Abstract The current study presents a simple and scalable method for the synthesis of (aminomethyl)phosphonic acid-functionalized graphene oxide (AMPA-GO) adsorbent. The chemical structure of the new material was disclosed by different instrumental analyses (e.g. FTIR, Raman, XPS, AFM, TEM, XRD, CHN, and UV), and two pertinent mechanisms namely nucleophilic substitution and condensation were suggested for its formation. Adsorption experiments revealed that both AMPA-GO and plain GO have a high affinity toward Th(IV) ions, but the AMPA-GO is superior in terms of adsorption capacity, rate of adsorption, selectivity, pH effect, etc. Indeed, the AMPA-GO can uptake Th(IV) nearly instantaneously, and coexisting Na+ ions have no effect on its adsorption. Thanks to Langmuir isotherm, the maximum adsorption capacities of the GO and AMPA-GO were obtained 151.06 and 178.67 mg g−1, respectively. Interestingly, GO and AMPA-GO both showed a higher preference for thorium over uranium so that the average “K d (Th)/K d (U)” for them was 52 and 44, respectively. This data suggests that chromatographic separation of thorium and uranium is feasible by these adsorbents.

The ability of bagasse adsorbents to adsorb methylene blue without activation using 0.5 M H2SO4 solution was examined. Methylene blue is widely used in the textile industry because it produces bright colors, and the dyeing process is fast and easy. This research aims to determine the optimum adsorption conditions, namely the variations in contact time, dye concentration, adsorbent mass, and pH effect on methylene blue, which were carried out using the batch method. Furthermore, the adsorbents were characterized by FT-IR and SEM. The optimum state of the bagasse adsorbent to adsorb methylene blue dye has a mass of 0.5 grams, a contact time of 30 minutes, a concentration of 50 ppm, and a pH of 5. The character of the adsorbent after activation with H2SO4 was better than without activation. The highest adsorption efficiency of methylene blue dye in the batch method was 99.67%. The FTIR spectrum of the bagasse adsorbent showed OH, C-H, C=O, C=C, and C-O functional groups. The adsorption isotherm model for methylene blue dye follows the Langmuir isotherm since the graph obtained is linear with the correlation coefficient (R2) = 1, where the adsorbent has a homogeneous surface.

We have synthesized sulfonamide based nano-composites of SiO2 and TiO2 for selective and sensitive determination of toxic metal ion Hg2+ in aqueous medium. Nano-composites (11) and (12) were morphologically characterized with FT-IR, solid state NMR, UV-vis, FE SEM, TEM, EDX, BET, pXRD and elemental analysis. The comparative sensing behavior, pH effect and sensor concentrations were carried out with fluorescence signaling on spectrofluorometer and nano-composites (11) and (12), both were evaluated as “turn-on” fluorescence detector for the toxic Hg2+ ions. The LODs were calculated to be 41.2 and 18.8 nM, respectively of nano-composites (11) and (12). The detection limit of TiO2 based nano-composites was found comparatively lower than the SiO2 based nano-composites.

The effect on color of the initial pH employed in dulce de leche (DL) production was evaluated through physicochemical and spectroscopical characterization of the melanoidins formed in the process. Melanoidins originated at pH values of 6.5, 7.0, and 7.5, and they were released by the enzymatic hydrolysis of the protein backbone and purified by gel filtration. They showed a significant degree of polydispersity, in general, with molecular weights (MWs) below 1,800 Da. DL produced at a higher pH released melanoidins with higher average MW after the enzymatic hydrolysis. They also presented darker colors (dE*ab, C*), more closely resembling those typical of the commercial product. Analysis of the fractions isolated by gel filtration using HPLC-DAD and multinuclear NMR showed an heterogeneous and complex composition. Even though structurally related, the 1H NMR spectra of melanoidins showed a higher degree of aromaticity at higher pH values. In conclusion, the pH employed in DL production affects the amount and structure of the colored products originated by MR reactions, and thus the color of the final product.

Objective: The objective of the present study was to develop, optimize, and evaluate Ibandronate-sodium loaded chitosan nanoparticles (Ib-CS NPs) to treat osteoporosis. Methods: NPs were prepared by the Ionic gelation method and optimized for various parameters such as the effect of concentration of chitosan, sodium tripolyphosphate (TPP), and pH effect on particle size polydispersity index (PDI), zeta potential, and entrapment efficiency. The prepared nanoparticles were characterized using particle size analyzer (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).  Results: Formulated NPs were obtained in the average nano size in the range below 200 nm in TEM, SEM, and DLS studies. The particle size and encapsulation efficiency of the optimized formulation were 176.1 nm and 63.28%, respectively. The release profile of NPs was depended on the dissolution medium and followed the First-order release kinetics. Conclusion: Bisphosphonates are the most commonly prescribed drugs for treating osteoporosis in the US and many other countries, including India. Ibandronate is a widely used anti-osteoporosis drug, exhibits a strong inhibitory effect on bone resorption performed by osteoclast cells. Our results indicated that Ibandronate sodium-loaded chitosan nanoparticles provide an effective medication for the treatment of osteoporosis.

Stainless steels (SS) are the most-used alloys for manufacturing fixed orthodontic appliances due to their attractive set of mechanical properties, biocompatibility, and high corrosion resistance. Nevertheless, during regular orthodontic treatments–taking at least around 2 years–the intraoral environment inevitably degrades these bioalloys, releasing metallic ions into the oral cavity. In the first part of this in vitro study, the corrosion resistance of commercial SS appliances (brackets, tubes, and bands) was evaluated in Fusayama-Meyer artificial saliva at pH values of 2.3 and 6.8 over the course of 30 days. As expected, the results corroborated that salivary pH highly influences corrosion behaviour. Released Ni, Cr, and Fe were within dietary intake values. In the second part, a novel approach for oral corrosion prevention based on the chemical inertness of DLC materials is presented. SS surfaces were functionalized with biocompatible a-C:H-sputtered coatings and submitted to the same experimental conditions. The anticorrosion ability of this system was demonstrated, preventing the pitting corrosion that occurred on the SS substrates. Despite the galvanic coupling effect due to the presence of the Cr-based interlayer, this study enhanced the potential use of the reactive sputter-deposited a-C:H coatings in orthodontics.
