We aimed to detect the differences in emotional intelligence in young people according to some sociodemographic variables. A total of 170 people who were sitting a special-ability examination in order to gain a place in the physical education and sports teaching department at a university formed the sample. We found that there were statistically significant differences in emotional intelligence levels according to the variables of age, hometown, participation in social and sports activities, self-description, and description of family, as well as in the behaviors of the families towards the adolescent. There were no significant differences according to gender, alma mater, or the income level of the family.

Amongst the main objectives of physical education (PE) classes is the consolidation of healthy lifestyle habits in young people and adolescents. Nonetheless, these classes can also provide the basis from which adverse experiences are generated which affect students’ perceptions of these classes. Previously conducted studies have focused on motivational processes and not on emotional processes, nor on the way in which students learn. The objective of the present study was to explore the dark side of the self-determination theory, its influence on emotional intelligence and the meta-cognitive strategies of students. Methodology: A total of 1602 young people undertaking secondary education participated, with self-reported ages between 13 and 19 years. The following questionnaires were utilized: Controlling Coach Behaviors Scale, Frustration of Psychological Needs in PE classes Scale, Emotional Intelligence in PE Scale and Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire. A structural equation model was developed which explained causal associations between the study variables. Results: Psychological control positively predicted each one of the sub-factors of frustration of psychological needs. Frustration of psychological needs negatively predicted emotional intelligence. Finally, emotional intelligence positively predicted meta-cognitive thinking. Conclusions: The influence and importance of the teaching style adopted by teachers is indicated, in addition to the effect of students’ psychological experiences on emotions and learning strategies.

The permanence of children and young people in sports: looks for initiation and sports specialization. The practice of sports activities occupies an increasing space in the lives of people, especially children and young people. Such practice, when properly planned and elaborated, always respecting the human development process, can generate numerous benefits to participants, such as adherence to sports practice. In this circumstance, the study aims to organize contents linked to Initiation of Sport and to the reasons that lead children to remain in sports activities, proposing behaviors that the Physical Education teacher should present in the Initiation of Sports, with a view to non-Early Specialization. The study is characterized as descriptive-propositional bibliographical. Sports Initiation can have a great influence on children and young people. It has different teaching-learning methods, its process is dynamic, and in order to do it, planning is necessary, making the practice a pleasurable activity. Faced with the reasons, one of the reasons that can cause the abandonment sport is the Early Specialization. Another important point to emphasize is motivation, which depends on extrinsic factors, such as parents and parents and teachers, for example, and intrinsic ones, such as making new friends, having fun and practicing an activity that has ease, for example. Therefore, these factors influence the permanence of children and young people in the sports context. In this sense, the appropriate preparation of the Physical Education professional must present adequate professional structure, aiming to adapt their classes to the child and youth audience, in order to respect the specificities and particularities of each stage of development, as well as the interest of the group, promoting classes more attractive, aiming the satisfaction of the practitioners. In addition, the preparation should also be composed of characteristics that make the professional to be able to meet all the expectations imposed in the Initiation of Sport, respecting, of course, the process of plurality of motor skills that must be worked on in Initiation Sport.

In this article we will try to address the importance of attention as a relevant construct in teaching, learning, performance and training of sports activities in its several modalities. We will try to draw attention to the fact that athletes in general, and young people who are developing their learning of a particular sport, are strongly influenced by their attentional profiles (e.g., depending on aspects that are more internal or external to the subjects: in a broadband perspective or with a pronounced and specific focus of the attention). Such conjectures allow us to make considerations regarding the way that teaching / learning models are conceived for physical education classes, since there seems to be a attention profiles fluctuation at different moments of the class, as well as, it cannot be forgotten the relevance of the attentional profiles of each student during the whole learning, developing and consolidating process in the practice of a sporting modality.

A series of six papers on “Youth Development in Europe: Transitions and Identities” has now been published in the European Psychologist throughout 2008 and 2009. The papers aim to make a conceptual contribution to the increasingly important area of productive youth development by focusing on variations and changes in the transition to adulthood and emerging identities. The papers address different aspects of an integrative framework for the study of reciprocal multiple person-environment interactions shaping the pathways to adulthood in the contexts of the family, the school, and social relationships with peers and significant others. Interactions between these key players are shaped by their embeddedness in varied neighborhoods and communities, institutional regulations, and social policies, which in turn are influenced by the wider sociohistorical and cultural context. Young people are active agents, and their development is shaped through reciprocal interactions with these contexts; thus, the developing individual both influences and is influenced by those contexts. Relationship quality and engagement in interactions appears to be a fruitful avenue for a better understanding of how young people adjust to and tackle development to productive adulthood.

The association of these patterns with the variables gender, age and income were tested. Three lifestyle patterns were identified and nomined. The 'Healthy Advanced' lifestyle pattern was associated with females, the elderly and the best income groups can be identified; the 'Healthy Prudent' was associated with older adults, with the elderly and with the intermediate income segment. The 'Unhealthy' pattern was associated with males, with young people and did not have an association with income. It can be concluded that healthy lifestyle patterns were more present in female groups, with older age and better income level. The less healthy pattern was found more frequently among men and young people. It is noteworthy that this last pattern did not differ between income strata indicating that unhealthy practices may be equally disseminated in these groups. Key messages The better lifestyle patterns were more present in female groups, with older age and better income level.
