Millet is the basic cereal crop which contributes to rural households’ food security in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso. This study assesses the technical efficiency and its determinants of millet farmers in this region. A stochastic frontier approach is followed to analyze data collected on 106 households randomly selected in 2017. The mean technical efficiency is estimated at 71.23% implying that millet production may be increased by 28.77% with the same resources used by farmers. The results show that formal education, off farm income, breeding, and access to credit are the main factors affecting the production efficiency. The study recommends decisions makers to take appropriate measures regarding these factors, to enhance millet productivity in the Sahel region.

This study examines how small maize farmers allocate their production inputs and identifies the elements that characterize efficient farms. A Cobb Douglas stochastic frontier approach is used to estimate farm level technical efficiency of maize farmers. Average technical efficiency of sampled farms was estimated to be 65.40% with a minimum of 20.47% and a maximum of 93.46%. The study further showed that the farmers’ sex, the use of improved seeds, the maize selling price, the non-farm income, the contact with an NGO, the access to credit and the production area played a positive and significant role in improving technical efficiency. The results imply that government can save resources used in extension services and focus on its improved seed distribution policy. Also, imperfections in the labor/capital market contribute to the low efficiency of farm households.

The objective of this study is to determine technical efficiency and factors affecting technical inefficiency of strawberry farming in Purbalingga Regency. This study was conducted in Karangreja Subdistrict, Purbalingga Regency, Central Java Province. Purposive sampling method was utilized to select 100 farmers as the respondents. All of whom have been running their farm business for at least three years consecutively from 2015 to 2017. Stochastic frontier production function was applied to measure technical efficiency and factors affecting technical inefficiency. The findings show that strawberry farming in Purbalingga Regency, Central Java Province, is technically efficient with efficiency number varies between 26.50-99.40% and the average efficiency number of 77.80%. Furthermore, the results indicate that the farmers’ formal education and the number of household members significantly affect the technical efficiency of strawberry farming.

<em><span>Domestic rice needs will continue to increase, it is estimated that national rice needs in 2035 will reach 36 million tons. Meanwhile, national rice production capacity is experiencing slow growth or tends to be stagnant. So that it needs an increase in productivity or technical efficiency through the Integrated Crop Management</span><span lang="IN"> (ICM)</span><span> model approach. This study aims to analyze the level of rice ICM technology implementationand the factors that influence the level of rice ICM technology implementation and its effect on the technical efficiency of rice farming in Bogor Regency. Determination of the sample using purposive sampling method, a sample of 60 farmers in the District of Cariu, Pamijahan, and Leuwisadeng </span><span lang="IN">of </span><span>Bogor Regency were analyzed using the scoring method, multiple linear regression models, and the stochastic frontier analyze method. The results showed the level of rice ICM technology implementation in Bogor Regency was classified as moderate (71</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>54 percent), while the technology component with the highest level of application was jajar legowo spacing of 2:1 (98</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>50 percent) and the lowest was the use of manure (27 percent). Factors that influence the level of rice ICM technology implementation at α level of 5 percent are non-farm income with an estimated value of 3</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>318, intensity of SLPTT and non SLPTT training with an estimated value of 2</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>236, and dummy farmer's employment status with an estimated value of 2</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>127. While the experience factor of farming with an estimated value of 0</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>110 and the duration of formal education of farmers with an estimated value of 0</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>403 has an effect on the level of α of 10 percent. </span><span lang="IN">T</span><span>he level of rice ICM technology implementation with an estimated value of -0</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>0855 and farmer access to obtain credit with an estimated value of -0</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>0348 has an effect on the technical efficiency of rice farming at α level of 1 percent, while the land ownership status with an estimated value is -0</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>2527 at α level of 10 percent. The average level of technical efficiency of rice farming in Bogor Regency is not optimal (67</span><span lang="IN">,</span><span>4 percent), this is due to, among others, the application of technological components that are still relatively low or not as recommended by </span><span lang="IN">ICM</span><span>. Therefore, efforts are needed to increase motivation and farmer participation in implementing </span><span lang="IN">ICM</span><span> technology optimally and sustainably to help meet national rice needs.</span></em>

