In the past, the foundations for building the environment were the characteristics of an average person. Those who did not fit in the average were practically unable to participate on an equal footing in the life of the community. The concept of universal design involves providing opportunities to satisfy the requirements of all users, among others, of persons with disabilities, young children and elderly persons, to participate in various areas of society. The architecture creates and shapes the environment in which human beings can live. The aim of this research was to examine the awareness of architecture students as future professionals about the existing application of the concept of universal design in the built environment by investigating the influence of prior learning, the cycle of academic studies and being in contact with people with disabilities. The study sample consisted of 129 students of the Faculty of Architecture, University of Belgrade (60 first-year students of undergraduate studies and 69 first-year students of master academic studies). For this purpose, a special questionnaire was designed containing 10 questions about the students’ awareness of the application of universal design in the built environment. The results showed that the cycle of academic studies affected the greater awareness of architecture students, whereas the type of secondary education and acquaintance with people with disabilities did not have a significant impact.

This research aims to investigate the perception of university students about people with disabilities. Fifty-six first-year students of the occupational therapy degree participated in the study, during the 2017-2018 academic year. The effect caused by the use of different strategies with the aim of achieving a positive perception of persons with disabilities is collected, after several information, training, contact and reflection sessions. The results suggest that first-year students appreciate having contact with people with whom they will be able to apply their knowledge as professionals. They are surprised by the autonomy, optimism, perseverance and participation of people with disabilities. It has served them mainly to understand the profession, to value the therapeutic relationship and to see support products. The most chosen weakness to change, after carrying out the designed activities is patience. Disability is still a distant and unknown world for first year students, however, it is crucial to achieve a positive perception through strategies throughout the career, since in the near future they will work with these people from the occupation in contributing to their health, welfare and participation in life.

People with disabilities have physical limitations and mental disorders. According to Law No. 8 of 2016 concerning persons with disabilities, people with disabilities are those who experience physical, intellectual, mental and sensory limitations for a long time in interacting with the environments who may experience obstacles and difficulties in participating fully and effectively with other citizens based on equal rights. In relates to that, women with disabilities still experience some social discrimination such as social exclusion, marginalization, stereotypes and violence which may results poverty, unemployment, and life deprivation experienced by women with disabilities as heads of households. With the discrimination they experienced, women with disabilities as human beings always tries to carry out survival strategies to meet their life and family needs. Economic problems experienced by women with disabilities makes them have to carry out a survival strategy. As an analytical tool in this study, researchers used the Subsistence Ethics Theory by Scott (1989). In the Ethical Theory of Subsistence, there are three ways of survival mechanisms, among others are to tighten spending, to have a side job, and to get help from networks outside the family. Using descriptive qualitative research, data was collected through observation, interview and documentation techniques. The data was then analyzed through the process of data reduction, data presentation and verification. The data validation uses source triangulation techniques, technical triangulation and time triangulation. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that most of the research subjects used survival mechanisms by tightening expenditures in order to increase daily expenses. In addition, they have side jobs as farm laborers, odd jobs, and also tailors; as well as utilize the local government aid to meet their daily needs.

Concerned about the success rate of new students in our program we designed and implemented a compulsory set of experiences which aim to support students in their transition from high school to university by 1) developing their sense of belonging to a community of learners and by 2) articulating with them the interrelationships among their first year core courses. We initiated various strategies which we have refined in response to student feedback over the past three years. In this paper we describe the pedagogical moves that constitute our initiative and the lessons we learned. We explore essential academic and personal issues that first-year students in all programs face. We share our research findings and address the big ideas that could be applied to any discipline or multi-disciplinary program. Préoccupés par les taux de rétention des étudiants de première année, les auteurs ont conçu et mis en oeuvre un ensemble d’expériences obligatoires dont le but est d’aider les étudiants à effectuer la transition entre l’école secondaire et l’université. Ils ont établi deux objectifs : (a) développer chez les étudiants le sens d’appartenance à une communauté d’apprenants et (b) démontrer les corrélations qui existent entre les cours de base de première année que les étudiants suivent. Diverses stratégies ont été entreprises et plus tard améliorées, à partir des rétroactions fournies par les étudiants au cours de l’étude de deux ans. Cet article présente une explication des actions pédagogiques de cette initiative et explore les questions essentielles académiques et personnelles auxquelles sont confrontés les étudiants de première année dans tous les programmes. Les résultats de cette étude sont résumés et les idées générales qui peuvent s’appliquer à n’importe quelle discipline ou à des programmes multidisciplinaires sont présentées en détail.

Nataliе’s Ramonda, a symbol of Armistice Day – November 11 in Serbia, is a new memorial symbol constructed and promoted by politicians in 2012. The Armistice Day was celebrated then as a national holiday in Serbia. The reception of this symbol has been explored over a five-year period, both in a public discourse and on a representative sample of first year students at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade. In public discourse, as well as among students of the Faculty of Philosophy, Natalie’s Ramonda is perceived as an emblem, a badge, and most often as a symbol. It was seen as an emblem on the lapel of public and media figures, inaccessible to broad commercial promotion and sales. In public discourse and among students at the Faculty of Philosophy, Natalie’s Ramonda was perceived in several answers as a medal, and is also recognized as a flower that symbolizes the suffering of the Serbian people in World War One; symbol of the nation’s rebirth – the flower phoenix, as a mark of peace and freedom. As a newly constructed symbol of the Armistice Day in Serbia, for the past seven years, Natalie’s Ramonda has been a mediator in the public culture of remembrance and in the ongoing process, by becoming a part of cultural memory.

