AbstractObjective: Mint (Mentha spp.) genotypes used as spices are cultivated in Turkey and used for different purposes including herbal tea, spices, the cosmetics industry, and are used in folk medicine. While mint species have been used in traditional practices during humanity’s long history, there is limited research on the comparison of their antioxidant capacity and phenolic contents. This aim of the research is to compare antioxidant capacity and phenolic contents in mint clones to determine superior genotypes for herbal and spice usage and cultivation.Methods: Antioxidant capacity was evaluated by ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC). Total phenolic content in clones were determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method.Results: Maximum total phenolic content [28.27±3.95 μg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW)] and FRAP activity 577.09±46.02 μmol Trolox equiv/g DW were obtained from Clone 13 (M. spicata), while M. piperita clones were higher for TEAC activity (800.02±1.10 μmol Trolox equiv/g DW). The results were first records for M. villoso nervata. FRAP and TEAC activities selected clones were correlated with total phenolic content (r=0.77; 0.73 respectively).Conclusion: According to the results, it can be suggested that Clone 13, Clone 5, (M. spicata) Clone 3 and Clone 8 (M. piperita) are more suitable for use as spice, herbal tea, and antioxidant agents. The clones must be selected for commercial cultivation by the grower and they can be used as spices and herbal teas.

Fruits of nine Prunus spinosa and P. insititia selections were compared in their ferric reducing antioxidant power and total phenolic content. The antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content ranged between 6.36 and 29.26 mmol AA/L, and 5.04 and 29.71 mmol GA/L, respectively. These ranges cover an almost 5-times variation among the tested genotypes. The Pearson’s coefficient was very high (0.92) indicating a major contribution of polyphenolics to the antioxidant capacity of the tested Prunus fruits. Conserving resulted in an approximate 20 % loss of antioxidant power and slightly increased phenolic contents. Our results led us to the conclusion that fruit of Prunus spinosa and P. insititia might be considered as rich sources of antioxidants. In addition, procession with heat treatment caused only a slight decrease in the antioxidant capacity without loss in the total polyphenolic content.

This study was aimed to investigate the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of elicited pigeon pea (Cajanus cajan) sprouts prepared using various Na-alginate concentrations at different elicitation durations. The germination power and yield of the sprouts were also examined. Elicitation proved capable to improve the antioxidant capacity of legumes sprouts but the yield and germination rates were decreased due to the elicitation stress. In this study, elicitation conducted by immersing pigeon pea seeds in Na -alginate solutions (250, 300, and 350 ppm) for various duration (16, 20, and 24 hrs). The seeds were then germinated for 48 hrs to produce Na-alginate elicited pigeon pea sprouts. The results showed that the total phenolic content (TPC) and antioxidant activity (Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, TEAC, and Ferric reducing antioxidant power, FRAP) of elicited pigeon pea sprouts were significantly increased along with the increasing elicitation duration in all Na-alginate levels. The higher Na-alginate levels produce a higher level of TPC, TEAC, and FRAP values. On the other hand, germination power and the yield of the sprouts were significantly decreased along with increasing Na-alginate levels and elicitation duration. Elicitation using 350 ppm Na-alginate with an elicitation duration of 24 hrs produces elicited pigeon pea sprouts with the highest TPC and antioxidant activity, but lowest germination power and yield. These results have an important consequence in developing an elicitation technique to improve the antioxidant capacity of leguminous.

Rooibos is brewed from the medicinal plant Aspalathus linearis. It has a well-established wide spectrum of bio-activity properties, which in part may be attributed to the phenolic antioxidant power. The antioxidant capacity (AOC) of rooibos is related to its total phenolic content (TPC). The relation between TPC and AOC of randomly selected 51 fermented (FR) and 47 unfermented (UFR) rooibos samples was studied after extraction using water and methanol separately. The resulted extracts were assessed using two antioxidant assays, trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The results were analyzed using both simple statistical methods and machine learning. The analysis showed different trends of TPC and AOC correlations of FR and UFR samples, depending on the solvent used for extraction. The results of the water extracts showed similar TPC and higher AOC of FR than UFR samples, while the methanolic extracted samples showed higher TPC and AOC of UFR than FR. As a result, the methanolic extracts showed better agreement between TPC and AOC than water extracts. Possible explanations are given for these observed results. Although, the current literature demonstrates direct correlations of the TPC and AOC of rooibos water extracts. This study showed deviation and highlighted the importance of solvent selection and analysis methodology as an important factor in determining the TPC/AOC correlation and subsequently the expectation of the actual health benefits of rooibos herbal tea. In particular, unfermented and fermented samples can be accurately identified on the basis of a combination of assays (any two of TPC, FRAP and TEAC), especially if methanol is the solvent used. Machine learning analysis of assay data provides nearly identical results with classical statistical analytical methods. This is the first report on machine learning analysis and comparison of the TPC and AOC of rooibos herbal tea extracted with methanol and water, and highlights the importance of using methanol as a solvent to evaluate its AOC.

