan metode life table.
