This study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of isolated compounds and semisynthetic derivatives from Miconia ferruginata (Melastomataceae) against five microorganisms: Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Bacillus subtilis (ATCC 6623), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 15442), and Candida albicans (ATCC 10231). The isomeric mixture of ursolic and oleanolic acids was active against S. aureus (MIC = 250 μg mL-1) and against E. coli, B. subtilis, and P. aeruginosa (MIC = 500 μg mL-1). The flavone 5,6,7-trihydroxy-4’-methoxyflavone and the methyl esters, semisynthetic derivatives of a mixture of ursolic and oleanolic acids, showed no activity against the tested microorganisms. These results suggest that the carboxyl group present in the triterpenes may contribute to antimicrobial activity.

A new series of hydrazinecarbothioamides 6-9 bearing 5H-dibenzo[a,d][7]annulene moiety were synthesized. Cyclization of 6-9 in NaOH solution produced the corresponding 1,2,4-triazoles-3(4H)-thiol 10-13, which proved to be axial isomers. The thioethers 14-17 were prepared by alkylation of 10-13 with methyl iodide. All new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, IR-, UV-, 1H-NMR and 13C-NMR spectroscopy. The evaluation for antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922, Bacillus subtilis ATCC 6663, Salmonella tiphimurium ATCC 14028, Shigella flexneri ATCC 12022, Candida albicans ATCC 90028 was performed.

Increased problems associated with side effects and bacterial resistance of chemical drugs has prompted the research focus on herbal medicines in the past few decades. In the present investigation, the antimicrobial activity of the various parts of Avicennia marina (AM), a mangrove plant, has been evaluated. The plants were collected from the Jazan area of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Primary extracts of roots, stem, leaves, fruits, and seeds were made in ethanol and fractioned in ethanol, ethyl acetate, petroleum ether, chloroform, and water. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) of the extracts were determined against Bacillussubtilis, Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. It has been observed that the chloroform extract of roots of the AM exhibited inhibitory effects against both S. aureus (MIC = 1.5 ± 0.03 mg/mL) and E. coli (MIC = 1.7 ± 0.01 mg/mL). The ethanolic extract of the AM roots has shown antibacterial activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MIC = 10.8 ± 0.78 mg/mL), Bacillussubtilis (MIC = 6.1 ± 0.27 mg/mL), Staphylococcus aureus (MIC = 2.3 ± 0.08 mg/mL), and Escherichia coli (MIC = 6.3 ± 0.28 mg/mL). The leaf extract of the AM in ethyl acetate showed antibacterial activity against S. aureus and E. coli. Antifungal activity of these extracts was also investigated against Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans. Ethanolic extract of roots and seeds of the AM has shown antifungal activity against Aspergillus fumigatus when applied individually. Ethanolic extract of the AM fruits has shown an inhibitory effect on the growth of Aspergillus fumigatus and Candida albicans. It is suggested that the plant extracts of AM have tremendous antimicrobial activity against a group of microbes, and this effect depends on both the plant part and the solvent used for extraction. Therefore, this plant can be considered to treat various diseases caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Av Canadá 1470, San Borja Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional de Ingeniería. Av. ABSTRACT Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles have been synthesized using gamma irradiation or ultrasound. The antimicrobial activity of CuO nanoparticles was determined by excavation method in plate culture in three microbial strains: Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853. The initial bacterial concentration was 1x107 CFU / mL and seeded onto Muller Hinton Agar and incubated at 37 °C for 24 h. The CuO nanoparticles obtained by ultrasound are nanospheres with a higher antimicrobial activity for S. aureus than for E. coli and no activity against P. aeruginosa, while CuO nanoparticles obtained by gamma irradiation with a dose of 8 kGy have antimicrobial activity similar to S. aureus and E. coli and those obtained at doses of 15 and 25 kGy only have antimicrobial activity against E. coli. Keywords: Nanoparticles, antimicrobial activity, sonochemistry, gamma radiation.

The aim of the work. 1,2,4-triazole derivatives possess a wide range of pharmacological activity, so they are used for the development of drugs and active pharmaceutical ingredients. Due to the reactivity of 1,2,4-triazoles there are many options for their further structural modification on different reaction centers. Therefore, the aim of the work was to obtain new S-substituted derivatives of 1,2,4-triazole-3-thiols, study physicochemical parameters of the substances synthesized, evaluate the antimicrobial activity of new S-derivatives of the 4-R1-5-((3-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)thio)methyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiol series, and study some regularities of the “structure – biological activity” relationship for the synthesized compounds as well. Materials and methods. The subject of the study was new S-substituted 1,2,4-triazoles containing 2-oxopropan-1-yl and 2-aryl-2-oxoethan-1-yl substituents. The antimicrobial activity was studied by double serial dilutions on test cultures of Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853), and Candida albicans (ATCC 885-653). The results of the biological screening showed that at a concentration of 125 g/mL, all synthesized substances showed activity (MIC – in the range of 31.25 - 62.5 μg/mL, MBCK - in the range of 62.5–125 μg/mL) against strains of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida albicans. Variation of substituents on the sulfur atom did not lead to a significant change in antimicrobial and antifungal activities among derivatives of 4-R1-5-((3-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazole-5-yl) thio)methyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazole-3-thiols. Conclusions. Biological screening data indicate the prospects for the search for new antimicrobial substances among the abovementioned derivatives of 1,2,4-triazoles. The most active compounds were 1-((4-ethyl-5-((3-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)thio)methyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio)propan-2-one and 1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-2-(4-ethyl-5-(((3-(pyridin-4-yl)-1H)-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)thio)methyl)-4H-1,2,4-triazol-3-yl)thio)ethanone, which showed the most pronounced antimicrobial activity against the Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain (MIC – 31.25 μg/mL, MBcK - 62.5 μg/mL)

The eco-friendly functionalized TiO2/polymer antifouling (AF) coating was successfully synthesized by dispersing TiO2 nanoparticles in waterborne epoxy-modified tung oil resin. The AF effectiveness of coating was evaluated toward Staphylococcus aureus ( S. aureus, ATCC6538), Escherichia coli ( E. coli, ATCC8739) and diatom ( Cyclotella sp., FACHB-1635). The nanoTiO2/polymer AF coating showed good antimicrobial activity both under the light and dark conditions by comparison with the pristine TiO2 nanoparticles and bulk polymer. Under light irradiation for 50 min, the AF coating showed only 8.4% and 8% survival rate for S. aureus and E. coli. In addition, The AF coatings exhibited favorable inhibition efficacy toward the growth and adhesion of Cyclotella sp., and the efficacy was enhanced with the increase of TiO2 content. It can be concluded that TiO2 nanoparticles endow the AF coatings with promoted fouling resistance properties.
