PHYTOCONGRESS – 2016             The International Conference Phytocongress – 2016 on the theme “Indian Traditional Medicine - A Conglomeration of Ancient Knowledge and Modern Science” was organized by Centre for Advanced Research in Indian System of Medicine (CARISM), SASTRA University, Thanjavur on 21 & 22 July 2016. This conference was focused on the vast, enviable traditional wealth of India, practices and usage of plant drugs, metals, minerals and animals by traditional medical practitioners during ancient times and the current status of traditional and synthetic drugs. This programme analyzed the requirements of modern times and how the same could be benefited through ancient wisdom. Sessions in the seminar covered a wide range of topics emphasizing the scientific merits involved in Ayurveda and Siddha medicines. These sessions highlighted the significance and importance of evidence based studies on traditional medicines and finding new experimental methodologies for their characterization using various sophisticated analytical techniques and their applications.      The modern tools of chemistry and biology, in particular allow scientists to detail the exact nature of the biological effects of natural compounds on the human body, as well as to uncover possible synergies, which holds much promise for the discovery of new therapies against many devastating diseases. With the technology at hand today, we can validate the science behind this ancient knowledge and unravel the mysteries behind why and how traditional medicine works. The challenge today is to integrate the best of the different healing traditions to meet the healthcare needs of contemporary society.      This International conference brought together leading academic scientists, researchers and research scholars to exchange and share their experiences and wisdom on all aspects of medicinal plants and natural products. It also provided an interdisciplinary platform for researchers, practitioners and educators to present and discuss the most recent innovations, trends, and concerns as well as practical challenges encountered and solutions to be adopted in the fields of medicinal plants and natural products.     This conference was inaugurated by Prof. Bhushan Patvarthan, University of Pune, and this Conference was convened by Prof. P. Brindha, Associate Dean and Co-ordinator, CARISM, SATRA University. Invited international speakers from USA, Australia and Malaysia and national speakers gave scintillating lectures covering various aspects on the theme of the conference. Altogether nearly 200 Scientists, Siddha and Ayurveda Researchers, Practitioners and Industrialists participated from various parts of India.

Cancer is the second leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Although chemotherapy and radiotherapy enhance the survival rate of cancerous patients but they have several acute toxic effects. Therefore, there is a need to search for new anticancer agents having better efficacy and lesser side effects. In this regard, herbal treatment is found to be a safe method for treating and preventing cancer. Here, an attempt has been made to screen some less explored medicinal plants like Ammania baccifera, Asclepias curassavica, Azadarichta indica, Butea monosperma, Croton tiglium, Hedera nepalensis, Jatropha curcas, Momordica charantia, Moringa oleifera, Psidium guajava, etc. having potent anticancer activity with minimum cytotoxic value (IC50 >3μM) and lesser or negligible toxicity. They are rich in active phytochemicals with a wide range of drug targets. In this study, these medicinal plants were evaluated for dose-dependent cytotoxicological studies via in vitro MTT assay and in vivo tumor models along with some more plants which are reported to have IC50 value in the range of 0.019-0.528 mg/ml. The findings indicate that these plants inhibit tumor growth by their antiproliferative, pro-apoptotic, anti-metastatic and anti-angiogenic molecular targets. They are widely used because of their easy availability, affordable price and having no or sometimes minimal side effects. This review provides a baseline for the discovery of anticancer drugs from medicinal plants having minimum cytotoxic value with minimal side effects and establishment of their analogues for the welfare of mankind.

Viral pneumonia has been a serious threat to global health, especially now we have dramatic challenges such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately six million cases of community-acquired pneumonia occur every year, and over 20% of which need hospital admission. Influenza virus, respiratory virus, and coronavirus are the noteworthy causative agents to be investigated based on recent clinical research. Currently, anaphylactic reaction and inflammation induced by antiviral immunity can be incriminated as causative factors for clinicopathological symptoms of viral pneumonia. In this article, we illustrate the structure and related infection mechanisms of these viruses and the current status of antiviral therapies. Owing to a set of antiviral regiments with unsatisfactory clinical effects resulting from side effects, genetic mutation, and growing incidence of resistance, much attention has been paid on medicinal plants as a natural source of antiviral agents. Previous research mainly referred to herbal medicines and plant extracts with curative effects on viral infection models of influenza virus, respiratory virus, and coronavirus. This review summarizes the results of antiviral activities of various medicinal plants and their isolated substances, exclusively focusing on natural products for the treatment of the three types of pathogens that elicit pneumonia. Furthermore, we have introduced several useful screening tools to develop antiviral lead compounds.

