SummaryHeavy metal in waste water potentiallycauses environmental pollution. Generally, heavy metal pollutions come from metalplating, textile, latex-rubber goods, and otherindustries. The process of latex-rubber goodindustries uses heavy metal in the form ofZnO as accelerator for rubber vulcanizationprocess, so that Zn 2+ ion exists in wastewatereffluents in concentration as much as 300 ppm, whereas the maximum limit allowed is 2.5 ppm.The chemical way generally used to decreaseZn 2+ concentration in wastewater effluents isby adding bases, NaOH or Ca(OH) 2 until pHreached 11, hence this metal is precipitated asits hydroxide. However, the way is done, isvery high cost and has a risk of the emergencesecondary pollution caused by excess base. Analternative way to absorb Zn 2+ consideredinexpensive is by using biosorbent in the formof Saccharomyces cerevisiae biomass frombioethanol industrial waste. The research wasconducted using artificial wastewater withZn 2+ ion concentration of 300 ppm and the pHwas adjusted to the range between 3-7.Biosorption was conducted by addition of freeS. cerevisiae biomass as well as byimmobilized cells on filter paper. Observationwas carried out for Zn 2+ concentration aftercontact time of two and five hours. The resultsof the research indicated that free andimmobilized S. cerevisiae biomass couldabsorb Zn 2+ metal and decreased itsconcentration from 250-300 ppm to 20-50 ppm.The optimum contact time was reached at onehour, while optimum sorption process occurredat pH 5. At low concentration, less than20 ppm S. cerevisiae biomass absorbed lessZn 2+ The NaOH-treated biomass showed bettersorption capabilities compared to cells treatedby formaldehyde or heat treatments. A study of removal of heavy metal ions from heavy metal contaminated water using agro-waste was carried out with Musa paradisiaca peels as test adsorbent. The study was carried by adding known quantities of lead (II) ions and cadmium (II) ions each and respectively into specific volume of water and adding specific dose of the test adsorbent into the heavy metal ion solution, and the mixture was agitated for a specific period of time and then the concentration of the metal ion remaining in the solution was determined with Perkin Elmer Atomic absorption spectrophotometer model 2380. The effect of contact time, initial adsorbate concentration, adsorbent dose, pH and temperature were considered. From the effect of contact time results equilibrium concentration was established at 60minutes. The percentage removal of these metal ions studied, were all above 90%. Adsorption and percentage removal of Pb2+ and Cd2+ from their aqueous solutions were affected by change in initial metal ion concentration, adsorbent dose pH and temperature. Adsorption isotherm studies confirmed the adsorption of the metal ions on the test adsorbent with good mathematical fits into Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms. Regression correlation (R2) values of the isotherm plots are all positive (>0.9), which suggests too, that the adsorption fitted into the isotherms considered.

Study about the use of active charcoal rice straws (AAJP) was done in order to decrease heavy metal ion on textile waste water by using photocatalyst AAJP/TiO2. Rice straws were gained from the Banyumas Regency and samples textile waste water from one of textile industry in Pemalang. This study was begun by the making of active charcoal from the rice straws, and then the modification of photocatalyst AAJP/TiO2 was done with the comparison 1:99, 2:98, 3:97, 4:96, 5:95. The test of heavy metal ion photoreduction was done with some parameters such as weight comparison (1:99, 2:98, 3:97, 4:96, 5:95), pH effect (2, 5, 7, 9, 13) and the effect of ray source (sun light and the UV lamp). Analysis of photocatalyst material used SEM and heavy metal ion concentration used AAS. Results show that optimum photocatalyst activity in weight comparison AAJP300oC / TiO2 (1:99) with decrease concentration was 65.02% for heavy metal ion, mean while AAJP700oC / TiO2 (3:97) with decreased concentration of heavy metal ion is 94.50%. Optimal process for heavy metal ion reduction occur at pH 2 with decreased concentration of heavy metal ion for AAJP300oC / TiO2 (1:99) is 99.87% and for AAJP700oC /TiO2 (3:97) is 100%. The source of UV lamp was good for heavy metal ion photoreduction (AAJP300oC/TiO2(1:99) was 99.87% and AAJP700oC/TiO2 (3:97) was 100%)

