Introduction. Burnout syndrome is the result of chronic emotional stress. It is characterized by high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, and reduced level of personal accomplishment. The aim of this study was to determine the level of stress and risk for burnout syndrome in doctors employed in health centers and hospitals, and to investigate the impact of socio-demographic characteristics on the level of stress and the occurrence of burnout syndrome. Material and Methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the period from October 1 to December 31, 2015 in three health centers and in the University Clinical Center of the Republic of Srpska. The survey was anonymous. A socio-demographic questionnaire and a questionnaire for self-assessment of the level of stress and Maslach Burn?out Inventory were used as research instruments. Out of 151 doctors included in the study, 49% were family physicians, and 51% were hospital doctors. Results. The analysis of responses to questionnaires for self-assessment of stress level revealed that 51.7% of participants had high levels of stress (52.7% of family physicians, 50.6% of doctors working in hospital). A high degree of emotional exhaustion was found in 27.2% of participants (29.7% of family physicians, 24.6% of doctors working in hospital), high depersonalization was found in 23.8% of participants (25.7% of family physicians, 22.1% of doctors working in hospital), a low level of personal accomplishment was found in 39.7% of participants (37.8% of family physicians, 41.6% of doctors working in hospital). No statistically significant difference regarding stress degree, emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and personal accomplishment was found between hospital doctors and family physicians. The physicians aged over 45 years had a significantly (p = 0.030) higher level of emotional exhaustion than their younger colleagues. Conclusion. This study found that there was a high risk of burnout syndrome in physicians in the Republic of Srpska. Although the exposure to professional stress was higher in family physicians than in hospital doctors, the obtained difference was not statistically significant.

Introduction. Burnout syndrome is a common problem among healthcareworkers. The aim of the study was to investigate the level of stress, componentsof burnout syndrome and the most common causes of workplacestress among the physicians working in the Primary Health Care CenterBanja Luka, after which the obtained results concerning family physiciansand the physicians of other specialties were compared.Methods. The observational study was conducted by interviewing physiciansduring the period March to May 2018. All employed physicians wereprovided with the following questionnaires: The socio-demographic questionnaire,The questionnaire for self-assessment of the level of stress, Thequestionnaire about the most frequent causes of stress at work and theMaslach Burnout Inventory.Results. The study included 211 physicians, out of a total of 246 physicians(127 family physicians and 84 physicians of other specialties) working inthe Primary Health Care Center Banja Luka. There was a significantly higherlevel of stress (p = 0.011), emotional exhaustion (p < 0.001) and depersonalization(p < 0.001) among family physicians compared to the physiciansof other specialties. There was a significant difference in the presence ofall causes of stress among family physicians, except the stress concerningthe patients requiring emergency care. The multivariate logistic regressionanalysis found that stress was significantly associated with emotional exhaustionin both groups and with personal accomplishment in family physicians.In family physicians, there was a significant association between ahigh level of depersonalization and personal accomplishment. In physiciansof other specialties significant association was found between educationand emotional exhaustion as well as personal accomplishment, and betweenfemale gender and high level of depersonalization.Conclusion. The level of stress and the burnout syndrome were considerablymore present in family physicians compared to physicians of otherspecialties.

Teachers' experience emotional exhaustion and develop a cynical attitude toward teaching and students (depersonalization). Feelings of exhaustion and ineffectiveness continue as mental and physical resources are depleted in the pursuit of unreachable and sometimes unrealistic goals (Maslach, Schaefeli & Leiter 2001).The teacher then experiences a reduction in accomplishments, leaving him or her with a loss of self-esteem and dissatisfaction with these job accomplishments. This chain of event ultimately interferes with the burnout in teacher's ability to continue to meet teaching demands. Thus, the three dimensions of the burnout syndrome: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment, begins. Consequences of teacher burnout can lead to feelings of hopelessness, absenteeism, increased turnover, and decreased job performance. The results of current study indicated that male primary school teachers score higher mean scores than female teachers in depersonalization than female teachers had of personal accomplishment. No significant difference between private and government primary school teachers with reference to job burnout were found. However private school teachers feel more emotional exhaustion as compared to their counterparts in government schools.

