Abstract Dried slightly sticky mango sheets is healthy sweet snack, having slightly chewy texture. The objective of this work was to study the effect of drying temperatures (60, 70 and 80 °C) on the drying characteristics, total phenolic content (TPC), antioxidant activity (assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays) and specific energy consumption of the dried slightly sticky mango sheets. The experimental results showed that the times required to reach the desired final moisture content were 230, 150 and 120 min when drying was performed at the temperatures of 60, 70 and 80 °C, respectively. The total specific energy consumption (SECtotal) values of the drying at 70 and 80 °C were lower than that at 60 °C. However, the TPC and the antioxidant activities assessed by DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity assays were not significantly different amongst the samples dried at different temperatures.

Dried Pleurotus ostreatus mushrooms stored in polythene and polypropylene packs were exposed to gamma radiation from a cobalt-60 source at doses of 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, and 2 kGy at a dose rate of 1.7 kGy/hr and stored for a period of 1 month. Total phenolic contents, flavonoids, and free radical scavenging activity DPPH (2,2′-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) were determined using aqueous, ethanol, and methanol extracts by Folin-Ciocaultaeu method as a source of potential natural antioxidants. Total phenol content ranged 0.56 ± 0.01–10.96 ± 1.7 mg/GAE, flavonoids ranged 1.64 ± 0.05–8.92 ± 0.6 mg/QE, DPPH radical scavenging activity also ranged 7.02 ± 0.10–13.03 ± 0.04%, and IC50 values also ranged 0.08–0.16 mg/mL. Statistical differences (P < 0.05) were recorded for the extracts and the treatment doses of mushrooms stored in polythene and polypropylene packs. A significant linear correlation was confirmed between values for the total phenolic content and antioxidant activity of mushroom extracts. The high contents of phenolic compounds indicated that these compounds contribute to high antioxidant activity. Pleurotus ostreatus can be regarded as a promising candidate for natural mushroom sources of antioxidants with high value. The use of low dose gamma radiation by the local food industry could improve the hygienic quality, extend shelf-life, and preserve nutrients and antinutrients.

A limited number of mosses have ever been studied in regard to antioxidant activity; with only few belonging to the European species. As part of our on-going screening of bryophytes as natural antioxidant resources, a relevant biological activity investigation was conducted on the three moss species, namely Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) Schimp. (Brachytheciaceae), Calliergonella cuspidata (Hedw.) Loeske (Hypnaceae) and Hypnum mammillatum (Brid.) Loeske (Hypnaceae), collected in Germany. The antioxidant activity of corresponding lyophilised aqueous extracts (teas) was evaluated on the basis of their ABTS [2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulphonic acid)] cation scavenging activities. The total phenolic contents were determined as well. This study led to the detection of a moderate total phenolic content of the moss B. rutabulum, indicating for the first time its potential in searching for novel antioxidant agents.

Abstract. Prihantini AI, Rizqiani K. 2019. Various antioxidant assays of agarwood extracts (Gyrinops versteegii) from West Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Asian J Agric 3: 1-5. However, the species have not been widely explored as a source of natural products in particular antioxidant agents, which protect cells from damage caused by free radicals. The present study was aimed to evaluate antioxidant activities of agarwood extracts from West Nusa Tenggara using various antioxidant assays. The antioxidant activity of leaf, fruit and fruit bark extracts were investigated based on DPPH radicals scavenging activity, reducing power, and β-carotene bleaching assays. The total phenolic content was also investigated. The result showed that leaf extract revealed the strongest antioxidant activity on all assays performed such as DPPH radicals scavenging activity (IC50 22.13±0.71 μg/mL); reducing power (251.85±0.03 mg QE/g dry extract); and β-carotene bleaching activity (IC50 24.23±2.60 μg/mL). The total phenolic content (TPC) in the leaf was higher (184.90±0.76 mg GAE/g dry extract) than fruit bark and bark extracts. The high content of phenolic compounds in G. versteegii leaves indicated that these compounds might contribute to the antioxidant activities. In conclusion, these findings showed that G. versteegii leaves are potential for development as an antioxidant source.

In this study we investigate the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antidiabetic activities of ethanolic leaves extracts of three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera L. namely: “Ghars”, “Deglet Nour” and “Hamraya”. The assessment of the antioxidant potential of crude leaves extracts, using superoxide anions inhibition, DPPH and total antioxidant activity essays, was carried out. Furthermore, the anti-inflammatory properties of the extracts were determined by measuring the inhibition of nitric oxide (NO) production. Moreover, the antidiabetic effect was evaluated by inhibition of α-amylase enzymes. The total phenolic content measured by Folin-Ciocalteu method was as well conducted. The raw leaves extracts of the selected varieties was found to contain a high content of total phenolic content (342.45 mg GAE/gDW for GE) and therefore exhibited a higher antioxidant activity and inhibitory effect of radicals scavenging activity against DPPH and superoxide anion (IC50 = 7.44 μg/mL and 39.11 μg/mL respectively). The three varieties exhibited significant inhibition nitric oxide using In Vitro assay (IC50 = 240.28 μg/mL for GE). The extracts also displayed high inhibition actions against α-amylase enzymes. The results suggest that the leaves of the three selected varieties of Phoenyx dactylifera can be considered as a good source of natural antioxidant and anti-inflammation drugs as well as potent antidiabetic medicine.

