Background and Objectives: Nearly one-half (46%) of physicians report at least one symptom of burnout. Family medicine residency program directors may have similar and potentially unique levels of burnout as well as resiliency. The primary aims of this study were to examine burnout and resiliency among family medicine residency directors and characterize associated factors. Methods: The questions used were part of a larger omnibus survey conducted by the Council of Academic Family Medicine (CAFM) Educational Research Alliance (CERA) in 2016. Program and director-specific characteristics were obtained. Symptoms of burnout were assessed using two single-item measures adapted from the full Maslach Burnout Inventory, and level of resiliency was assessed using the Brief Resilience Scale. Results: The overall response rate for the survey was 53.7% (245/465). Symptoms of high emotional exhaustion or high depersonalization were reported in 27.3% and 15.8% of program directors, respectively. More than two-thirds of program directors indicated that they associated themselves with characteristics of resiliency. Emotional exhaustion and depersonalization were significantly correlated with never having personal time, an unhealthy work-life balance, and the inability to stop thinking about work. The presence of financial stress was significantly correlated with higher levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization. In contrast, the level of resiliency reported was directly correlated with having a moderate to great amount of personal time, healthy work-life balance, and ability to stop thinking about work, and negatively correlated with the presence of financial stress. Conclusions: Levels of emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and resiliency are significantly related to personal characteristics of program directors rather than characteristics of their program.

Purpose This paper aims to attempt to explore the nature of relationship between work–life balance and emotional exhaustion experienced by the employed individuals while working from home during the pandemic COVID-19 induced nationwide lockdown in the Indian setting. Design/methodology/approach Data were collected from 180 working professionals in North India who were working from home during the lockdown. PROCESS macro developed for SPSS was used to test the hypotheses. Findings Findings depicted that in comparison to men, women felt more emotional exhaustion due to personal life interference in work during work from home period. Surprisingly, the relationship between work interference with personal life, and emotional exhaustion did not differ by gender. It was found that the participative leadership could contribute to reduction of work interference with personal life, and through such an influence, emotional exhaustion experienced by an employee could be reduced to some extent. Originality/value Many previous studies have explored the nature of the relationship between work–life balance and emotional exhaustion, but rarely any study could cover any Pandemic affected working scenario. This study attempted to investigate such a relationship when employees were obligated to mandatorily work from home during the countrywide lockdown.

Abstract — The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of employee engagement and burnout on the perception of work-life balance, particularly on blue-collar workers.  The study sample comprised of 91 employees of the production section (blue-collar workers) in a multinational company in Jababeka-Cikarang. Sampling was carried out using a stratified technique of proportional approach.  The instruments used in this study are The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS), and Work-Life Balance Scale. The study used primary data collection through survey method and secondary data from the company for analysis. Multiple regression analysis showed that employee engagement and burnout influence participants’ perceptions on work-life balance. The result indicates that employee engagement and burnout explained 17.6 percent on the variability of participants’ perceived work-life balance.Abstrak — Tujuan penelitian ini adalah mengetahui pengaruh employee engagement dan burnout terhadap work-life balance, terutama pada pekerja blue-collar. Sampel penelitian berjumlah 91 orang karyawan yang bekerja di bagian produksi (blue-collar workers) sebuah perusahaan multinasional di Jababeka-Cikarang. Pengambilan sampel dilakukan dengan menggunakan teknik stratified sampling dan pendekatan proposional. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk pengukuran employee engagement adalah Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES), Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI-GS), dan Work-Life Balance Scale. Data yang akan digunakan untuk analisis merupakan data primer yang diperoleh melalui metode survei dan data sekunder dari perusahaan. Hasil analisa regresi berganda menunjukkan adanya pengaruh yang positif antara employee engagement dan burnout terhadap work-life balance. Employee engagement dan burnout berkontribusi sebesar 17.6 persen terhadap varians skor persepsi work-life balance partisipan.

The object of the research is observing the effects of socio-demographic factors and work-life balance on employees’ emotional exhaustion. The sample of the research consists of 261 participants in retailing, education, service, industry and logistics sectors. In line with the theoretical background, proper methods that are hierarchical regression analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) are implemented. The contribution of the research to the existing literature is exploring the relationship between socio-demographic factors, work-life balance and burnout by carrying out the implementation in organizations. Findings of the research demonstrate that the predictor with the highest effect on emotional exhaustion is the variable named taking time for oneself. The predictor with the lowest effect is variable named life is just working. Briefly we can say, it could be argued that emotional exhaustion declines by .398 units should taking time for oneself increases 1 unit. Emotional exhaustion decreases by .223 units whether work-life accordance is changed by 1 unit. Emotional exhaustion drops .196 units should life is just working increases 1 unit. By contrast, when you change neglecting life 1 unit, emotional exhaustion decreases by .202 units. Should carrying work to home changes 1 unit, emotional exhaustion increases by .313 units. To sum up, regarding to marital status, monthly total income and sector; there are significant differences between the groups in the levels of emotional exhaustion of employees. It appears that there is no significant difference between other groups.

Purpose The increasing use of social media after work hours for work purposes, termed social media connectivity (SMC), is an emerging phenomenon in supply chain management. Although SMC can have debilitating effects on supply chain professionals and their organizations, research on its effects on work-related attitudes, especially turnover intentions, remains largely unexplored. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the influence of SMC on voluntary turnover of supply chain professionals and the resulting implications for them and their organizations. Design/methodology/approach The study draws from the conservation of resources theory and the concept of information overload to explain how SMC leads to emotional exhaustion and impacts turnover intentions of supply chain professionals, contingent on work–life balance. The model is tested using survey data (n=325) collected at multiple times from a large Chinese pharmaceutical manufacturer and distributor with spatially dispersed workforce and distribution facilities. Findings The results confirm that emotional exhaustion mediates the association between SMC and turnover intentions and that SMC exacerbates the intentions of supply chain professionals to quit their jobs. However, work–life balance is found to dampen the exhausting effects of SMC on emotional exhaustion thereby reducing its debilitating effects on turnover intentions of supply chain professionals. Originality/value The focus on SMC highlights the need for greater understanding of the dark side of social media on supply chain professionals and their organizations and how SMC can be better managed in an age of social media ubiquity.

Background: Burnout is a syndrome characterized by emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of personal accomplishment. The syndrome has been recognized as a pandemic among physicians. The demanding nature of neurosurgery makes neurosurgeons, particularly prone to burnout. In recent years, pioneering work has shed light on burnout in the field of neurosurgery. Methods: We have reviewed the literature in PUBMED on burnout in physicians, focusing on neurosurgical publications. Results: In this manuscript, we explore the topic of burnout in neurosurgery by reviewing definitions, magnitude, etiologies, sequelae, and mitigation strategies. Conclusion: Ongoing education, recognition, and targeted interventions for neurosurgeons at different career stages are needed to manage burnout proactively and ensure a resilient neurosurgery workforce.

The factors that influence employee job satisfaction are work-life balance and emotional exhaustion. Factors that can affect job satisfaction will affect employee job satisfaction. This study aimed to determine the influence of work-life balance on job satisfaction through emotional exhaustion. This research was conducted at Surabaya State University, with a total sample of 60 employees and used convenience sample techniques. Data collection uses surveys, interviews, and questionnaires. Data analysis techniques using PLS (Partial Least Square). The results of the study show that work-life balance has a positive effect on job satisfaction, while emotional exhaustion harms job satisfaction.
