Reliability and validity of the Social Curiosity Scale among Chinese university students

My aim in this study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the Social Curiosity Scale (SCS) among Chinese university students. Social curiosity has been conceptualized as an interest in how other people behave, think, and feel. Students (N = 916) at 3 general universities in Henan Province completed the Chinese version of the SCS. The results showed that the Chinese SCS has good internal consistency reliability. Exploratory factor analysis results indicated that the Chinese SCS presented a clear 2-factor structure, and confirmatory factor analysis results showed that the 2-factor model fitted the data better than the 1-factor model did. These results indicated that the Chinese version of the SCS has good construct validity. Therefore, the Chinese version of the SCS can be used as an effective tool for social curiosity measurement among Chinese university students.

Prosopagnosia, also known as facial blindness, has attracted wide attention in the social field in recent years. However, it mainly depends on the self-report of the chief complaint in the actual diagnosis. In addition, there is a lack of standardized measurement basis, which brings a lot of inconvenience to the patients themselves and follow-up researchers. In this study, we tested the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of 20 - item prosopagnosia index (PI-20). 647 young people aged 18-45 filled in PI-20, the adult autistic quotient scale, the empathy quotient questionnaire, and completed the retest one month later. Results showed that the PI-20 has good internal consistency reliability, test-retest reliability, and has good validity. In addition, confirmatory factor analysis shows that the model can well fit the data of Chinese population and can be used for large-scale measurement. The Chinese version PI-20 is a reliable measurement for prosopagnosia.

This paper presents the preliminary evidence for validating the Self-authorship Section of the Career Decision Making Survey (SA-CDMS; Creamer, Baxter Magolda, & Yue, 2010) among Chinese university students. Two samples of undergraduate students (Stage One, N= 263; Stage Two, N= 663) from three universities in the People’s Republic of China participated in this study. In the first stage, the SA-CDMS was translated from English to Chinese, with the psychometric properties preliminarily examined by exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency test. The original 18-item SA-CDMS model failed to identify the theoretical structures as expected, however, several modifications could be identified from the results of Stage One. In the second stage, the modified SA-CDMS showed acceptable reliability and validity based on the results of confirmatory factor analysis and Cronbach’s alpha coefficients. In addition, Pearson’s correlation analysis was employed by Stage Two to examine the correlations among the demographic factors, three phases, and three dimensions of self-authorship framework. In general, the current study provided evidence for utilizing SA-CDMS in the Chinese higher education context. This study added to the literature of the research on self-authorship and offered practical implications to educators and policymakers in promoting self-authorship development among Chinese university students.

The aim in this study was to examine whether contingency of domain self-esteem moderates the effect of domain self-esteem on global self-esteem. Chinese university students (N = 320) completed the Contingencies of Self-worth Scale and the Self-worth Questionnaire (both by Yang, Hu, Pang, & Wang, 2007) and the Chinese version (Robinson, Shaver, & Wrightsman, 1997) of the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965). Results indicated that in domains that the individual could control, such as ability or behavior style, domain self-esteem directly influenced global self-esteem; in domains that the individual could not control, such as appearance and nationality, contingency of domain self-esteem moderated the effect of domain self-esteem on global self-esteem. Cultural differences in contingencies of domain self-esteem are also discussed.

IntroductionThe F-Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale is a widely used instrument to assess perfectionism trait. The original scale comprises 35-items that measure the six dimensions of Frost et al (1990) conceptualization of perfectionism: personal standards (PS), concern over mistakes (CM), doubts about actions (DA), parental criticism (PC), Parental expectations (PE) and Organization (O).ObjectiveTo examine the factor structure of the 24-items short form of the F-MPS using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), in a sample of Portuguese university students.MethodsThe sample comprises 344 university students (68.4% females), with an average age of 20.69 years (SD = 1.59; range = 17–24). They completed a version of F-MPS with 24 items that results from the selection of the four items with highest loadings in the respective six dimensions of the original Portuguese version (Amaral et al., 2013).ResultsAfter correlated errors, we obtained a good fit for the FMPS with six factors (X2/df = 2.125; CFI = .936; GFI = .891, RMSEA = .057; P[rmsea≤ .05] = .043). The 24-item F-MPS short form revealed good internal consistency (α = .825). The six dimensions showed acceptable or good internal consistency, as revealed by Cronbach's alpha (α: PS = .80; CM = .76; DA = .82; PC = .84; PE = .89, O = .85).ConclusionsThe F-MPS 24 items short form CFA confirmed the six factor model as a reliable and valid measure to assess multidimensional perfectionism in Portuguese university students.Disclosure of interestThe authors have not supplied their declaration of competing interest.

Counsellors are important key members in Chinese universities. In this paper, on the one hand, we compared student affairs workers’ occupational characteristics, classification and development of western as well as Chinese university. On the other hand, Chinese university faculty members and students are our subjects. Of 800 pieces circulated, 537 pieces are found to be effective. We verified the reliability and validity of data, then conducted correlation analysis, exploratory factor analysis (EFA), and confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The test has good reliability and validity. Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and the split-half reliability coefficient are all above 0.9, indicating that the actual value is in good accordance with the true value. The internal alpha coefficient and the split-half reliability coefficient of each factor are all above 0.8. Χ2/df<5. GFI, AGFI, NFI, CFI, IFI,RMSEA and the other indicators are fitting, and this test meets measurement requirements. A 5-factor model is formulated based on the research results, including: moral quality; professional competence; political awareness; instructive ability; interpersonal skills. This 5-factor model reflects the evaluation of faculty members and students in universities on qualities of counsellors and transformation in their expectation for the role counsellors play as time goes by. So we summarize the qualities of counsellors are constantly changing. These changes have been constantly evolving in time, and their traits are such as: Objectivity of the times, Initiative of inner, Predictability of practice. Being well aware of the trend of this career is conducive to the formation of a sound relationship between counsellors and students, measurability for morality-oriented education, and improvement in counsellors’ overall qualities.

Empathy and theory of mind (ToM) are distinctive psychological constructs in predicting children’s social functioning. This study provided evidence of the independent nature of these constructs and developed a parent questionnaire for measuring individual differences in children’s empathy and ToM. In Study 1, exploratory factor analysis and confirmatory factor analysis based on responses of 116 parents of Hong Kong children established a three-factor structure of the Empathy and Theory of Mind Scale (EToMS), that is, Empathy, Nice ToM, and Nasty ToM. An additional 189 parents of Study 2 confirmed this three-factor model. A subsample of 93 children (M=4.97, SD = .84, 47 boys) from Study 2 took part in child measures of helping and lying behaviors as well as false belief understanding. The results supported the reliability and validity of the EToMS, making it a useful assessment of children’s social predispositions.
