Background: Ophthalmia neonatorum (ON) is the most widespread eye infection occurring in the first 28 days of life. Although most of these cases are benign, some may progress to systemic complications or blindness if left untreated. Objectives: The current study was conducted with the aim of revealing the bacteriological causes of conjunctivitis in neonates and the antibiotic sensitivity pattern of these bacteria. Subjects and methods: The study included all neonates at the age of 1 to 28 days presenting at the neonatal nurseries with Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and level II care beds in three hospitals; Authority of Al-Thawra General Hospital, Al-Kuwait University Hospital and Al-Sabeen Maternity and Child Hospital in Sana’a city, Yemen. A full history was taken from each nurse and mothers of the neonates included in the study in which the findings were recorded in a predesigned questionnaire including socio demographic, maternal clinical information and therapeutic interventions. To isolate the causative agent, the conjunctival swabs were inoculated on proper media and bacteria were identified by standard microbiological methods and antibiotic resistance was done for the isolates. Results: 203 swabs were collected from newborns with eye discharge over a nine-month period. Positive growth rate was 51.7%, males were more affected (57.1%), 80% of affected neonates had low birth weight, 71.4% of preterm infants were most affected (p <0.01).  There was a significant relationship between invasive and non-invasive mechanical ventilation with neonatal conjunctivitis (p<0.05). Gentamicin showed good in vitro sensitivity to all bacteria isolated, Staphylococcus aureus (83%), Escherichia coli 84.6%, with P. aeruginosa it was 60%. Conclusion: The vast majority of cases of neonatal conjunctivitis were mild with a high level of occurrence, Staphylococcus aureus and Klebsiella pneumoniae were the major bacterial agents, neonatal conjunctivitis most likely to be a hospital-acquired infection. There was a significant association between phototherapy, non-invasive ventilation and incidence of neonatal conjunctivitis . Background: Bacterial conjunctivitis is often observed in newborns as well as in other age groups. It has been associated with several organisms that differed in their relative importance and varied in their response to ophthalmic antibiotics. Objectives: The aim of this study was to investigate bacterial conjunctivitis of adult patients by determine the specific bacterial causes and determine the  ophthalmic antibiotic resistance patterns for the bacterial isolates from conjunctivitis patients in Sana’a city, Yemen.  Methods: Total 521 bacterial swabs obtained from adult patients with suspected bacterial conjunctivitis introducing to the ophthalmology clinics in the tertiary hospitals in Sana’a city, Yemen between September 2016 and October 2017 were investigated for bacteriological agents and antibiotic susceptibility . The clinical samples culturing, and microbiology diagnosis were done at National Center of Public Health laboratories Sana’a (NCPHL).  Result: Total 521 swab results from conjunctiva were performed, of which 206 (39.5%) were deemed positive for bacterial culture. The isolation rate by bacteria species ranged from 0.5% to 28.2%. In Staphylococcus aureus isolates, ophthalmic antibiotic resistance varied from 10.5% for polymyxin B to 66.7% for erythromycin. In Branhamella catarrahalis isolates, ophthalmic antibiotic resistance ranged from 3.4% for levofloxacin to 69% for erythromycin. In Haemophilus influenzae isolates, ophthalmic antibiotic resistance varied from 0.0% for ciprofloxacin and polymyxin B to 42.1% for erythromycin and azithromycin. Conclusion: The most common causative organisms in adult age groups were Branhamella catarrahalis and Staphylococcus aureus. Obviously, there is no single drug that treats these various types of bacteria. Therefore, bacteriological culture and sensitivity in the laboratory to ophthalmic antibiotics should be performed as much as possible. Introduction: Antibiotics are helpful in bacterial infection control and management. Irrational antibiotic use leads to resistance, which puts modern medicines achievements at risk. This study aims to know antibiotic resistance and sensitivity patterns and to assess possible factors that favor the development of antibiotic resistance. Methods: It is a retrospective observational study. Data collected from June 2019 to May 2020 from the culture & sensitivity records of various clinical isolates at the Microbiology department of SMC, Vijayawada, and analyzed by descriptive statistics. Results: Total samples collected 2905. Only746 samples showed significant growth. Most commonly, isolated organisms were from Pus and Body fluids Staphylococcus aureus (31.16%), Klebsiella (23.02%), from blood samples Staphylococcus aureus (44%,) Klebsiella (32%), from urine samples Escherichia coli (27.31%),Staphylococcus aureus (16.66%). Bacteria isolated from, Blood and Pus & body fluid samples showed more resistance to Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid, 60% &58.60%, and urine samples showed more resistance to Norfloxacin69.44%. Conclusion: In this study, bacteria isolated from, blood, pus, and body fluid samples showed more resistance to Amoxicillin + Clavulanic acid, from urine samples showed more resistance to Norfloxacin. Parenterally used drugs like aminoglycosides and vancomycin have retained their sensitivity but bacteria also showed resistance to Imipenem, Vancomycin, new combinations like Cefoperazone + Sulbactam. A culture & sensitivity test and following antibiotic stewardship guidelines before prescribing antibiotics will give good results to prevent antibiotic resistance.

