We present a case of unilateral terminal transverse forearm deficiency with subterminal digit-like nubbins, identified in a fetus from a pregnancy terminated electively in the second trimester because the distal right arm and hand could not be seen by ultrasound and were presumed to be absent. Pathologic evaluation showed distal transverse shortening, tapering to a point in the mid-forearm. Five primitive digital nubbins were present, located just proximal to the tapered point. The arm vessels appeared normal histologically, and the amnion showed no evidence of intrauterine disruption. Histologic examination of the nubbins revealed osteocartilaginous tissue, never described previously within digital nubbins. This fetus has the rare phenotype of terminal transverse limb defects with residual nubbins, but differs in that the nubbins are not at the tip of the terminal transverse limb defect.

Abstract Adrenal tumors often present with clinical features that are specific and unique to their endocrine metabolism. When these features are in conflict with the pathologic appearance of the tumor, there can be great consternation for both the pathologist and the surgeon. In the case reported herein, an adrenalectomy was performed for clinical features of pheochromocytoma that on gross and histologic examination had the pathologic features of an adrenal cortical adenoma. Electron microscopy subsequently revealed that the tumor cells contained adrenalin-type granules, explaining the clinical outcome. It is crucial for both the surgeon and the surgical pathologist to be aware of this possibility when the clinical and pathologic features of an adrenal tumor are not congruent.

An adult Angus cow developed hyperthermia, prostration, and respiratory distress, dying 36 hours after the onset of clinical signs. The main finding during postmortem examination was a severe focally extensive pneumonia. Icterus and a chronic mastitis were also noticed. Histologic examination of the lungs detected fibrinonecrotic pneumonia, with large number of oat cells and intralesional Gram-negative bacterial colonies. Samples from lung lesions were collected, and a pure growth of Escherichia fergusonii was obtained. E. fergusonii is a member of Enterobacteriaceae, related to Escherichia coli and Salmonella sp. In veterinary medicine, E. fergusonii has been reported in calves and sheep with clinical cases suggestive of salmonellosis; in a horse and a goat with enteritis and septicemia; and in ostriches with fibrinonecrotic typhlitis. To our knowledge, this report represents the first description of E. fergusonii associated with an acute pneumonia in cattle.

Abstract Background: Hematidrosis is an extremely rare and mysterious disorder. The etiology and pathophysiology of this disorder remain mostly unknown, and there is no specific therapeutic strategy available up to now. Methods: The clinical features, hemostatic and other laboratory tests, and bloody exudates of seven patients were investigated, and histologic examination of the affected skin was performed. They were treated with a new therapeutic regimen. Results: The bleeding episodes could appear under different conditions, but often following physical or emotional stress, with some prodromes. The frequency and amount of bleeding varied with each individual. The effluent bloody samples showed all the components of the peripheral blood, mingled with a few epithelial cells. Histologic examination of the affected skin showed normal sweat glands containing no blood. Each of patients was treated individually, and a multi-drug "cocktail therapy" regimen mainly consisting of beta-receptor blocker, anxiolytic, and histamine H1/H2 receptor antagonists proved successful. Although most patients could relapse within 6 to 12 months, the treatment was still effective and they were finally cured. Conclusion: nervous system-hypothalamus-autonomic nervous system pathway in association with histaminergic activation. A multi-drug "cocktail therapy" in accordance to this hypothesis would become a new effective regimen.

AbstractObjective: The purpose of our study was to determine the level of correlation between histopathologic results after surgery for chronic apical periodontitis and the radiographic and clinical diagnosis. The status of gold standard technique of histologic examination was evaluated in the diagnosis of apical radiolucency in necrotic teeth. Methods: Out of 154 patients with incorrect root fillings and apical radiolucency included in an endodontic retreatment protocol, 87 patients (108 teeth) were scheduled for apical surgery at 3-6 months control recall. Clinical and radiographic exams were completed prior to surgery and compared to the histological results of apical biopsies. The collected data were statistically analyzed with the SPSS version 20.0 and the Chi-square test was used to determine the associations between clinical and histologic diagnosis. A value of p <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: There was a statistically significant difference between the number of cases diagnosed as granulomas or cysts during clinical and radiological evaluation compared to histologic evaluation of tissue samples, with 40.9% to 75.9% and 54.2% to 16.8% respectively (p<0.05).Conclusions: The final diagnosis was obtained only after histologic examination of apical tissue samples, which means that the observations made based on radiologic investigations must be confirmed by biopsy.

Sixty-four canine cutaneous round cell tumors were divided into 25 mast cell tumors, 15 histiocytomas, nine cutaneous lymphosarcomas and 15 transmissible venereal tumors. The final diagnosis was made from cytologic, clinical and histologic findings. Cytologic features were significantly distinctive in mast cell tumor, transmissible venereal tumor, and most cases of histiocytoma and lymphosarcoma to allow a diagnostic opinion. This opinion was supported by subsequent histologic examination. In some instances cytology was considered essential in rendering a diagnostic opinion even though histology was available.
