A key problem in the field of quantum computing is understanding whether quantum machine learning (QML) models implemented on noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) machines can achieve quantum advantages. Recently, Huang et al. [Nat Commun 12, 2631] partially answered this question by the lens of quantum kernel learning. Namely, they exhibited that quantum kernels can learn specific datasets with lower generalization error over the optimal classical kernel methods. However, most of their results are established on the ideal setting and ignore the caveats of near-term quantum machines. To this end, a crucial open question is: does the power of quantum kernels still hold under the NISQ setting? In this study, we fill this knowledge gap by exploiting the power of quantum kernels when the quantum system noise and sample error are considered. Concretely, we first prove that the advantage of quantum kernels is vanished for large size of datasets, few number of measurements, and large system noise. With the aim of preserving the superiority of quantum kernels in the NISQ era, we further devise an effective method via indefinite kernel learning. Numerical simulations accord with our theoretical results. Our work provides theoretical guidance of exploring advanced quantum kernels to attain quantum advantages on NISQ devices.

AbstractMost solid-state materials are composed of p-block anions, only in recent years the introduction of hydride anions (1s2) in oxides (e.g., SrVO2H, BaTi(O,H)3) has allowed the discovery of various interesting properties. Here we exploit the large polarizability of hydride anions (H–) together with chalcogenide (Ch2–) anions to construct a family of antiperovskites with soft anionic sublattices. The M3HCh antiperovskites (M = Li, Na) adopt the ideal cubic structure except orthorhombic Na3HS, despite the large variation in sizes of M and Ch. This unconventional robustness of cubic phase mainly originates from the large size-flexibility of the H– anion. Theoretical and experimental studies reveal low migration barriers for Li+/Na+ transport and high ionic conductivity, possibly promoted by a soft phonon mode associated with the rotational motion of HM6 octahedra in their cubic forms. Aliovalent substitution to create vacancies has further enhanced ionic conductivities of this series of antiperovskites, resulting in Na2.9H(Se0.9I0.1) achieving a high conductivity of ~1 × 10–4 S/cm (100 °C).

Abstract Cu plating bath for high-speed electrodeposition of Cu pillar was designed in consideration of a flat top morphology of pillar and a pillar height uniformity. An ideal polarization curve was assumed for the flat top morphology. To obtain the ideal polarization curve, an effect of organic additive concentration and solution agitation on the polarization curve were investigated. The basic bath components were optimized considering a Wagner number to improve pillar height uniformity. To confirm the pillar top morphology and the pillar height uniformity, a 300 mm diameter wafer was plated with Cu at 20 A/dm2. As a result, improved pillar top morphology and pillar height uniformity were obtained. The optimized plating bath was applied to the plating of large-size panel of 415 × 510 mm.

Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is commonly thought of as occuring in the sick premature infant, usually in the first one to two weeks of life. A review of NEC at the Children's Hospital of Denver over a 5-year period, found that 13 of 79 infants (16.1%) had onset of NEC during the first day of life. These infants were larger (mean birth weight 2,624 ± 849 g), more mature (mean gestational age 37.9 ± 2.5 weeks), and less asphyxiated as judged by Apgar scores (mean five-minute score 8.15 ± 1.07) than infants with onset of NEC after the first day of life (mean birth weight 1,519 ± 586 g, mean gestational age 32.0 ± 3.5 weeks, P < .001, and mean five-minute Apgar score 6.81 ± 1.84, P < .05). Despite their large size and degree of maturity, eight of these infants (62%) showed signs of respiratory distress; four (31%) were polycythemic; four (31%) had either a partial or double-volume exchange transfusion performed; and 11 (85%) were fed prior to developing NEC. Presenting signs of disease, occurrence of sepsis (31%), requirement for surgical intervention (62%), and mortality (30%) were similar for the two groups of infants. It is suggested that term and near-term infants who have significant illness after delivery be treated more like their premature counterparts with cautious introduction of feedings after an adequate period of stabilization.

It is well known and immediate that in an associative ring a nilpotent one-sided ideal generates a nilpotent two-sided ideal. The corresponding open question for alternative rings was raised by M. Slater [6, p. 476]. Hitherto the question has been answered only in the case of a trivial one-sided ideal J (i.e., in case J2 = 0) [5]. In this note we solve the question in its entirety by showing that a nilpotent one-sided ideal K of an alternative ring generates a nilpotent two-sided ideal. In the process we find an upper bound for the index of nilpotency of the ideal generated. The main theorem provides another proof of the fact that a semiprime alternative ring contains no nilpotent one-sided ideals. Finally we note the analogous result for locally nilpotent one-sided ideals.