AbstractObjective:Burnout syndrome is a work-related professional distress. Palliative care physicians often have to deal with complex end-of-life situations and are at risk of presenting with burnout syndrome, which has been little studied in this population. Our study aims to identify the impact of clinical settings (in a palliative care unit (PCU) or on a palliative care mobile team (PCMT)) on palliative care physicians.Method:We undertook a cross-sectional study using a questionnaire that included the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI), and we gathered sociodemographic and professional data. The questionnaire was sent to all 590 physicians working in palliative care in France between July of 2012 and February of 2013.Results:The response rate was 61, 8% after three reminders. Some 27 (9%) participants showed high emotional exhaustion, 12 (4%) suffered from a high degree of depersonalization, and 71 (18%) had feelings of low personal accomplishment. Physicians working on a PCMT tended (p = 0.051) to be more likely to suffer from emotional exhaustion than their colleagues. Physicians working on a PCMT worked on smaller teams (fewer physicians, p < 0.001; fewer nonphysicians, p < 0.001). They spent less time doing research (p = 0.019), had fewer resources (p = 0.004), and their expertise seemed to be underrecognized by their colleagues (p = 0.023).Significance of Results:The prevalence of burnout in palliative care physicians was low and in fact lower than that reported in other populations (e.g., oncologists). Working on a palliative care mobile team can be a more risky situation, associated with a lack of medical and paramedical staff.

The correlation between the burnout syndrome and sociodemographic variables in nursing professionals has been widely studied though research results are contradictory. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of gender, marital status, and children on the dimensions of the burnout syndrome (emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and personal accomplishment) in nursing professionals, as measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory. The search was performed in May 2018 in the next databases: CINAHL, CUIDEN, Dialnet, Psicodoc, ProQuest Platform, OVID Platform, and Scopus with the search equation (“Maslach Burnout Inventory” OR “MBI”) AND “nurs*”, without using any search restriction. The sample was n = 78 studies: 57 studies for gender; 32 for marital status; 13 for having children. A statistically significant relation between depersonalization and gender (r = 0.078), marital status (r = 0.047), and children (r = 0.053) was found. A significant relation was also found between emotional exhaustion and children (r = 0.048). The results showed that being male, being single or divorced, and not having children were related to the highest levels of burnout in nurses. Moreover, these relations could be accentuated by the influence of moderator variables (age, seniority, job satisfaction, etc.), which, in combination with the previously mentioned significant relations, should be evaluated in the design burnout risk profiles for nursing professionals.

Introducción: El objetivo del estudio fue identificar la prevalencia del Síndrome de Burnout y sus dimensiones en el personal de enfermería de unidades de cuidado crítico y de hospitalización.Metodología: Se llevó a cabo un estudio observacional descriptivo, transversal en 90 enfermeras y enfermeros. Se utilizó el Cuestionario de Maslach Burnout Inventory para el personal de salud. Se realizó análisis exploratorio y análisis descriptivo e inferencial; se emplearon los estadísticos U de Mann Whitney y Kruskal Wallis.Resultados: Se encontró nivel medio de Síndrome de Burnout 82.2%; Agotamiento Emocional bajo 62.2%; nivel bajo de Despersonalización 57.8% y nivel bajo de Falta de Realización Personal 40%. Se evidenció diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre Síndrome de Burnout y turno de trabajo, doble turno al mes, períodos vacacionales al año y carga de trabajo; entre Agotamiento Emocional y tipo de servicio, ingreso quincenal, doble turno al mes, períodos vacacionales, tipo de contratación y carga de trabajo; entre Despersonalización y carga de trabajo; y entre Falta de Realización Personal y tipo de servicio, gusto por el servicio, turno de trabajo, ingreso quincenal, períodos de descanso en el turno, períodos vacacionales al año y tipo de contratación.Conclusiones: Un porcentaje mayor del personal de enfermería obtuvo nivel medio de Síndrome de Burnout. No se encontró diferencia estadísticamente significativa entre el síndrome de Burnout y sus dimensiones con las características sociológicas del personal de enfermería. Se encontró evidencia de que las características laborales son las que presentan mayor influencia en el desarrollo del Síndrome de Burnout. Introduction: The objective of the study was to identify the prevalence of the Burnout Syndrome and its dimensions in the nursing personnel working in the critical care and hospitalization units.Methodology: A descriptive, observational, and cross-sectional study was performed in 90 nurses. The Maslach Burnout Inventory for health personnel was used. An exploratory, descriptive, and inferential analysis was carried out; the Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests statistics were used.Results: A medium level regarding the burnout syndrome, 82.2%, was found; emotional exhaustion decreased by 62.2%; low level of depersonalization, 57.8%, and low level of lack of personal accomplishment, 40%. There was a statistically significant difference between burnout syndrome and work shift, double work shift per month, vacation periods per year, and workload; between emotional exhaustion and type of service, two-week income, double work shift, vacation periods, type of procurement, and workload; between depersonalization and workload; and between lack of personal accomplishment and type of service, work shift, two-week income, rest period during the shift, vacation periods per year, and type of procurement. Conclusions: A higher percentage of nursing personnel had a mild burnout syndrome. No statistically significant difference between burnout syndrome and its dimensions and the sociological characteristics of the nursing personnel was found. Evidence that job characteristics are those that show more influence in the development of the burnout syndrome was found.