The roadsides of the Kumasi Metropolis, Ghana are lined with the several species of trees, such as, Terminalia catappa, Mangifera indica, Ficus platyphylla and Polyalthia longifolia. The people use them for their health care needs. The vehicle emissions results in oxidative injury in these plants, due to the production of reactive oxygen species. The present study assessed the antioxidant potential of leaves of these tree species subjected to vehicular pollutants. The free radical scavenging activity of leaf extracts of the four tree species were measured using 1, 1- diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH). The total phenolic content (TPC) of the extract was determined by a spectrophotometric assay using the Folin-Ciocalteau’s reagent. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC) was measured using Phosphomolybdate assay. In this study, the medicinal properties of leaves of Terminalia catappa, Mangifera indica, Ficus platyphylla and Polyalthia longifolia sampled from the control sites showed better medicinal properties. DPPH scavenging activity at concentration 2.7 ug ml-1 was lower at the arterial road sites in all the four tree species. A higher DPPH percentage inhibition was recorded at the control sites. The IC50 values were higher for the leaf sample extracts from the arterial road sites and lower for the Control site. The total phenolic content of leaf samples of all the four tree species at the arterial road sites were lower than and significantly different from those at the Control site (p=0.000). The TAC values were lower at the arterial road sites in comparison to the control sites. There was a significant difference among the arterial road sites and also when compared with the control (P<0.05). It could be suggested from this study that variability exists in the antioxidant activities of plants due to a decrease in the medicinal properties of plants subjected to constant auto vehicular pollution.

This research aimed to determine the antioxidant activity of coconut sap added by different concentration of lysine during the heating process by means of regression analysis. This regression can be utilized to predict the antioxidant activity of coconut sap. A number of antioxidant parameters, i.e. total phenolic content, browning intensity, DPPH scavenging activity, and chelating activity, were measured using standard methods. The results showed that the changes in the total phenolic content of coconut sap against temperature during heating process followed a logarithmic regression function. The correlation between total phenolic content and heating temperature was quite strong until the temperature reached 100oC. Moreover, the changes in both browning intensity and DPPH scavenging activity of coconut sap against heating temperature followed an exponential regression. A quadratic regression function can represent the relationship between the chelating activity of coconut sap and heating temperature since the correlation of those parameters was relatively strong in the temperature range of 28-100oC. This study showed that the changes in total phenolic content, browning intensity, DPPH scavenging activity, and chelating activity of coconut sap during heating can be determined using regression analysis.

The aim of this research is to cultivate Brazilian Cherry Fruits (Eugenia uniflora L.) Plants in NSTU (Noakhali Science and Technology University) Campus, Noakhali, Bangladesh for fruits production and to determine the qualitative antioxidant test, antioxidant activities and total phenolic content of different solvent extracts (Water, Methanol and Ethanol) of Ripe Brazilian Cherry Fruits in Red Color and compare those activities with non-ripe Brazilian Cherry fruits in Green color. The qualitative antioxidant test was determined by simple TLC method and antioxidant activity was determined by DPPH radical inhibition method while the total phenolic content was determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. The result of the qualitative determination of Antioxidant test indicated that all extracts of Brazilian Cherry Fruits contain high antioxidant compounds. Among the analyzed fruits of all extracts, in both Ripe and Non-Ripe stage, the water extract of non-ripe Brazilian Cherry Fruits (BC-GC-W) showed the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity (73.66%) and showed the lowest IC50 of DPPH scavenging activity (1.01 µg/ml) which may be due to the presence of high content of Vitamin C. Among all extracts of Ripe and non-ripe, the methanol extract of non-ripe Brazilian Cherry Fruits in Green Color (BC-GC-M) was found to be highest total phenolic content 111.52 mg GAE/100g, and the ethanol extracts of Ripe Brazilian Cherry Fruits in Red Color (BC-RC-E) was found to be lowest total phenolic content, 106.004 mg GAE/100g.The overall results that were obtained in this study will be one of the important key strategies by adding this fruits in the diet chart to prevent and fight against infection recently caused by COVID-19 in worldwide and other infectious diseases by increasing our body immunity in the long term and this fruits also will be useful as a raw materials in the pharmaceutical and food industries to prepare drugs and food products.
