The effectiveness of the cadaver-based educational seminar for trauma surgery (C-BEST) for residents

To assess the effectiveness of the cadaver-based educational seminar for trauma surgery (C-BEST) for residents using a 10-point self-assessment of confidence levels (SACL) survey. We collected data, including SACL for 21 surgical skills and an evaluation of the contents before, immediately after, and half a year after the seminar, from 42 seminars conducted between January 2013 and March 2019. On comparing SACL results from evaluations at the three time points using statistical analysis, a p value of <0.05 was obtained. We enrolled 412 participants; of the 52 residents, 47 respondents were included in the study. Improvements in all skills were observed on comparing SACL before and immediately after the seminar (2.2 ± 2.6 vs. 5.3 ± 2.5; p < 0.001), but a decrease was observed between immediately after and half a year after the seminar (5.3 ± 2.5 vs. 4.9± 2.7; p < 0.01). Upon examining the results according to each skill, SACL did not decrease between immediately after and half a year after the seminar (p > 0.05). The most performed procedure was left anterior thoracotomy and aortic clamp (n = 13), and the number of residents majoring in surgery increased from 27 to 32 half a year after the seminar. C-BEST boosts more self-confidence of the participating residents immediately after the seminar. Although this effect is not maintained half a year after the seminar, many participants practiced their skills after the seminar. Therefore, C-BEST is useful for residents with little surgical experience; this may also inspire the residents to major in surgery.

Although the effectiveness of cadaver surgical training has been clarified, the decline in training effects over time has become a problem. This study examined whether repeated participation in cadaver-based educational seminar for trauma surgery (C-BEST) could suppress the decline in training effects. Basic and advanced C-BEST have pelvic package (PP) and fasciotomy of the lower extremity (FLE) as common training skills. For participants of these skills twice each, we examined the changes in a 10-point self-assessment of confidence levels (SACL) at six time points: (1) before the seminar of basic C-BEST, (2) immediately after basic C-BEST, (3) half a year after basic C-BEST, (4) before advanced C-BEST, (5) immediately after advanced C-BEST, and (6) half a year after advanced C-BEST. Data were collected from 28 basic C-BESTs and 5 advanced C-BESTs conducted from January 2013 to January 2020. Statistical analysis was performed by comparing SACL results from seminar evaluations at the six points, with significance at P < 0.05. A total of 60 participants were enrolled (postgraduate year, 16.5 ± 5.7). The interval between basic and advanced C-BEST was 27.1 ± 6.9 months. In PP, the SACL did not decrease at all six points. In FLE, SACL did not decrease at all six points, had a greater increase before versus immediately after advanced C-BEST, and did not decrease thereafter (P < 0.05). After participants retook the seminar, FLE-like procedures, which are unfamiliar to nonorthopedic surgeons, had increased and maintained self-evaluation values, whereas PP-like procedures, which are familiar to abdominal surgeons, had maintained high self-evaluation values. Therefore, repeated seminar participation could maintain the effects of cadaver training.