This study analyzes the technical efficiency and production risk of 862 maize farmers in major maize producing regions of Ethiopia. It employs the stochastic frontier approach (SFA) to estimate the level of technical efficiencies of stallholder farmers. The stochastic frontier approach (SFA) uses flexible risk properties to account for production risk. Thus, maize production variability is assessed from two perspectives, the production risk and the technical efficiency. The study also attempts to determine the socio-economic and farm characteristics that influence technical efficiency of maize production in the study area. The findings of the study showed the existence of both production risk and technical inefficiency in maize production process. Input variables (amounts per hectare) such as fertilizer and labor positively influence maize output. The findings also show that farms in the study area exhibit decreasing returns to scale. Fertilizer and ox plough days reduce output risk while labor and improved seed increase output risk. The mean technical efficiency for maize farms is 48 percent. This study concludes that production risk and technical inefficiency prevents the maize farmers from realizing their frontier output. The best factors that improve the efficiency of the maize farmers in the study area include: frequency of extension contact, access to credit and use of intercropping. It was also realized that altitude and terracing in maize farms had influence on farmer efficiency.

The study assessed the effect of contract farming on broiler production in Osun State, Nigeria. 120 farmers comprising of broiler farmers participating and not participating in contract farming were selected using multistage sampling technique. Information was elicited from the farmers with the aid of a structured questionnaire. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Stochastic Production Frontier and Ordinary least square regression model. The findings of this study revealed that majority (75%) of the farmers rated the activities of contracting farming to be good and favorable, as the contract farmers earn more from broiler production than their counterparts. Average technical efficiency of the contract and non contract farmers were 0.8209 and 0.6803, respectively. The results also revealed that years of experience in broiler production, education of farmer, off-farm income, membership in farmers association, access to credit, access to veterinary services and participation in contract farming significantly affected technical efficiency of broiler farmers in the study area. Therefore, the study recommends that there should be increase in the awareness of the benefits associated with contract farming in agrarian communities, so that more farmers are encouraged to participate, as this will improve their production efficiency.

Shallot has the highest production value in Indonesia. High production value indicates that shallot is an important commodity, therefore, its potential must be improved. Technical efficiency analysis can be used to measure production efficiency and possible input reduction to maximize the production potential of shallot. The chosen location for this research is Torongrejo Village Batu City, East Java. Shallot productivity value of Batu City is comparable to other central shallot production areas in East Java. The purpose of this research is to understand the farming system and production efficiency of shallot alongside with socio-economics factors affecting its efficiency level. Research method used in this research consists of: profitability analysis of shallot farming, analysis using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) to analyze the technical efficiency of shallot production, and Tobit regression to analyze socio-economics factors affecting technical efficiency level. The results from the analyses shows that shallot farming in Torongrejo Village has the R/C ratio of 2,09, with the DEA-CRS technical qfficiency value of 87,7 percent, DEA-VRS technical efficiency value of 99 percent and scale efficiency value of 88,6 percent. The result from Tobit regression using DEA-VRS as dependent variable shows that farming experience and formal education has positive and significant effect on technical efficiency (TE) level, and land ownership status has negative and significant effect on TE level. Shallot production efficiency can be increased by using reduced inputs therefore able to increase farming profit while keep improving farmers’ education and agriculture extension programs for the next generation of farmers.