A major concern in public health is Antibiotic resistance among pathogenic microorganisms. There are several organisms developing resistance to commonly used antibiotics in different locations and time. This study assessed patterns of antibiotic resistance in line with the WHO classification of antibiotics. A cross-sectional study was carried out from September 2020 to January 2021 in 4 randomly selected hospitals. Of all 442 patients recruited for this study, twenty-seven percent (122) were randomly selected for Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing using the modified Kirby-Bauer disk diffusion method, and SPSS version 23 was used for analysis. The most predominant isolate was Staphylococcus aureus. Resistance by Staphylococcus aureus was noted against Amoxicillin, Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole, Amoxicillin clavulanic acid, Gentamicin, and Cefuroxime. Resistance by E. coli against Chloramphenicol 80%, cefuroxime 100%, Trimethoprim-Sulfamethoxazole 83.3%, Resistance by Klebsiella spp; against Ampicillin Second and third-generation cephalosporin and Gentamicin 100%. Resistance by Streptococcus spp; Ampicillin 100% and Ampicillin cloxacillin 100%, cefuroxime 100%, and Ciprofloxacin 100%. Ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin were active against Salmonella species, Pseudomonas species, klebsiella, and Escherichia coli. Azithromycin, imipenem, and meropenem with high susceptibility to local bacterial isolates sample tested. The access group antibiotics showed a low susceptibility rate to local bacteria isolate with increase resistance to the watch group. Antibiogram was developed to guide empirical treatment type that is predominant in the district. Most bacteria isolated from health facilities in Kwara South were resistant to the access group. The resistance to watch a group of WHO antibiotics classification is building very fast. Keywords: Antibiotic Resistance, Empirical Treatment, Susceptible.

A comparative study of an old and fresh ATCC strain of Staphylococcus aureus was carried out to determine the mechanism of antibiotic resistance of the old one, which had been preserved in lyophilized condition. Five different antibiotics having five different modes of action were used. They included amoxicillin, azithromycin, neomycin, ciprofloxacin and polymixin B. Agar diffusion technique was followed to determine the antibiotic sensitivity. It was observed that the old strain showed the highest resistance against amoxicillin, whereas no remarkable changes in the sensitivity pattern were observed against polymixin B and neomycin. In case of azithromycin and ciprofloxacin, the old strain showed resistance up to some extent. From these results it was clearly evident that in the controlled preserved conditions, cell wall-mediated resistance was predominating, while the cell membrane- and 30S ribosome-mediated resistance were the least likely ones. The nucleic acid synthesis inhibitors and the 50S ribosomal protein synthesis inhibitor lied in between these two extremes showing variations up to some extent in the sensitivity pattern between the old and fresh ATCC strain of S. aureus. Background:  Trachoma is a communicable infection of the eye by certain strains of the Chlamydia trachomatis. It is the principal cause of loss of sight globally. Mass drug administration (MDA) with azithromycin is a foundation stone of World Health Organization (WHO)’s global struggle to eradicate trachoma by 2020.  Aims: The main objectives of the campaign's third monitoring are to check improvement of interventions and improvement of quality across times and activities implemented in seven selected districts of Ibb and Al-Hodeida governorates, Yemen. Methods: A community based cross-sectional coverage survey was performed. 68 divisions were selected per selected districts of the two governorates. A disconnect Results Entry Form for each district surveyed was finished, saved and uploaded directly into the online Coverage Survey Analysis Tool to check improvement of interventions and improvement of quality across times and activities implemented. Results: The national campaign for MDA covers 966 villages in 6 districts of Ibb and Al-Hodeidah governorates by 1932 healthcare workers. A total number of beneficiaries who were monitored from 476 homes reached 3,077, of whom 2,755 (90%, coverage rate) took the dose. The availability rates of trachoma medicines were ranged from 82% to 91% . The improper arrangement of treatment sessions rate was 17%, the incorrect position of the dose pole was 6%, while the correct records of drugs scored the rate of 99%, and the proper storage of drugs rate was 70%.  