Research  background  and  hypothesis.  Previous  research  has  proved  that  children  engaged  in  sports  easier integrate into the society and their psychological well-being is much higher,  sports activities can help them resist to the harmful influence of their peers and prevent them from engaging into delinquent behavior. However, there still is a lack of a studies providing evidence about factors that determine the expression of compulsion. Hypothesis: The level of self-esteem and self-confidence of adolescent athletes influences the occurrence of bullying and the initiation of it.  Research  aim  was  to  disclose  the  relationship  between  the  level  of  adolescent  athletes’  self-esteem,  self-confidence and the occurrence of bullying.Research methods. The study applied I. Shostrom’s modified self-esteem scale questionnaire and the adapted Bullying Scale for Schoolchildren. Research  results.  Results  showed  a  weak  correlation  between  bullying  and  self-esteem  levels  (γ =  0.24; p > 0.05). We found a weak adverse relationship between initiating bullying and self-assessment levels (γ = –0.16; p > 0.05), weak adverse correlation between experienced bullying and self-confidence levels (γ = –0.15; p > 0.05) and a weak linear relationship between initiating bullying and self-confidence (γ = 0.20; p > 0.05).Discussion and conclusions. Contrary to what we expected, we observed that athlete adolescents with the high levels of self-esteem suffered from bullying sometimes and often. Research findings suggest that adolescents who tend to initiate bullying demonstrated moderate and low levels of self-esteem. Most of athlete adolescents admitted that that did not initiate bullying or if they did, that was done only occasionally. It was found that adolescents with high and moderate self-confidence levels experienced bullying occasionally or not at all. Some athletes with low self-confidence levels professed that they suffered from bullying more often, and they also admitted that they often initiated bullying themselves. In our research we were unable failed to provide evidence which would prove that sports activities impacted or influenced adolescents’ bullying initiatives or experiences; therefore further research is needed to determine whether self-esteem and other internal personality qualities could affect the expression of bullying among non-athlete adolescents.Keywords: aggression, adolescents’ self- assessment, self-confidence.

Salah satu aspek  yang perlu diperhatikan pada siswa sekolah  adalah percaya diri (self confidence), percaya diri merupakan salah satu modal dalam kehidupan yang harus ditumbuhkan pada  setiap siswa agar mereka dapat menjadi manusia yang bisa mengontrol berbagai aspek yang ada pada dirinya.masalah fisik, obesitas dan kurangnya berat badan, keterlambatan dalam menerima pelajaran dikelas, yang mengakibatkan seorang anak kurang percaya diri. salah satu metodenya yaitu dengan memberikan gerakan senam hook ups.  Adapun tujuan penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui pengaruh penerapan senam hook ups terhadap peningkatan percaya diri anak kelas dua. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah eksperimen semu atau quasy eksperimen tanpa kelompok pembanding (one group pretest and post test), dengan jumlah sampel sebanyak 35 siswa/i kelas dua MIN Guwa Kidul. Pengumpulan data selama satu bulan untuk pre test dilakukan dengan responden mengisi kuisioner sebelum intervensi,  post test  dilakukan pengumpulan data pada minggu ke empat . Uji statistik dengan Uji Paired t – test dengan nilai t- post test 85.636 dan p Value 0.000.Hasil uji statistik didapatkan bahwa  ada perbedaan tingkat percaya diri sebelum dan sesudah dilakukan senam Hook Ups dengan nilai mean 0,32 dan menunjukkan ada peningkatan tingkat percaya diri setelah dilakukan senam Hook Ups ( p value 0,000).Kata Kunci          : senam Hook Ups, tingkat percaya diri.ABSTRACTOne aspect to note is the school student confidence (self-confidence), self-confidence is one of the capital in a life that must be grown on each student so that they can be a man who can control every aspect of the physical dirinya.masalah, obesity and lack of weight gain, delays in receiving lessons in class, which resulted in a child's lack of confidence. one method is to provide the hook ups gymnastics movement. The collection of data for a month to pre-test conducted with respondents fill out questionnaires before the intervention, post-test data collection at week four. Test statistics with the Paired t- test, post test  85.636 and p Value 0.000.Statistical test results showed that there are differences in confidence levels before and after exercise Hook Ups with a mean of 0.32 and showed no increase in confidence levels after exercise Hook Ups (p value 0.000).Keywords             : gymnastics Hook Ups, confidence level.

Lipids are molecules involved in metabolism and inflammation. This study investigates the plasma lipidome for markers of severity and nutritional status in critically ill children. Children with multi-organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS) (n = 24) are analyzed at three time-points and cross-referenced to sedation controls (n = 4) for a total of N = 28. Eight of the patients with MODS, needed veno-arterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VA ECMO) support to survive. Blood plasma lipid profiles are quantified by nano-electrospray (nESI), direct infusion high resolution/accurate mass spectrometry (MS), and tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), and compared to nutritional profiles and pediatric logistic organ dysfunction (PELOD) scores. Our results show that PELOD scores were not significantly different between MODS and ECMO cases across time-points (p = 0.66). Lipid profiling provides stratification between sedation controls and all MODS patients for total lysophosphatidylserine (lysoPS) (p-value = 0.004), total phosphatidylserine (PS) (p-value = 0.015), and total ether-linked phosphatidylethanolamine (ether-PE) (p-value = 0.03) after adjusting for sex and age. Nutrition intake over time did not correlate with changes in lipid profiles, as measured by caloric and protein intake. Lipid measurement in the intensive care environment shows dynamic changes over an 8-day pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) course, suggesting novel metabolic indicators for defining critically ill children.

