Abstract Background Student engagement can predict successful learning outcomes and academic development. The expansion of simulation-based medical and healthcare education creates challenges for educators, as they must help students engage in a simulation-based learning environment. This research provides a reference for facilitators of simulation teaching and student learning in medical and health-related majors by providing a deep understanding of student engagement in a simulation-based learning environment. Methods We conducted semi-structured interviews with ten medical and healthcare students to explore their learning types and characteristics in a simulation-based learning environment. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Results The interviews were thematically analysed to identify three types of student engagement in the simulation-based learning environment: reflective engagement, performance engagement, and interactive engagement. The analysis also identified eight sub-themes: active, persistent, and focused thinking engagement; self-directed-learning thinking engagement with the purpose of problem solving; active “voice” in class; strong emotional experience and disclosure; demonstration of professional leadership; interaction with realistic learning situations; support from teammates; and collegial facilitator-student interaction. Conclusions The student interview and thematic analysis methods can be used to study the richness of student engagement in simulation-based learning environments. This study finds that student engagement in a simulation-based learning environment is different from that in a traditional environment, as it places greater emphasis on performance engagement, which combines both thinking and physical engagement, as well as on interactive engagement as generated through interpersonal interactions. Therefore, we suggest expanding the learning space centring around “inquiry”, as it can help strengthen reflective communication and dialogue. It also facilitates imagination, stimulates empathy, and builds an interprofessional learning community. In this way, medical and healthcare students can learn through the two-way transmission of information and cultivate and reshape interpersonal relationships to improve engagement in a simulation-based learning environment.

This chapter presents a study that investigated characteristics of the learning environment predicting for student engagement in public high school classrooms. Students in seven high school classrooms in five different subject areas were observed and videoed in order to predict their engagement as measured by the experience sampling method (ESM).

Abstract- The review was affected by fundamental issues about how to best convey the learning material of Sociology. Team-Based Learning is accepted as a method of learning that can develop critical thinking skills. Team-Based Learning emphasizes opportunities for students to develop the ability to cooperate because it gives greater weight to the discussion (peer discussion) compared to learning by lecture method. This study aimed to determine whether a lecture or Team Based Learning teaches the content material better, develops skills, such as critical thinking; and creates a learning environment that is fun in learning Sociology. Data collection techniques in this study were conducted thorugh the study of literature from books and the results of previous research. The results of this study concluded that Team Based Learning method can improve oral communication and critical thinking skills, and create a more pleasant learning environment than lecture method. Keywords: Effectiveness, Team-based learning, Sociology Abstrak.

In today’s complex world, the acquisition of research skills is considered an important goal in (upper secondary) education. Consequently, there is a growing body of literature that recognises the value of well-designed (online) learning environments for effectively supporting the development of this complex set of skills. However, a clear consensus on how these research skills can be facilitated is currently lacking. Furthermore, interventions aiming to foster these skills are often implemented in specific domains, mostly in physics, biology and chemistry. In addition, current approaches to facilitation often refer to only a few epistemic activities related to research skills. Because of the broad and (mainly) domain-specific character of research skills, the purpose of this paper is to articulate the instructional design considerations for an online learning environment for upper secondary school students’ (broad set of) research skills in a(n) (underrepresented) behavioural sciences context.

Aim: This survey study aimed to describe student and faculty experiences and perceptions regarding the sudden shift to delivery of online team-based learning (TBL) due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Method: Data such as perception of engagement and effectiveness of online TBL, challenges and recommendations for improving the online TBL experience were collected. Results: Eighteen (58.1%) faculty and 154 (75.9%) students completed the survey. Most students did not feel more engaged with their teammates or instructors using the online format and only one faculty member responded he/she felt more engaged with students via the online TBL format. Forty-one (26.7%) students responded they felt the online TBL improves knowledge retention, while no faculty responded they felt online TBL improved students’ knowledge retention. The top challenges described include lack of student engagement and technological difficulties. Conclusion: This study showed that a lack of training and preparation for the sudden online TBL transition led to decreased student motivation and engagement.

[Purpose] The paper aims to explore instructional design of the structure under the web-based environment, as well as the similarities and differences with the traditional instructional design; with its teaching resources, methods and students' ability to develop design strategies. [Method]Through the introduction of systems analysis and experimental control and from the network hardware environment, resources, environment and cultural environment the network learning environment design is brought forth. [Results]The results show that the network environment, information technology, instructional design, which are based on the learner and the teaching process for the study, aims to achieve a good learning environment, to organize the various elements; to form an ordered system; particularly to emphasis on learning characteristics and learning needs analysis of the measurement, to focus on the design of learning environments and “communication-oriented” classroom activities. [Conclusions] This instructional design under network information technology environment is a very important significance for a variety effective learning activities, for students to stimulate motivation to learn.