This chapter examines the emergence of the global artistic-entrepreneurial university, the increasing importance of interdisciplinary and innovative pedagogies, and how these new emphases are shaping institutional change. The first section analyzes the global university as an “assemblage,” a process that gathers ideas, materialities, digitized platforms, and human beings into a new form of higher education. Because of the impacts on higher education of the flows of capital, technology, people, and cultural practices in both the “East” and the “West,” this form of the university transcends regional and national boundaries as it builds networks of learning around the world. The second section of the chapter focuses on the increasing importance of interdisciplinarity and developing active and integrative pedagogies organized around fundamental skills and questions. In order to ground the discussion in particular sites, the authors use examples from the University of Hong Kong’s new Core Curriculum and from the University of Washington Bothell’s Discovery Core for first-year students. In the final section, the chapter addresses what the next steps might look like as institutions change themselves to fit a globalized context. This section returns to the idea of the global university as a “hub of an ecology of studio-labs” (Parks, 2005, p. 57) and suggest that the “managerial” university is transitioning into a more flexible model of the “artistic-entrepreneurial” university in order to prosper in an extremely competitive and generative global environment.

For the past few years, we have been experimenting with an e-learning approach to our introductory laboratory classes for first year students. Our overall objective was to maximise students’ useful time in the laboratory. We considered that time spent with students gathered around a desk watching a demonstration is not an efficient use of staff or students’ time.It is well recognised that students’ performance in the laboratory can be enhanced if they are familiar with the background of the experiments which will be conducted, hence the use of ‘pre-labs’. We have been delivering our ‘pre-labs’ electronically by requiring students to work through a package before coming to the laboratory. As well as covering the theory and background to the experiment, short video clips have been included so that students will also have seen the experiment being performed. They should at least recognise the apparatus! The package concludes with a short assessment quiz which must be completed.The packages were mounted on the University network using WebCT and meant that students could undertake the exercises at a time (and place) of their choosing rather than being confined to set laboratory hours.This communication will describe the packages and our experiences as well as an initial evaluation of our approach. Although largely anecdotal, staff felt that they spent less time on more mundane aspects of laboratory work and more time discussing chemistry.Students also felt that they were better prepared for the experiments before they came to the laboratory. Some of the pitfalls and technical problems that had to be overcome willalso be described.

This paper discusses an on-going research on universal design implementation in public buildings in Putrajaya with the applicability to Malaysian Standards of accessibility. The areas of study include disability and accessibility issues, current accessibility system in Malaysia, Malaysian Standards and universal design implementation in built environment, and the importance of public buildings in Putrajaya. Site observation involving facilities measurement and photographic documentation was conducted in ßve signißcant public buildings in this city. Abstract Objectives To examine binge-drinking trends among undergraduate university students (18–24 years) over a five-year span. Methods Data were collected between 2012–17 through an ongoing, cross-sectional health survey at a midsize, northeastern university. Students (n = 2759; 69% female; 59% first-year) self-reported binge-drinking activity over the past 30 days through an online questionnaire. Binge drinking was defined as consumption of ≥4 or 5 drinks on a single occasion for females and males, respectively. Heavy binge drinking behavior was defined as ≥4 episodes of binge drinking in the past 30 days. Proportional differences were analyzed through chi-square analyses. Results Between 2012–17, binge drinking prevalence ranged from 65.1–75.4% among men and 53.9–65.9% among women. Overall, men reported higher rates of binge drinking compared to females (73.2% vs. 59.2%, P < 0.01). Collectively, 35.7% reported heavy binge drinking in the past 30 days. More males report heavy binge drinking over the past 30 days compared to females (49.1% vs. 29.6%, P < 0.01). Upperclass students reported a higher prevalence of binge drinking in the past 30 days compared to first-year students (68.3 vs. 60.3%, P < 0.01). Between 2012–17, binge drinking prevalence ranged from 65.1–75.4% among men and 53.9–65.9% among women. <p>The dynamics of morbidity and prevalence of diseases among the children’s population in Ukraine in recent years has multi-directional trends – an increase in the incidence and prevalence of diseases among children 7-14 years and adolescent children, and the reduction of the morbidity of children of the first year of life, the incidence and prevalence of diseases among children 0- 6 years. The decrease of the morbidity and increase of the prevalence of diseases with age was revealed. At the beginning of the 21st century, the problem of maternal and child health has become one of the priorities of public health protection in the world and was included by the United Nations in the Millennium Development Goals List. Ukraine is designated by the WHO European Regional Committee as a pilot region for the implementation of the Strategy “Health and Development of Children and Adolescents”. A data on children with disabilities in Ukraine are rare and do not give a general idea of the link between morbidity and disability, and because that information is available only by regions, not nosological forms, it can not provide a general picture of morbidity/ disability of young people in order to develop organizational measures to reduce that. The general objective of the Council of Europe Strategy for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities for 2017-2023 is to "shift the paradigm" from the traditional medical approach to disability to a human rights-based approach: independence, freedom of choice, full participation, equality, human dignity and equal opportunities for persons with disabilities. The effective participation of people with disabilities in all spheres of life and society as a whole is crucial for the realization of all human rights and the formation of their life perspective in Ukraine.<strong></strong></p>