Abstract Background Around 80% of human population in the world relies on herbal or phytomedicines for their primary health care needs. The treatment of many diseases and disorders with phytomedicines is considered and observed as very safe with no or minimal side effects. Many medicinal plants and their preparations are practised at home as remedies for treating and preventing various diseases and disorders. For example, medicinal plants and their crude parts such as tulsi, neem, turmeric and ginger are used to cure or treat several common ailments, out of which Curcuma zedoaria Rosc commonly known as white turmeric is one of the important crude drugs belonging to Zingiberaceae family and genus Curcuma. Traditionally, it has been reported to possess many biological activities been used for many therapeutic actions due to the presence of wide range of phytoconstituents in it. The main objectives of the present work are to carry out extensive review on its chemical, pharmacological and biological activities of plant. Main body In the present review article, extensive data on its chemical, pharmacological and biological activities have been collected from various online sources including indexing sites such as Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed and Research Gate and presented. Various articles published in indexed journals and other databases have been collected and reviewed systematically. Conclusion The present review investigation is very much helpful for researchers and readers to collectively have valuable information on chemistry, pharmacology and biological effects of Curcuma zedoaria Rosc. The present investigation concludes that the white turmeric is found to possess complex range of phytoconstituents such as curcumin, ethyl p-methoxycinnamate, β-turmerone, β-eudesmol, zingiberene, dihydrocurcumin, furanodiene, α-phellandrene, 1–8 cineole, β-elemense and germacrone. Due to the presence of wide range of phytoconstituents, plants have been reported for its diverse biological activities.

: Fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L.) native geographic range is the area from Iran to North part of India, but it is presently planted also in other regions of the world. Fenugreek has been used as a notable multipurpose medicinal and traditional herb in Iranian, Indian, and Chinese for several centuries. The most important composition of fenugreek seeds are protein, neural detergent fiber, gum, lipids, moisture, ash and starch. Fenugreek seeds and leaves are anticholesterolemic, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, carminative, demulcent, deobstruent, emollient, expectorant, galactogogue, febrifuge, laxative, hypoglycaemic, restorative, parasiticide and uterine tonic and useful in burning sensation. Traditionally, fenugreek seeds used around the world are in bone and muscles, respiratory system, gastrointestinal system, female reproductive system, cardio-vascular system, endocrinology and hepatic. The most outstanding modern health benefits of fenugreek are in appetite suppressant and weight loss, reduce cholesterol, reduce cardiovascular risk, control diabetes, a good consolation for sore throats, a remedy for acid reflux, constipation, colon cancer prevention, appropriate for kidney trouble, skin infection, increase milk production, reduce menstrual discomfort, and it reduces menopause symptoms. Both modern science and traditional medicine integration with novel technologies and discoveries will secure cultivation of medicinal herbs and promote sustainability in a long-term and a wide-range.

Abstract Neutron beams have been providing dispensable tools for wide range of fields in modern science and engineering. Recently, a new type of pulsed neutron source has been developed, known as Laser-Driven Neutron Source (LDNS). The LDNSs utilize the laser-accelerated ions, including protons and deuterons as a primary beam and generate neutrons from a secondary target (lithium, beryllium, etc.) via nuclear reaction. Applying an additional moderator part, LDNSs can provide a broad energy range of neutrons (meV∼MeV). This paper aims to introduce the current status of LDNS and the results of application-oriented experiments implemented at Institute of Laser Engineering (ILE) of Japan.