Introduction: Burnout syndrome occurs as a result of prolonged exposure to emotional and interpersonal stressors in the workplace and is characterised by three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization and personal achievements. Research and prevention of this phenomenon are of public health importance due to numerous consequences it leaves on the health of the working population and work organisation, and among teachers, on children as direct users of their services. The research aims to examine the presence of the stress and burnout syndrome at work in teachers in the regions of the Republic of Srpska, as well as to determine the existence of differences between regions. Methods: The research was conducted as a cross-sectional study in the period August-September 2018, in the territory of the Republic of Srpska. The target population was represented by teachers of primary and secondary schools. The response rate in all regions was 75 % or above it. For this research, a special questionnaire was constructed, consisting of sociodemographic data, data on economic characteristics of the respondents, characteristics of the work environment, as well as data on satisfaction with equipment and resources at work, support from family and friends and presence of work-life conflict. In addition to the general questionnaire, the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Study (MBI-HSS) questionnaire for the assessment of the burnout syndrome at work, and Karasek's questionnaire (Job Content Questionnaire) for the assessment of stress at work were used. Results: A statistically significant difference in the prevalence of occupational stress among teachers between RS regions was found. Also, a statistically significant difference was found between the regions of the Republic of Srpska related to the dimensions of burnout syndrome at work. A high level of emotional exhaustion was more often reported by teachers from the territory of the region of East Sarajevo and Prijedor (8.0 % and 7.7 %) comparing to teachers from other regions. Teachers from the territory of Prijedor more often showed moderate and high levels of depersonalization, as well as a low level of personal achievements comparing to teachers from other regions. Conclusion: This research shows the presence of burnout syndrome in teachers of all the Republic of Srpska regions at the beginning of the school year, as well as statistically significant differences between the regions. This indicates the need for additional research on risk factors by regions to form targeted and thus more effective prevention measures.

Background: burnout syndrome is a serious and growing problem among medical staff. Its adverse outcomes not only affect health-care providers’ health, but also extend to their patients, resulting in bad-quality care. The COVID-19 pandemic puts frontline health-care providers at greater risk of psychological stress and burnout syndrome. Objectives: this study aimed to identify the levels of burnout among health-care professionals currently working at Assiut University hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: the current study adopted an online cross-sectional design using the SurveyMonkey® website for data collection. A total of 201 physicians were included and the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) scale was used to assess the three burnout syndrome dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced personal accomplishment. Results: about one-third, two-thirds, and one-quarter of the respondents had high emotional exhaustion, high depersonalization, and low personal accomplishment, respectively. Younger, resident, and single physicians reported higher burnout scores. The personal accomplishment score was significantly higher among males. Those working more than eight hours/day and dealing with COVID-19 patients had significantly higher scores. Conclusion: during the COVID-19 pandemic, a high prevalence of burnout was recorded among physicians. Age, job title, working duration, and working hours/day were significant predictors for burnout syndrome subscale results. Preventive and interventive programs should be applied in health-care organizations during pandemics.

Background Considering the importance of entrepreneurship and the impact of burnout on workers’ health, this study aims to explore the presence of burnout in entrepreneurs and the interaction of hardy personality (HP) in this process. Method The sample included 255 Spanish entrepreneurs. Occupational factors, working hours, labour immersion, HP, burnout syndrome (i.e. Emotional exhaustion, Depersonalization and Lack of accomplishment) and burnout consequences were assessed. Results Descriptive analysis showed that entrepreneurs had low levels of occupational factors, burnout syndrome and consequences. Hierarchical regression exploratory results indicated that working hours, labour immersion, and Emotional exhaustion were the most relevant predictors of the consequences. Besides, mediation models with PROCESS macro (v.3.0) highlighted the indirect effect of occupational factors and showed that emotional exhaustion was the only component of burnout that mediated in between the predictors and the consequences. As well, HP moderated the relationship between occupational factors and emotional exhaustion. Conclusions Occupational factors are the main predictor of burnout in entrepreneurs and HP could prevent their effect on Emotional exhaustion. The results suggest the importance of training to promote HP for better health and performance of entrepreneurs.

IntroductionThis is the first comprehensive evaluation of Burnout Syndrome across the UK Intensive Care Unit workforce and in all three Burnout Syndrome domains: Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalisation and lack of Personal Accomplishment.MethodsA questionnaire was emailed to UK Intensive Care Society members, incorporating the 22-item Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey for medical personnel. Burnout Syndrome domain scores were stratified by ‘risk’. Associations with gender, profession and age-group were explored.ResultsIn total, 996 multi-disciplinary responses were analysed. For Emotional Exhaustion, females scored higher and nurses scored higher than doctors. For Depersonalisation, males and younger respondents scored higher.ConclusionApproximately one-third of Intensive Care Unit team-members are at ‘high-risk’ for Burnout Syndrome, though there are important differences according to domain, gender, age-group and profession. This data may encourage a more nuanced understanding of Burnout Syndrome and more personalised strategies for our heterogeneous workforce.