Tea is among the most consumed drink worldwide, and its strong antioxidant activity is considered as the main contributor to several health benefits, such as cardiovascular protection and anticancer effect. In this study, the antioxidant activities of 30 tea infusions, which were obtained by the mimic of drinking tea of the public, from green, black, oolong, white, yellow and dark teas, were evaluated using ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) assays, ranging from 504.80 ± 17.44 to 4647.47 ± 57.87 µmol Fe2+/g dry weight (DW) and 166.29 ± 24.48 to 2532.41 ± 50.18 µmol Trolox/g DW, respectively. Moreover, their total phenolic contents (TPC) were detected by Folin-Ciocalteu assay and were in the range of 24.77 ± 2.02 to 252.65 ± 4.74 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g DW. Generally, Dianqing Tea, Lushan Yunwu Tea, and Xihu Longjing Tea showed the strongest antioxidant activities among 30 teas. Furthermore, the phenolic compounds in tea infusions were identified and quantified, with catechins most commonly detected, especially in green tea infusions, which were main contributors to their antioxidant activities. Besides tea polyphenols, considerable content of caffeine also presented in 30 tea infusions.

In the past few years, there has been a renewed interest in studying a wide variety of food products that show beneficial effects on human health.Capsicumis an important agricultural crop, not only because its economic importance, but also for the nutritional values of its pods, mainly due to the fact that they are an excellent source of antioxidant compounds, and also of specific constituents such as the pungent capsaicinoids localized in the placental tissue. This current study was designed to evaluate the antioxidant capacity and total phenolic contents from fruits tissues of twoCapsicum chinenseaccessions, namely, Chak k’an-iik (orange) and MR8H (red), at contrasting maturation stages. Results showed that red immature placental tissue, with a Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity (TEAC) value of 55.59 μmols TE g−1 FW, exhibited the strongest total antioxidant capacity using both the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and the CUPRAC methods. Placental tissue also had the highest total phenolic content (27 g GAE 100 g−1 FW). The antioxidant capacity ofCapsicumwas directly related to the total amount of phenolic compounds detected. In particular, placentas had high levels of capsaicinoids, which might be the principal responsible for their strong antioxidant activities.

The consumption of herbal teas has become popular in recent years due to their attractive flavors and outstanding antioxidant properties. The Five-Golden-Flowers tea is a herbal tea consisting of five famous edible flowers. The effects of microwave-assisted extraction parameters on the antioxidant activity of Five-Golden-Flowers tea were studied by single-factor experiments, and further investigated using response surface methodology. Under the optimal parameters (53.04 mL/g of solvent/material ratio, 65.52 °C, 30.89 min, and 500 W), the ferric-reducing antioxidant power, Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, and total phenolic content of the herbal tea were 862.90 ± 2.44 µmol Fe2+/g dry weight (DW), 474.37 ± 1.92 µmol Trolox/g DW, and 65.50 ± 1.26 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g DW, respectively. The in vivo antioxidant activity of the herbal tea was evaluated on alcohol-induced acute liver injury in mice. The herbal tea significantly decreased the levels of aspartate aminotransferase, total bilirubin, and malonaldehyde at different doses (200, 400, and 800 mg/kg); improved the levels of liver index, serum triacylglycerol, and catalase at dose of 800 mg/kg. These results indicated its role in alleviating hepatic oxidative injury. Besides, rutin, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, gallic acid, and p-coumaric acid were identified and quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), which could contribute to the antioxidant activity of the herbal tea.

