<p><em>Learning English as a foreign language is considered as a long-term process. During the period of learning, students might undergo ‘ups’ and ‘downs’ issue related to motivation swings. It is believed that motivated learners likely to outperform others who have high language aptitude but possess low motivation. For this reason, EFL teachers are required to involve strategies that captivate EFL students’ motivation. Motivating students should not only rely on immediate teaching strategies or a single activity since learning English as a foreign language is not an immediate process. Students tend to show fluctuated motivation in a time while in the other occasions could suffer in learning. </em><em>Hence, how motivation is considered as a process rather than a single state is described. Examining other perspective about motivation and the changing of focus in researching motivation show that seeing motivation as a process indicates more promising results for EFL students’ learning accomplishment. </em><em>Pointing out the importance of motivation in English learning attainment and the need of continuum process in motivating students, this paper offers the practical and comprehensive classroom motivational strategies by applying </em><em>Dörnyei’s motivational taxonomy</em><em>. </em></p>

Learning English as a foreign language is a long journey of language transfer for students in West Sumatera, Indonesia. When the students learn to produce a sentence in English, they often use double language transfers, that is, from Minangkabau language as their native language to Indonesian language as their national language and from Indonesian language to English Language. Furthermore, the effect of literal translation which is used as mainly method in the process of learning languages at schools worsen the students’ errors and mistakes in learning English language. This research seeks to investigate the interferences in English Conversation scripts made by students of UPI YPTK Padang who were assigned to create a conversation in groups to certain topics. The results of the lexical and syntactical interferences found in the scripts indicated that the students are struggling with noun-verb confusion, subject matters, word choices, tenses, and non-existence forms of auxiliaries in L1. The findings provide insight into English learning and teaching techniques and present suggestions for lectures and materials developers.

This investigation was under Classroom Action Research (CAR) and was done in two cycles consisted of four stages namely planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The subjects were the students of SMP Negeri 2 Sinjai Tengah in academic year 2016/2017. The data was collected through observation, questionnaires, and interview. While the results of CAR, both in the first and the second cycle shows that the students’ motivation and participation in the English learning process significantly improved by implementing SA. All students gave positive responses toward the implementation of SA in the English class. Of the two variables, participation variable is higher than the motivation variable. For learning motivation, students’ reaction toward the teacher’s responses and spirit of the students in carrying out their tasks were the most motivating factors of the students in learning. Meanwhile for the classroom participation, classroom embodied action and silent or non-oral participation were the most participation activities favored by students.

Teaching English through an effective curriculum enables EFL students to establish and achieve effective communication. The study aims to investigate issues affecting EFL students by learning English and discussing the role of Portal to English syllabuses in developing the language skills of Qatari school students. Research has harmonized the analytical approach. The required information was collected from a questionnaire distributed to twenty (20) Qatari EFL teachers in preparatory schools. Then, the data was analyzed according to the SPSS system. The results show that the Portal course syllabuses of Qatari preparatory schools introduce language activities that promote oral interaction in addition to the previous syllabuses. This current syllabus motivates students and builds a good understanding of learning English and improving language skills. The textbooks emphasize the use of English in social media and in the practice of Qataris customs and traditions. Portal lessons emphasize oral interactions with group work and discussions. Vocabulary and writing activities are presented and tested in many units in the Portal course series.