Introduction: Depression is a chronic and common disease and is currently used to treat antidepressants such as tricyclics, which sometimes lead to the activity of certain brain chemicals called neurotransmitters. The use of chemical and industrial drugs by their patients can be due to the lack of treatment for depression. Therefore, in order to promote health, the use of natural products and herbs, and clinical trials and studies with traditional medicine approaches to the treatment of depression is important. In the past, natural products have also been used. The Qurchr('39')an and Islam, while analyzing the causes and phenomena of depression, have addressed the ways of its treatment. In particular, this study has been conducted in line with the on the revival of traditional Iranian and Islamic medicine, and it seems necessary. Material and Methods: In this paper, materials based on electronic library resources, including scientific articles and relevant books from foreign and domestic authoritative journals and websites, have been conducted with proper keyword searches. The medicinal herbs used in depression in traditional medicine and modern medicine, the teachings of the Islamic religion, the reports presented in this regard in English and Persian, and the experiences of the several years of research on various indigenous herbs seeking research You know, it was a benchmark for study and was studied after collection. Results: In traditional medicine, for the treatment of many diseases, such as depression and anxiety, some herbs such as Citrus aurantium L. and Ocimum basilicum have been known and used for many years. Studies on Echium amoenum L. and Feijoa sellowiana have also been carried out today. It is also used to treat acupuncture. In traditional medicine, and of course, Islam and the Quran, depression has been discussed and appropriate solutions have been presented. So that natural products derived from medicinal plants are known and recommended. Meanwhile, in Islam and the Qurchr('39')an, healthy, halal and herbal remedies have also been addressed. In ancient Traditional Iranian medicine, it has been given great importance to the theme of sport, heroism and its moral outcomes. Also, Islamic scholars believed in the benefits of spiritual education and its role in physical strengthening. Relaxing exercises also significantly reduced depression. Conclusion: Given that patients with depression may be susceptible to suicide due to frustration. The use of medicinal herbs and traditional medicine and Iranian medicine, in view of their desirable, natural and safe effects, is necessary. According to Islamic texts, practical commitment to Islamic beliefs can be a deterrent to many psychological disorders. Reading the Qurchr('39')an, believing in God, practicing the teachings of the Qurchr('39')an and prayer, and other divine duties are also effective in creating calm and promoting the health and treatment of diseases such as depression.

Since the time of our ancestors, natural products issued from plant play a therapeutic crucial role. About 25-30% of all medicines (drugs) available for the treatment of diseases are derived from natural products (from plants, animals, bacteria and fungi) or are derivatives of natural products. The aim of this research was to scientifically identify and supply tangible documentation on these two plants employed in the traditional medicine. From November 2020 to February 2021, an ethnobotanical survey was conducted within four markets at the south of Benin, employing a semistructured questionnaire. Two hundred respondents including 80% of females and 20% of males were interviewed. The 2 studied plants are mainly used for different types of sickness related to infections. Females’ herbalists are the most represented. From this research, it appears that the 2 plants are widely used for the treatment of severe infections. On the market, 95% of the leafy steam are sold against 5% of the roots for both plants. The main preparation way is decoction. Oral use is reported to be common in all region. The value of samples sold varies from 200F CFA (Financial Cooperation of Africa) to 1000F CFA. The decoctions are usually obtained through one of a mix of different types of plants. Traditional knowledge is transmitted from one generation to another by oral education. Till today there was no record found. During our study, we did no record prohibition or side effect related to these plants’ use. These medicinal plants occupy a crucial place within the therapeutic arsenal of west Africa. Our results constitute a vital tool to determine the true potentials of these plants. These results could lead to new improved traditional medicine.

To combat a variety of liver ailments medicinal plants may serve as a vital source because of presence of pharmacologically active phytoconstituents. It is very interesting to note that there is no drug available in the modem system of medicine for treating hepatic disorders; only certain herbal preparations are available to treat this quite vulnerable disease. A large number of plants with hepatoprotective activity are present but only handful of herbs have such scientific support. Herbal medicines have been used to alleviate liver disorders for many centuries and have currently become a favorable therapy for pathological liver disease.