The adoption of technological innovations, such as an improved variety, has been widely promoted worldwide to improve agricultural productivity. This study aimed to examine factors affecting farmers’ decision to adopt a new improved cassava varieties (NICV), and to estimate the effects of NICV adoption on farmers’ technical efficiency. This research used cross-sectional data from 300 cassava farmers in East Java, Indonesia. Furthermore, the data were analyzed by probit regression to examine factors affecting farmers’ decision to adopt NICV. Propensity score matching (PSM) procedures and stochastic frontier analysis were applied to evaluate the impact of NICV adoption on farmers’ technical efficiency. The results indicated that adoption was highly influenced by cooperative membership, access to credit, internet access, certified land, and off-farm work. The stochastic frontier analysis, by controlling the matched sample using PSM procedures, demonstrated that NICV adoption positively and significantly impacted farmers’ technical efficiency. Those who adopted NICV showed a higher technical efficiency level than those who did not. This finding implies that improved varieties could be further promoted to increase productivity. The research suggests that there is a need to improve NICV adoption to increase the levels of technical efficiency and productivity.

Abstract This study investigates the relationship between farm size and technical efficiency for maize production in Rwanda. Since levels of technical efficiency tend to vary considerably across farms in sub-Saharan Africa, with a mixture of both inefficient and fully efficient farms, the use of the conventional stochastic frontier method is not appropriate. In this paper, we apply a zero-inefficiency stochastic frontier method that manages both efficiency and inefficiency in the studied sample. The average technical efficiency of maize farms for the full sample is estimated at 0.64, demonstrating that maize output can be improved by approximately 36% without increasing the proportion of farm inputs used. Regarding the relationship between farm size and technical efficiency, the study results show a positive relationship between farm size and technical efficiency for maize production in Rwanda. Thus, the enforcement of land reforms such as land consolidation and enhanced aggregate productivity growth are needed. The results also indicate that education, cooperative membership, extension services, access to credit, off-farm income, land tenure, and livestock ownership have significant and positive effects on technical efficiency.

Cocoa is an export oriented strategic plantation commodity that contributes to foreign exchange in Indonesia. It is mostly planted in Sulawesi Island, therefore, serves as a source of income for farmers. The purpose of this study was to analyze the efficiency of cocoa farming in Pohuwato Regency, Gorontalo. A total of 55 respondents were selected by simple random sampling. Furthermore, the Cobb Douglas stochastic frontier production function was used to analyze technical production efficiency and factors affecting it. Cocoa farming can be categorized as profitable, as the farmer reached average profit IDR 6,312,679/ha/year. However, in general cocoa farmers have not yet technically efficient because their technical efficiency value was only 0.52. The cocoa production efficiency was positively and significantly affected by land area, fertilizer, pesticides and labor. The increase in farmer age causes a positive and significant rise in inefficiency. Conversely, education and the number of family members have a negative effect, although not significant. Therefore, it requires to increase cocoa farming efficiency by increasing farmers’ access to production inputs such as fertilizers and pesticides, and improving the management of cocoa cultivation.

The tomato had nutritional, economic and health benefits to the societies, however, its production and productivity were low in developing countries and particularly in Ethiopia. This might be due to technical inefficiency caused by institutional, governmental, and farmers related factors. Therefore this study tried to investigate the factors that affecting technical efficiency and estimating the mean level of technical efficiency of tomato producers in Asaita district, Afar Regional State, Ethiopia. Both primary and secondary data sources were used; the primary data was collected from 267 tomato producers from the study area cross-sectional by using a multistage sampling technique. The single-stage stochastic frontier model and Cobb Douglas production function were applied and statistical significance was declared at 0.05. The maximum likelihood estimates of the stochastic frontier model showed that land, labor, tomato seed, and oxen have a significant effect on tomato output; and education, extension contact, training, and access to credit have a positive and significant effect on technical efficiency, whereas household size, off-farm income, livestock ownership, distance to market, and pesticides have a worthy and significant effect on technical efficiency; and also estimated mean technical efficiency of tomato producer in a study area was 80.9%. In a line with this, the responsible body should prioritize rural infrastructure development in areas such as education, marketplace, and farmer training centers; demonstrate access to credit and extension services; use the recommended amount of pesticides per hectare, and give more intension to mixed farming rather than animal husbandry exclusively.