In this study, a natural low-coast, efficient, and eco- bio-sorbent plant material (Ludwigia stolonifera), with both parts of the root and shoot, were studied for the removal of the cationic metal ions, lead Pb2+ and chromium Cr6+, via batch mode experiments to evaluate their maximum adsorption capacity, and held a comparison between the used bio-sorbent roots and shoots, based on the highest bio-sorption potential. Optimization of the bio-sorption parameters, such as contact time, pH, bio-sorbent (root and shoot) dosage, and initial ion concentration was conducted. The results indicated that 1.6 g of the used bio-sorbent shoot material removed 81.4% of Pb2+, and 77% of Cr6+ metal ions from liquid media under the conditions of 100 ppm of initial metal ions concentration at room temperature for 60 min of contact time with the static condition. Different isotherms and kinetic models were fit to the experimental data to understand the nature of the bio-sorption process. The experimental data were best fit by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with a high correlation coefficient (R2 = 0.999), which reveals the chemisorption nature of the bio-sorption process. The chemical and structural analysis of the used bio-sorbent, before and after Cr6+ and Pb2+ bio-sorption, were performed using different techniques of characterization, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The used bio-sorbent proved to be a low-cost, efficient, and eco-friendly material to remove heavy metal ions from aqueous solutions.

This paper investigated the use of yam peel as a natural adsorbent for the removal of Copper (Cu) and Manganese (Mn) from waste water. The yam peels were thoroughly washed with distilled water, dried, pulverized and carbonized. The carbonized yam peel was then characterized for its particle sizes, moisture content, ash content, volatile matter, Methylene Blue number, Iodine number. The raw yam peels were prepared using the same procedure, but was not carbonized. The adsorption of Mn(II) and Cu(II) ions were investigated using adsorption experiment at room temperature. The effect of contact time, metal ion concentration and dosage were evaluated. The residual concentrations of the metal ions were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS). Experimental data obtained were analyzed using Kinetic models and Isotherms such as Pseudo- First order kinetic models, Pseudo-second order kinetic models, Langmuir isotherms and Freundlich isotherm. The analysis showed that the pseudo-second order kinetic model best described the adsorption of the metal ions; ( Cu; r2 = 0.991 for RYP and r2 = 0.834 for AYP) and (Mn; r2 = 0.958 for RYP and r2 = 0.896 for AYP) and the experimental data best fit the Freundlich model; (Cu; r2 = 0.564 for RYP and r2 = 0.871 for AYP) and (Mn; r2 = 0.685 for RYP and r2 = 0.736 for AYP). Finally, optimum removal efficiencies of 30.54% for Mn(II) and 39.62% for Cu(II) were obtained for AYP at concentrations of 50mg/l and mass dosage of 1.0g, 120 minutes contact time and a pH of 6.8.

Water pollution by heavy metal is great concern due to its toxicity to nature and environment. Extensive studies were carried out to remove heavy metal through physical, chemical and biological approaches. One of the biological approaches is biosorption. This study was conducted under several conditions namely pH, biosorbent dosage, initial wastewater concentration and contact time. Final concentrations of metals were tested using Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS). The results revealed that optimum removal for Lead and Zinc was 77.3% and 90.30%. Optimum pH, for Lead was 6.0 whereas Zinc was 7.0 respectively. Both metals have showed the same optimum biosorbent dosage of 0.02g and 30 minutes of contact times. Meanwhile, the optimum initial metal concentration for Lead and Zinc were 5 ppm and 1ppm. It is proven that watermelon rind is able to treat wastewater with the present of Lead and Zinc.
