The aim of this research was to examine if there are some differences in a way optimists and pessimists react to unpleasant movie stimuli. The sample was convenient and it consisted of 42 (F=90%) students of psychology, from the Faculty of philosophy in Nish. Age range in the sample was from 18 to 20 (M=19, SD=.541). Instruments used in this research were: Life orientation test (LOT-R: Scheier, Carver, & Bridges, 1994) and Brief Mood Introspection Scale (BMIS: Mayer, & Gaschke, 2013) in order to operationalize the mood of the respondents. The stimulus was a scene from the movie Sophie’s Choice, which aimed at inducing a negative affect. From the results we can conclude that the mood of the optimists, after watching movie stimuli, is corrputed, while the mood of the pesimists isn't.So, in the further studies which examine emotion induction through movies, we suggest the  inclusion of optimism-pesimism as a control variable.Also, for further studies we suggest the involvement of actors and testing how they react to film stimuli.

Disasters like flood can result in creating phobia, depression, anxiety etc. in victims, the psychological distress may also affect their optimism, stress tolerance, resilience etc. and thereby their overall psychological wellbeing. Optimism enables an individual to set goals, make commitments, tolerate with adversity and pain and recover from trauma and stress (Schneider &Leitenberg, 1989).Stress tolerance refers to a person's ability to withstand stress without becoming seriously impaired (Carson, Butcher &Mineka, 1996). Objectives of the study: to find out whether there is any difference among flood victims on the basis of age on optimism and stress tolerance, whether there is any gender difference on optimism and stress tolerance among three groups (primary, secondary and both) of flood victims, whether there is any difference between the three groups of victims on optimism and stress tolerance, and also to explore the relationship between optimism and stress tolerance among flood victims. Method: (a).participants- the study was conducted on 115 flood victims, from Ernakulam district in Kerala; in the age range 18-50 years. (b).materials-Life Orientation Test – Revised (Scheier&Carver ,1994), Stress Tolerance Scale (Reshmy&Sanandaraj,1999). Results and conclusion: the results reveal that there is any difference among flood victims on the basis of age on optimism, gender difference among primary victims on optimism among primary victims who engaged in volunteering and/recue activities on stress tolerance and a significant positive correlation between optimism and stress tolerance among flood victims. It is implied that inculcating optimistic view at home and at school, providing optimism based training sessions at school from very early years of age can result in generations that will be able to tolerate stressful events in life, whether it is personal issues, manmade or natural disasters.

Significantly higher mean scores on the negatively versus positively worded subscales are reported for a Dutch-adapted version of the Life Orientation Test, a measure of dispositional optimism. This extends previous findings on measures of negative affect (i.e., anxiety and depression) to a similarly balanced measure of positive affect. Factor analysis identified two factors (presence of optimism and absence of pessimism) which suggested the multidimensionality of the scale based on differences in item content along the independent dimensions of positive and negative affect.

General psychosocial measures are assumed to be stable over time. However, such measures may be affected by the situation preceding assessment. In this study 28 participants completed the WHO-5 Well-Being Index, the Subjective Happiness Scale, and the Life Orientation Test which are general measures, and the Positive Affect Negative Affect Schedule and the Feeling Scale which are state measures. Subsequently, the first part of ‘Mega Disasters Nagasaki The Forgotten Bomb’ documentary was presented to the participants. Following the intervention, they completed the same measures again. State measures of negative affect increased, feeling state decreased as expected, but retrospectively measured well-being as well as the index of optimism also decreased. There were large individual differences. The findings indicate that general measures, assumed to be stable over time, are influenced by the situation. Therefore, there is a need for reporting, as well as controlling, the events preceding their measurement. The implication of these findings is that hundreds of empirical results based on general or trait measures may be invalid if any event preceding their assessment had an emotional impact.

Zusammenfassung. Ziel der vorliegenden Studie ist die Untersuchung der psychometrischen Eigenschaften, faktoriellen Struktur und konvergenten Validität der deutschsprachigen Version des Parent Rated Life Orientation Test of Children (PLOT) zur Messung von Optimismus und Pessimismus bei 4 bis 6-jährigen Vorschulkindern. Eltern von 145 Kindergartenkindern (77 Mädchen; Alter: M = 5.0, SD = 0.6 Jahre) schätzten Optimismus und Pessimismus sowie Emotionsregulation der Kinder ein. Außerdem wurde das Problemverhalten der Kinder (Eltern- und Erzieherinneneinschätzung) erfasst. Konsistent zu Studien mit Schulkindern und Jugendlichen zeigte sich eine zweidimensionale Faktorenstruktur mit einem Optimismus- und einem Pessimismusfaktor. Die Ergebnisse ergaben theoriekonforme Zusammenhänge mit Problemverhalten und Emotionsregulation der Kinder. Insgesamt weisen die gefundenen Reliabilitäts- und Validitätswerte auf eine gute Verwendbarkeit des PLOT bei Vorschulkindern hin. Das neue Messverfahren kann einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis von Zukunftserwartungen bei Vorschulkindern leisten und als Screening-Instrument zur Identifikation von Kindern mit einem Entwicklungsrisiko dienen.

El presente estudio tuvo por objetivo determinar la relación existente entre autoconepto personal, nivel de ansiedad y comprensión lectora en estudiantes de educación secundaria. El diseño que se reporta es descriptivo correlacional. La muestra estuvo constituida por 260 estudiantes varones y mujeres del VII ciclo de educación secundaria del colegio N°0025, del distrito de Ate, de la Urbanización San Gregorio, a quienes se les aplicaron los siguientes instrumentos: el cuestionario de autoconcepto personal (APE) de Eider Goñi Palacios (2009); la escala de ansiedad, el LOT, y el LOT-R; Life Orientation Test, de Sheier, Carver y Bridges (1994); y la prueba de comprensión lectora de Cabanillas (2004). A partir del análisis de los resultados, se concluye que existe una relación significativa entre autoconcepto personal, nivel de ansiedad y comprensión lectora en estudiantes de educación secundaria.

The framing effect is a key topic that has been insufficiently studied in research on behavioral decision making. In our study we explored the effects of optimism on self-framing and risky decision making. Participants were 416 undergraduates who responded to the Life Orientation Test and a self-framing test based on the Asian disease problem. The results demonstrate that, compared with people low in optimism, highly optimistic individuals tended to use more positive words to describe problems, generate more positive frames, and choose more risky options. There was also a significant self-framing effect: Participants with a negative frame tended to be risk-seeking, whereas those with a positive frame tended to avoid risks. Additionally, selfframing suppressed the effect of optimism on risky decision making. We can conclude that optimism has significant effects on self-framing and risky decision making.

Optimism is an attitude of a healthy mind that leads to success while pessimism is ingrained habit of mind with the consequences of underachievement and anxiety. University students who practice optimismare considered highly significant with the score of Life Orientation Test-Revised.