Abstract Objectives Sweetpotato leaf (SPL) is a natural source of phenolic compounds with potential utility as an antioxidant. The study aimed to measure the impacts of the years on SPL total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity and to identify and quantify the individual phenolic compounds. Methods Sweetpotato leaves in 2018 (27 varieties) and 2019 (24 varieties) were grinded and lyophilized. Phenolic compounds were extracted with 70% ethanol from SPLs. Total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method and antioxidant potential was determined by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging assay. Five SPL samples with statistically highest antioxidant capacity were identified and quantified by HPLC. All statistical analyses were carried out by SAS software using ANOVA. Statistical significance was accepted at P < 0.05. Results The average of total phenolic contents in 2018 SPL samples was 43 ± 13 mg gallic acid equivalent (GAE)/g dry weight (DW) SPL whereas in 2019, it was 53 ± 9 mg GAE/g dry weight SPL. Antioxidant capacity in 2018 was 110 ± 75 µmol Trolox equivalent (TE)/g dry weight SPL whereas in 2019, it was 132 ± 32 µmol TE/g dry weight SPL. SPL1 had the highest antioxidant potential, followed by SPL9, SPL3, SPL28, and SPL11 (P < 0.05). The concentrations of major identified phenolics from the five SPL samples (#1, 9, 3, 28, and 11) in dry weight of SPL were: chlorogenic acid at 3.05 ± 0.35 mg/g, 5-monocaffeoylquinic acid (CQA) at 0.71 ± 0.06 mg chlorogenic acid equivalent (ChAE)/g, 4-CQA at 0.99 ± 0.07 mg ChAE/g, 3,4-diCQA at 1.22 ± 0.18 mg ChAE/g, 3,4,5-triCQA at 1.2 ± 0.18 mg ChAE/g, and 3,5-diCQA at 15.5 ± 4.05 mg ChAE/g. 3,5-diCQA, the predominant phenolic, was present in the highest amounts in SPL1. Conclusions The results showed that sweetpotato leaves collected in 2019 contained higher total phenolics and antioxidant capacity than the ones collected in 2018. Phenolic compounds have strong antioxidant activity in Arkansas-grown sweetpotato leaves. This study warrants further investigation of sweetpotato leaves to be utilized as an antioxidant. A limited number of mosses have ever been studied in regard to antioxidant activity; with only few belonging to the European species. As part of our on-going screening of bryophytes as natural antioxidant resources, a relevant biological activity investigation was conducted on the three moss species, namely Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp. (Brachytheciaceae), Calliergonella cuspidata (Hedw.) Loeske (Hypnaceae) and Hypnum mammillatum (Brid.) Loeske (Hypnaceae), collected in Germany. The antioxidant activity of corresponding lyophilised aqueous extracts (teas) was evaluated on the basis of their ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] cation scavenging activities. The total phenolic contents were determined as well. This study led to the detection of a moderate total phenolic content of the moss B. rutabulum, indicating for the first time its potential in searching for novel antioxidant agents.

This paper describes the plant-mediated preparation of silver nanoparticles with aqueous extract and infusion of Cistus incanus leaves. To evaluate aqueous extract and infusion antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content the DPPH and Folin–Ciocalteau methods were utilized. The antioxidant capacity and total phenolic content of extract and infusion were equal to 85.97 ± 6.54 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram of dry weight.; 10.76 ± 0.59 mg/mL and 12.65 ± 1.04 mg gallic acid equivalents per gram of dry weight.; 3.10 ± 0.14 mg/mL, respectively. The formed nanoparticles displayed the characteristic absorption band in the 380–450 nm wavelength range. The average size of particles was in the 68.8–71.2 nm range. Morphology and phase composition analysis revealed the formation of spherical nanoparticles with a face-centred cubic structure. Immune compatibility tests of nanoparticles and plant extracts showed no activation of the THP1-XBlue™ monocyte. Cytotoxicity tests performed with L929 mice fibroblasts showed that nanoparticles should be utilized at a concentration of 16 ppm. The minimum inhibitory concentrations determined with the microdilution method for nanoparticles prepared with plant infusion for S. aureus and S. epidermidis were 2 ppm and 16 ppm, respectively.

Tea has been reported to prevent and manage many chronic diseases, such as cancer, diabetes, obesity, and cardiovascular diseases, and the antioxidant capacity of tea may be responsible for these health benefits. In this study, the antioxidant capacities of fat-soluble, water-soluble, and bound-insoluble fractions of 30 Chinese teas belonging to six categories, namely green, black, oolong, dark, white, and yellow teas, were systematically evaluated, applying ferric-reducing antioxidant power and Trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity assays. In addition, total phenolic contents of teas were determined by Folin–Ciocalteu method, and the contents of 18 main phytochemical compounds in teas were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results found that several teas possessed very strong antioxidant capacity, and caffeine, theaflavine, gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, ellagic acid, and kaempferol-3-O-glucoside, as well as eight catechins, were the main antioxidant compounds in them. Thus, these teas could be good natural sources of dietary antioxidants, and their extracts might be developed as food additives, nutraceuticals, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals.