For reliable blood pressure measurement, various potential sources of inaccuracies need to be considered to avoid incorrect decision-making. Pharmacy students should be sensitized and taught the skill accordingly. One strategy to teach students’ blood pressure measurement skills might be through a blended learning approach in a flipped classroom-like setting. With a randomized two-arm study among pharmacy students in their eighth semester, the required extent of in-class session in the scope of a blended learning approach in a flipped classroom-like setting was evaluated. Participants’ self-confidence and self-perceived proficiency were evaluated through a survey, and participants’ blood pressure measurement performance was assessed by objective structured clinical examination (OSCE). Participants’ satisfaction with, and perception of, the flipped classroom were also surveyed. The extended in-class activities did not result in a significantly higher increase of participants’ OSCE score and self-assessment score when compared to the brief in-class session. Both in-class sessions yielded a significant increase in the OSCE scores as well as in the self-assessment scores. Moreover, the teaching approaches were predominantly well-received by the students. The use of both flipped classroom-like approaches improved pharmacy students’ blood pressure measurement performance, though the brief in-class session was sufficient. Students’ self-confidence/self-perceived proficiency in blood pressure measurement skills increased similarly in both settings.

Abstract Objective To evaluate factors associated with anxiety and the effect of simulation-based training (SBT) on student anxiety, self-confidence and learning satisfaction in relation to pelvic and breast examination. Methods A longitudinal study was conducted with 4th year medical students at the Universidade José do Rosário Vellano. A 12-item, self-report questionnaire on student anxiety at performing gynecological examinations was applied before and after SBT, with answers being given on a Likert-type scale. After training, the self-confidence levels and satisfaction of the students related to the learning process were also evaluated. Results Eighty students with a mean age of 24.1 ± 4.2 years were included in the study. Of these, 62.5% were women. Pre-SBT evaluation showed that students were more anxious at performing a pelvic examination than a breast examination (2.4 ± 1.0 versus 1.7 ± 0.8, respectively; p < 0.001). The primary reason for anxiety regarding both pelvic and breast examination was fear of hurting the patient. SBT significantly reduced student anxiety (2.0 ± 0.8 versus 1.5 ± 0.5, respectively; p < 0.001). The satisfaction and self-confidence of the students were found to be high (6.8 ± 0.3 and 6.0 ± 0.9, respectively), with no difference between genders. Conclusion The use of SBT in teaching students to perform pelvic and breast examinations resulted in reduced anxiety and increased self-confidence in a group of medical students of both genders, with high levels of satisfaction in relation to the training.

Male and female subjects (N = 80), ranging in age from 17 to 25 years, participated in a study designed to determine if the sex of the sex of the subject, the sex of the subject's opponent, or the perceived ability of the subject's opponent, (good vs. poor ability) affected subjects' self confidence after competing at a task (TV Pong Game) of “neutral” sex orientation. a 2 x 2 x 2 mixed factorial design, with 10 subjects assigned to each cell, was used. All subjects competed in five games against a confederate and in all cases subjects lost all but the second of the five games. Data were treated using an ANCOVA, with preperformance confidence being used as the covariate. Ragardless of sex of the opponent, females expressed postperformance confidence levels equal to males after performing against an opponent thought to be poor in ability, but they were significantly less cofident after performing against opponents perceived to be good in ability. These findings are consistent with those of Argote, Fisher, McDonald, and O'Neal (1976), who note that the performance expectations of females tend to be unstable and change with single encounters, whereas males are less likely to allow one failure to affect performance assessments.