ABSTRACTSurface electronic structures of β-SiC reconstructed (001) surfaces and the Al/β-SiC(001) interface have been investigated by employing a tight-binding method. Distinct surface electronic characteristics corresponding to different surface reconstructions are discussed based on the interpretation of surface density of states. The calculations of the Al/β-SiC (001) interface indicate that aluminum deposition on β-SiC(001) surface may induce the substrate to return to the ideal unreconstructed surface and that Al-C interaction is stronger than Al-Si interaction. Al deposition on C-rich surfaces may form a better bonded interface than that on the Si-rich surfaces. Our findings are in good agreement with available experimental and theoretical results.

Congenital melanocytic nevi need surgical excisions. However, the effect of the size and location of the nevi on pain and emergence agitation have yet to be studied. The objective of this study was to evaluate (1) the ideal parameter of the nevus size and (2) the effects of the size and location of the nevus on pain and emergence agitation. This observational study enrolled 100 children scheduled for an excision of a nevus under sevoflurane anesthesia. The parameters of the nevus size included the long diameter, the area before resection, the area of resection, and the proportion (the area of resection/total body surface). The nevus locations included the trunk, face, scalp, and extremities. The proportion of the nevi was the most ideal parameter in evaluating the pain and emergence agitation. A large size showed a higher emergence agitation than a small size (median (range); 6 (0–20) in small groups vs. 12.5 (0–20) in large groups, p = 0.021). However, the pain was comparable. The nevus location did not influence pain or emergence agitation. In a multivariate regression analysis, a younger age and an extensive excision were associated with higher pain and emergence agitation. In conclusion, large nevi induced more severe emergence agitation. However, the nevus location did not affect the outcome. In addition, a younger age was associated with pain and emergence agitation. Clinicians need to consider the proportion of nevi when managing children undergoing a nevus excision.

In this paper, an entropy-regularized fuzzy clustering approach for non-Euclidean relational data and indefinite kernel data is developed that has not previously been discussed. It is important because relational data and kernel data are not always Euclidean and positive semi-definite, respectively. It is theoretically determined that an entropy-regularized approach for both non-Euclidean relational data and indefinite kernel data can be applied without using a β-spread transformation, and that two other options make the clustering results crisp for both data types. These results are in contrast to those from the standard approach. Numerical experiments are employed to verify the theoretical results, and the clustering accuracy of three entropy-regularized approaches for non-Euclidean relational data, and three for indefinite kernel data, is compared.

Bamboo-slip manuscripts from Zhoujiatai tomb 30, Hubei (burial dated ca. 209 b.c.e.), provide important evidence of ancient Chinese occult manuscripts belonging to a man of modest status. One manuscript, identified as a rishu “day book” by the modern editors of the Zhoujiatai manuscripts, treats of hemerology and astrology and is the focus of this study. The bamboo slips of a calendar for years corresponding to 211–210 b.c.e. can be associated with the rishu and may have formed one manuscript unit. The contents of the rishu include two large-size diagrams related to hemerological and astro-calendrical systems. The first diagram involves calculations based on the position of the handle of the Dipper constellation and the second diagram is notable for reference to one of the years (211 b.c.e.) of the associated calendar. A third diagram, for which the title rong liri “rong calendar day [divination]” is written on the manuscript, has a slightly different form in a second occurrence on the manuscript. Both forms of the diagram show thirty lines arranged in a vertical column, corresponding to the thirty days of the ideal month, with some lines enclosed in boxes. Days of the month are counted in the sequence of lines on the diagram in order to determine the lucky and unlucky aspects of a given day. A related hemerological system is attested in a manuscript from Mawangdui tomb 3, Hunan (burial dated 168 b.c.e.), and in medieval occult manuscripts from Dunhuang. 湖北省周家臺30號墓簡(約公元前209年)提供了關於古代中國一名低級官吏所擁有的數術簡的寶貴資料。本文主要研究其中由整理者认定为《日書》的簡文及其涉及的擇日、星象等內容。同墓出土的暦譜(公元前211–210年)與《日書》相關,可能本來屬於同一卷簡冊。《日書》包括兩幅大圖,一個與擇日有關,一個與星象曆法體系有關。第一圖講基於北斗七星斗柄指向的算法,第二圖因爲涉及到暦譜記載公元前211年的內容而受到矚目。另外第三幅圖簡文記述其名曰“戎磿日”,存在兩個稍微不同的版本。兩個版本的圖都是由縱向排列的三十條橫綫構成,代表一个月的理想天数三十,並和周圍的綫條組成方框。按照圖中橫綫的順序判斷每個月中相應的那一天是否吉利。與此相關的擇日法也在湖南馬王堆3號墓(約公元前168年)與中古時期敦煌的數術文獻中出現。
