AbstractAbility to quantify the amounts of N 2 fixed in agri-cultural land is critical to manage the N cycle for optimalfood and plantation crop production. Isotope and relatednuclear technique such as 15 N isotope dilution technique hasplayed a significant role in nutrient management analysis forquantification of biological N 2 fixation. A field experiment has beeninitiated at IBRIEC to assess the N 2 fixing capacity ofrhizobacterium isolated from sandy textured soil at CentralKalimantan and evaluate the potential of bacteria N 2 fixingon corn (Zea mays). Field experiment has been conducted atCiomas Research Station, IBRIEC-Bogor for four months. The field experiment has been organized according to themethod of Randomized Complete Blocks Design with sixtreatments and three replicates. The results of this studysuggested that the method was reliable for estimation of %Ndfa as well as quantitative analysis of the amount of N fixedfrom the atmosphare. The proportion of N 2 uptake derivedfrom the atmophere was estimated as 32% of the whole plantbasis which was equivalent to approximately 4.8 kg N/ha.The inoculation of Rhizobacterium increased dry matter ofcorn leaves, roots, and grains significantly. A field experiment was carried out during summer seasons of two consecutive years 2010 and 2011 to assess the effect of irrigation levels and agrochemicals. Application of eight irrigations (at seedling, six leaf, knee-high, before tasseling, 50% tasseling, 50% silking, grain formation and grain filling stages) significantly improved plant height at harvest over rest of irrigation treatments during both the years. On pooled mean basis, the magnitude of increase in plant height at harvest due to eight irrigations was in the order of 28.41, 18.49, 10.96 and 4.31 per cent over four, five, six and seven irrigations, respectively. Dry matter accumulation at 50 Day after sowing and at harvest significantly improved with eight and seven irrigations over four, five and six irrigations during both the years of the study.

SUMMARYA field experiment to study the response of pop corn (Zea mays Everta) to various levels of nitrogen and plant population was undertaken at the Research Station, Bajaura (HP) during kharif 1974 and 1975. Increases in nitrogen level from 0 to 60 kg N/ha increased grain yield significantly by 54·8%, but yield differences between 60 and 90 kg N/ha were non-significant. Various plant densities did not affect yield significantly. Yield-contributory characters were significantly influenced by treatments and were interrelated with yield under the influence of nitrogen and plant population levels.

The present study entitled “effect of weed control on weeds, grain yield and its components of maize (Zea mays L.) cv. Single cross-10 was carried out at the Agricultural and Experiments Research Station at Giza, Faculty of Agriculture, Cairo University, Egypt. The experiment was conducted in the summer 2017 and was repeated in 2018 on the same piece of land to conform previous findings. The experiment design was Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) having three replications. Six treatments include atrazine (1.0 kg/ha), glyphosate (0.8 kg/ha). atrazine + glyphosate, one hand hoeing after three weeks, hand hoeing twice after three and five weeks from sowing and weedy chick as control were used. Results indicated that glyphosate was found superior to atrazine for all studied characters. Moreover, lower weed dry matter accumulation and higher weed control % as well as higher values of ear characters ( ear length, ear diameter, grain weight/ear and shilling %) and grain yield per unit area were recorded in tank mix application of atrazine + glyphosate followed by hand hoeing twice.

SUMMARYThe isotope dilution technique was used to measure endogenous faecal excretion and absorption of dietary Ca and P by growing lambs. Groups of four lambs were given 0·8 or 1·2 kg/day of a pelleted barley and soya-bean diet containing 4·2 g P/kg D.M. and supplemented to contain 1·79, 3·52 or 4·67 g Ca/kg D.M.At the lowest dietary concentration of Ca, absorption of Ca was insufficient to meet the Ca required for deposition in the newly formed bone matrix of the skeleton; retention was 0·39, 1·16 and 1·12 g/day with increasing dietary Ca concentration. The proportion of dietary Ca absorbed decreased (P < 0·001) with increasing Ca intake, ranging from 0·85 to 0·44. Endogenous faecal excretion of Ca was independent of the absorption of dietary Ca, but increased (P < 0·05) from 17·2 at the lower to 21·1 mg/kg live weight/day at the higher D.M. intake. Plasma concentration of Ca was higher for the female (2·51) than the male (2·33 mmol/1) lambs and increased linearly (P < 0·001) with dietary concentration of Ca from 2·31 to 2·52 mmol/l.The retention of P increased with Ca and D.M. intake. On the other hand, the proportion of dietary P absorbed (0·85) was independent of Ca intake and hence of P retention. Increases in P retention were reflected by decreases in urinary P, but not in endogenous faecal excretion. Endogenous faecal excretion of P increased with D.M. or P intake from 17·9 at the lower to 33·5 mg/kg live weight/day at the higher intake. The results are discussed in relation to dietary allowances of Ca and the mechanism of P homoeostasis.

Abstract Niger (Guizotia abyssinica Cass.) is an important minor oil seed crop grown in dry areas grown mostly by tribal and interior places as life line of tribal segment. Tribal people mainly use its oil for cooking purpose, above than that there were also other uses. Hence, the niger crop should be protected from the infection. The crop is affected by number of fungal diseases. Therefore, a field experiment was formulated for three years with the four replications at the Niger Research Station (NRS) at Navsari Agricultural University (NAU), Vanarasi, Navsari (Gujarat) on the foliar diseases of GN-1 variety of niger crop. In this experiment, six different fungicides along with one control have been evaluated to control the Alternaria and Cercospora leaf spot diseases, out of which all the fungicidal treatments were significantly superior over the control. Here, foliar spray on the incidence of diseases was compared with the control (without any treatment). All the fungicidal treatments were significantly superior over the control to reduce Alternaria and Cercospora leaf spot diseases of Niger crop. Treatment of Carbendazim + Mancozeb (0.2 %) with two sprays first from the initiation of the disease and second after the interval of 15 days recorded the lowest incidence of Alternaria (14.56) and Cercospora (14.94) leaf spot diseases of niger and recorded the highest seed yield 337 seed yield kg/ha along with the net return with cost benefit ratio graph.

A field experiment was conducted during kharif, 2005 at Agricultural Research station, Devihosur, Haveri, Karnataka to assess the progress of powdery mildew at different time interval of sowing dates. Totally 20 different dates of sowings were imposed in the experiment at an interval of 10 days. The crop sown on last week of May to mid of June recorded minimum disease severity compared to rest of the date of sowings. This clearly indicated that crop sown during this period suffers less, which may be due to low inoculum potential, whereas late sown crop suffers more because of the readily available inoculum in the early sown crops. Low disease severity in last week of May to mid of June sowing may be attributed to the non-congenial weather factors for the development of the disease.