Objectives The biologic variability of N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and its impact on diagnostic utility is unknown in healthy cats and those with cardiac disease. The purpose of this study was to determine the biologic variation of NT-proBNP within-day and week-to-week in healthy adult cats. Methods Adult cats were prospectively evaluated by complete blood count (CBC), biochemistry, total thyroxine, echocardiography, electrocardiography and blood pressure, to exclude underlying systemic or cardiac disease. Adult healthy cats were enrolled and blood samples were obtained at 11 time points over a 6 week period (0, 2 h, 4 h, 6 h, 8 h, 10 h and at weeks 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6). The intra-individual (coefficient of variation [CVI]) biologic variation along with index of individuality and reference change values (RCVs) were calculated. Univariate models were analyzed and included comparison of the six different time points for both daily and weekly samples. This was followed by a Tukey’s post-hoc adjustment, with a P value of <0.05 being significant. Results The median daily and weekly CVI for the population were 13.1% (range 0–28.7%) and 21.2% (range 3.9–68.1%), respectively. The index of individuality was 0.99 and 1 for daily and weekly samples, respectively. The median daily and weekly RCVs for the population were 39.8% (range 17.0–80.5%) and 60.5% (range 20.1–187.8%), respectively. Conclusions and relevance This study demonstrates high individual variability for NT-proBNP concentrations in a population of adult healthy cats. Further research is warranted to evaluate NT-proBNP variability, particularly how serial measurements of NT-proBNP may be used in the diagnosis and management of cats with cardiac disease.

Background: Studies estimating the Tobacco- specific nitrosamines, (TSNA’s) which are the strongest carcinogens in the saliva oftobacco users and tobacco quitters, are limited.Objectives: To assess and compare the levels of N- nitrosamines (NNN, NNK) in the saliva of tobacco chewers and non -chewers including those who have quit the habit of tobacco use.Methods: The study included 120 patients who were divided into three groups of 40 each: Group I- Smokeless tobacco chewersGroup II- Tobacco chewers who have completely stopped the habit at least 2 weeks prior to sample collection andGroup III- non-chewers. The salivary levels of two tobacco specific nitrosamines; NNN & NNK levels were estimated in the three study groups. Statistical analysis was done by Kruskal– Wallis, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) test, Mann-Whitney U test. (p-value < 0.05 was considered to be statistically significant)Results: In Group I, the mean level of NNN was 651.84 ± 359.78 and mean level of NNK was 168.32 ± 131.83. In Group II, the mean level of NNN was 119.52 ± 95.05 and mean level of NNK was 42.78 ± 43.19. In Group III, the mean level of NNN was 3.44 ±6.55 and mean level of NNK was 1.98 ± 3.68. There was a statistical difference in the 3 groups with respect to mean levels of NNN and NNK.Conclusion: The study indicated that salivary tobacco-specific nitrosamines are elevated in tobacco chewers. Saliva can be used to detect TSNA’s and screen for TSNA’s during each patient’s de-addiction process.

Self-confidence level assessment in newly graduated students is very important to evaluate the undergraduate endodontic courses. Objective: The aim of this study was to get information from internship dentists in Alfarabi dental college related to their confidence levels during root canal treatment procedures.Methods: Anonymous survey forms were sent to 150 internship dentists in Alfarbi dental college. They were asked to indicate their self-confidence level by Lickert’s scoring system ranging between 1 and 5.Results: Removal of broken instruments was determined as a procedure that was not experienced by 25.2% of the dentists. (44.6%) of dentists felt confident about taking radiographs during root canal treatment. 1.9 % of them reported as having very little confidence during retreatment. The irrigation was a procedure in which they felt very confident about (59.2%).Conclusion: The non-practiced endodontic procedure was clearly related to levels of self confidence among internship dentists; this means; a lot of studies in dental school should be performed to determine the weakness points or gaps in undergraduate endodontic courses.
