scholarly journals Beyond the Words. Apollonio, Carol Dostoevsky’s Secrets. Reading Against the Grain. Review

Author(s):
Viktor S. Vainerman

Going “against the grain”, Carol Apollonio notices unusual and unexpected relations between characters, and by underlining the realism in Dostoevsky’s works, she relates them to real life. There is no work of Dostoevsky that could be able to stand up to criticism founded on strictly logical schemes, general rules, and writers’ “models”. Dostoevsky does everything wrong, differently from all the others. Carol Apollonio’s book marks the beginning of a new phase in research on Dostoevsky. She is like a small university whose main lesson is to teach its students systemic thinking and how to approach self-instruction systematically and without stereotypes. Carol Apollonio’s book shows once again how Dostoevsky, maybe more than any other writer in the world, does not tolerate fixed opinions nor research methods approved once and for all.

Based on personal accounts of their experiences conducting qualitative and quantitative research in the countries of the Middle East and North Africa, the contributors to this volume share the real-life obstacles they have encountered in applying research methods in practice and the possible solutions to overcome them. The volume is an important companion book to more standard methods books, which focus on the “how to” of methods but are often devoid of any real discussion of the practicalities, challenges, and common mistakes of fieldwork. The volume is divided into three parts, highlighting the challenges of (1) specific contexts, including conducting research in areas of violence; (2) a range of research methods, including interviewing, process-tracing, ethnography, experimental research, and the use of online media; and (3) the ethics of field research. In sharing their lessons learned, the contributors raise issues of concern to both junior and experienced researchers, particularly those of the Global South but also to those researching the Global North.

Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) have proven to be a powerful tool for solving a wide variety of real-life problems. The possibility of using them for forecasting phenomena occurring in nature, especially weather indicators, has been widely discussed. However, the various areas of the world differ in terms of their difficulty and ability in preparing accurate weather forecasts. Poland lies in a zone with a moderate transition climate, which is characterized by seasonality and the inflow of many types of air masses from different directions, which, combined with the compound terrain, causes climate variability and makes it difficult to accurately predict the weather. For this reason, it is necessary to adapt the model to the prediction of weather conditions and verify its effectiveness on real data. The principal aim of this study is to present the use of a regressive model based on a unidirectional multilayer neural network, also called a Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), to predict selected weather indicators for the city of Szczecin in Poland. The forecast of the model we implemented was effective in determining the daily parameters at 96% compliance with the actual measurements for the prediction of the minimum and maximum temperature for the next day and 83.27% for the prediction of atmospheric pressure.

The fascinating world of lichens draws the attention of the researchers because of the numerous properties of lichens used traditionally and, in modern times, as a raw material for medicines and in the perfumery industry, for food and spices, for fodder, as dyes, and for other various purposes all over the world. However, lichens being widespread symbiotic entities between fungi and photosynthetic partners may acquire toxic features due to either the fungi, algae, or cyano-procaryotes producing toxins. By this way, several common lichens acquire toxic features. In this survey, recent data about the ecology, phytogenetics, and biology of some lichens with respect to the associated toxin-producing cyanoprokaryotes in different habitats around the world are discussed. Special attention is paid to the common toxins, called microcystin and nodularin, produced mainly by the Nostoc species. The effective application of a series of modern research methods to approach the issue of lichen toxicity as contributed by the cyanophotobiont partner is emphasized.

Objective Atrial fibrillation (AF) may be triggered by intravenous bisphosphonates (IVBPs) such as zoledronic acid or pamidronic acid. Our objective was to confirm the association between AF and IVBPs in a real-life large pharmacovigilance database. Design A systematic analysis of VigiBase, the World Health Organization's pharmacovigilance database. Methods Analysis of adverse events reported as ‘atrial fibrillation’ (according to the Medical Dictionary for Drug Regulatory Activities) associated with the use of zoledronic acid or pamidronic acid, in VigiBase, the World Health Organization's global Individual Case Safety Report (ICSR) database. All ICSRs reporting AF associated with zoledronic acid or pamidronic acid were included in a disproportionality analysis determining the lower end of the 95% credibility interval for the information component (IC025), showing a statistical association when >0. Results 530 ICSRs reporting on the association between AF and IVBPs were extracted. Bayesian disproportionality analysis detected a significant association between AF and use of zoledronic acid (IC025 = 1.83) and pamidronic acid (IC025 = 2.16). Further analysis of these ICSRs determined that AF was severe in 85.0% of cases and with a mortality of 17.7%. The risk of severe AF was increased (OR: 2.98 (95% CI: 1.17–7.57), P = 0.02) following zoledronic acid vs pamidronic acid, after adjustment for age and gender. Conclusions This is the first VigiBase pharmacoepidemiological study confirming the association between IVBPs and AF. Most AF were severe, with a high frequency of lethal outcome. The risk of severe AF was increased following zoledronic acid use compared to pamidronic acid, advocating for a cautious use of IVBPs.

Every country in the world has sovereignty, especially over the security of its country, one of the things that can threaten the security of the country is the entry of foreigners whose activities are not according to the permits given to them, one of which is the misuse of residence permits by foreign investors in Indonesia. This study aims to explain in detail about the misuse of residence permits by a foreign investor in Indonesia and further discusses the legal supervision carried out by Immigration in dealing with irregularities committed by foreigners. This study uses a descriptive type with empirical normative research methods, where in finding data sourced from secondary data, namely through interviews, and secondary data obtained by conducting literature reviews such as laws and other regulations. At this writing it was found that the perpetrators took actions that were not in accordance with the purpose of giving a residence permit and did not carry out proper procedures to obtain a new Limited Stay Permit. From this research, it can be concluded that the supervision of foreigners must be tightened, one of which is the effective and efficient implementation of the Foreigner Supervision Team which is formed on the basis of synergy between related Ministries/Institutions in Indonesia.

Leaders are very important for organizations and businesses. The various characters of leaders can determine the success of an organization due to their role and responsibility for planning, organizing, and decision-making of organizational strategies to achieve their goals. One of the leaders whose characteristic is quite interesting and possibly become our role models is Larry Page, a co-founder of Google Inc. The researchers used qualitative research methods by descriptive research in explaining Larry Page style of leadership in leading Google Inc. Result of this study shows that Larry Page has a very open and equal way of leading, making him a democratic and transformational leader for an instance Larry believe in crazy ideas of their employees since he believes that insane ideas could change the world whereas not all the leaders can trust their subordinate. To hear the ideas, Larry always encourages his subordinate to speak up at every opportunity and instantly give them constructive feedback.

Everyone has a ‘story’. Many different events and experiences shape our lives. Just like a book, the stories inside people are fascinating! When people share these stories with others they become a ‘living book’. We have used ‘Human Libraries’ at William Clarke College in a new, innovative way. They provide our K-6 students with a wonderful opportunity to connect with diverse members of our school community and beyond, listen to their personal stories, communicate with them, build relationships, explore and learn. By participating in a ‘Human Library’ they acquire life skills, widening their understanding of others and the world. Students are hungry for real life experiences and ‘living books’ inspire them!