The community collaboration during the treatment campaign the acceptable rate was 92%, while 3% exhibited unacceptable behaviors towards the treatment campaign. Conclusion: In this survey, the national campaign for MDA in the 966 villages reach the target threshold (i.e. 90%) for effective coverage; with proper rates for the availability of trachoma medicines, good people reactions towards taking treatment,  and  the community collaboration; while bad rates for the improper arrangement of treatment sessions , the incorrect position of the dose pole and  the preparation dosages by MDA team. Background: Antimicrobial resistance is one of the latest challenges facing the scientific community. Raising the drug resistance is caused mainly by indiscriminate usage of antibiotics in human and animal subjects and the spread of antibiotic resistance between the two has an emerging global threat. Hence, current study aimed to study the antimicrobial resistance pattern and molecular detection of antibiotic resistance genes in Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli isolated from mastitis affected cows. Methods: Milk samples from mastitis affected cows were subjected to antibiotic sensitivity test and screened for presence of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli using differential growth media. Molecular characterization of Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli was done with the help of PCR by amplification of ‘nuc’ and ‘uspA’ gene respectively. MICs of Penicillin and Tetracycline were determined using microdilution method. Result: Antibiotic sensitivity pattern for Penicillin G, Ampicillin, Amoxycillin, Cefotaxime, Ceftriaxone, Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, Gentamicin, Oxytetracycline, Tetracycline and Vancomycin were 74.19%, 100%, 93.50%, 61.29%, 29%, 35.48%, 9.70%, 9.70%, 70.96% and 70.96% respectively. More than 87.90% of the S. aureus and 50% of the E. coli isolated were resistant to â-lactam antibiotics while 75% of the E.coli and 65.70% of the S. aureus isolated were resistant to Tetracycline antibiotics. The MICs of Penicillin for S.aureus and E.coli are 26.88 µg/ml and 13.54 µg/ml respectively and the MICs of Tetracycline for S. aureus and E. coli are 243.75 µg/ml and 960.93 µg/ml respectively which is 8-9 folds higher than the standard MICs. From the present study, it can be inferred that bovine mastitis cases are highly resistant to antimicrobial drugs. Results further indicate that Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli are both resistant to Penicillin and Tetracycline with very high MIC.

A cross sectional descriptive study was done to find out the causative organisms and their antibiotic sensitivities in the Department of Microbiology in collaboration with the Department of Paediatrics, Rajshahi Medical College Hospital (RMCH), Rajshahi during the period of July 2014 to June 2015. A total of 116 blood samples were taken aseptically from patients who were suspected of neonatal septicemia. Blood was then inoculated in Brain heart infusion broth. Bacterial isolation, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing were done by standard microbiological methods. Among 116 cases, 33(28.4%) were found to be culture positive. The most commonly isolated causative agents of neonatal septicemia were Staphylococcus aureus 17(51.5%) followed by Escherichia coli 10(30.3%), Streptococcus pneumoniae 03(9.09%), Klebsiella pneumoniae 02(6.06%) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa 01(3.03%). In general, all the Gram positive and Gram negative isolates were highly sensitive to meropenem, amikacin, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin. Gram positive bacteria were found to be particularly sensitive to vancomycin. They were moderately sensitive to ceftazidime followed in amoxicillin but were totally resistant to ampicillin. This study revealed that Staphylococcus aureus and E.coli are predominant causative organisms in neonatal septicemia and these are highly sensitive to meropenem, amikacin, gentamicin and ciprofloxacin.Faridpur Med. Aim and objective: The study attempts to investigate the knowledge and actual condition of antibiotic uses among university students to get rid from different infectious diseases. Methods: The study was conducted in a residential dormitory of a public university of Bangladesh. About 145 (n=145) students took part in the study which was conducted in January, 2020. Data were collected on the basis of a questionnaire made of basic questions about antibiotics and its resistance. Results: Among 145 students, 94.5% previously known about antibiotic which is impressive but a vast majority (46.4%) had no idea about antibiotic resistance and 51% did not know anything what will happen if bacteria become resistant to antibiotics which is alarming. It was found that the most used antibiotic was Azithromycin (46.4%), whereas amoxicillin (40%) was second highest. Those antibiotics were used to treat mostly fever (63.4%), various infections (31%), cold cough(25.4%),diarrhea(15.5%) irritable bowel syndrome(9.9%) etc. Most students (83.7%) used antibiotics as per doctor’s prescription. About 50% students had knowledge about antibiotic course and resistance which was evaluated by simple yes/no question.
