The vase here described was recently presented to the Otago Museum in commemoration of the distinguished services of Dr. H. D. Skinner, for many years Director of the Museum. It was formerly on the Rome market. It is restored from fragments, and missing pieces of the neck, mouth, and shoulder have been replaced by plaster. The joints and plaster restorations have been carefully painted over, and there has been a good deal of repainting where the glaze was worn. On the mouth, neck, and shoulder the restorations, though extensive, merely fill gaps in a well-defined pattern, and can therefore be passed over without a detailed description. The repainting of the figures on the body of the vase will be described at greater length below. The clay is a fine, clear red, rather lighter than the usual colour of Attic. The principal dimensions of the vase are as follows (measurements in metres):The body is ovoid, with high, flat shoulders. It is separated from the wide flaring foot by a low, raised ridge. A similar ridge separates the shoulder from the neck, which is cylindrical with slightly concave sides. The lip flares widely. The side handles are small and slope slightly upward; they are attached just above the widest part of the vase and below the sharpest curve of the shoulder. The vertical handle is divided by three deep, vertical grooves. The inside of the mouth and the upper surface of the foot are ornamented with rounded tongues of black glaze. These were painted alternately red and white, but the paint, which was applied on top of the black glaze, is now much worn. On the lower part of the body are short black rays; above these is a rather wider zone with a chain of five-petalled lotuses linked to five-leaved palmettes.

Readers have always acknowledged the comparatively clear macrostructure of De rerum natura 3. It begins with a prooemium in which is described the terrifying impact which the fear of death has on human lives, as well as the fact that Epicurus has provided a cure against this fear, namely his physical doctrines (1–93). Particular attention is paid to fears of an afterlife in which we have to suffer pain and grief in the underworld; cf., for instance, the programmatic lines 3.37–40 (translation by Ferguson Smith, which will be used throughout):This prooemium is followed by a long passage (94–829) in which Lucretius explains the basics of Epicurean psychology and tries to show that the soul is (like the body) material and hence mortal; this last point is driven home with particular force in II. 417–829 where Lucretius lists twenty-five proofs for the mortality of the soul.

Most safety related valves in EDF’s nuclear plant must prove their ability to sustain thermal shocks of approximately 240K amplitude. This paper evaluates the simulation of a globe valve tested for thermal shocks. Since the physical test campaign showed inadequate internal sealing, the simulation focuses on the residual deformation of the hard alloy, planar seat, welded on successive body designs. This deformation is the result of the thermal loadings first induced by the welding process, then by fluid flow inside the valve. A chain of 3D simulations successively computes: a welding temperature transient in the body, the resulting strain hardening — especially in the seat vicinity —; temperature transients in the flow and the valve parts, and the resulting strains in the body causing a bump deformation of the seat surface. This end result agrees with measurements on the tested valve specimen. We show that inaccurate results are obtained on simpler assumptions, such as no welding, and we give insights on the dominant effect of the first hot, cold, hot transient over other profiles. Finally, the agreement we obtain on deformation predictions is toned down by an unsatisfactory sealing prediction, as well as the complexity and duration of the simulation chain compared with physical testing.

SUMMARYThe body-temperature of the following fishes, crustaceans, and echinoderms has been examined and compared with the temperature of the water in which they live:—Cod-fish (Gadus morrhua), ling (Molva vulgaris), torsk (Brosmius brosme), coal-fish or saithe (Gadus virens), haddock (Gadus œgelfinus), flounder (Pleuronectes flesus), smelt (Osmerus eperlanus), dog-fish (Scyllium catulus), shore crab (Carcinus mœnas), edible crab (Cancer pagurus), lobster (Homarus vulgaris), sea-urchin (Echinus esculentus), and starfish (Asterias rubens). The minimum, maximum, and mean temperature difference for each species are given in the following table:—The excess of temperature is most evident in the larger specimens. This is well shown in the case of the coal-fish, where in the adult it was 0°·7 C., and in the great majority (11 out of 12) of the young of the first year, 0°·0 C. The body-weight and the conditions under which the fish are captured probably form the most important factors in determining the temperature difference.In 14 codfish, where the rectal, blood, and muscle temperatures were recorded in the same individual, it was found to be highest in the muscle and lowest in the rectum, the mean temperature difference being 0°·46 C. for the muscle, 0°·41 C for the blood, and 0°·36 C. for the rectum.

The level of primary and secondary lipid per oxidation products were investigated: diene conjugates and malondialdehyde in conditions of nitrate loading. It was established that at bulls feeding with sodium nitrite at a dose of 0.2 hNO3ˉ/kg of body weight, the level of diene conjugates and malondialdehyde in their was increased during the entire the experiment. On the 30thday of the experiment the level of diene conjugates in blood of bull, which were conducted with nitrate load was 7.44 ± 0.15 mmol/l, and the level of malondialdehyde – 0.305 ± 0.014 mmol/l.Under conditions of nitrate load , young cattle was used a new integrated drug «Metisevit», which consists of sodium selenite, vitamin E and metifen. It was found the stimulating effect of metifen and metisevit on antioxidant system of the body of young cattle. Depressing effect of metifen and metisevit on the processes and lipid per oxidation in the blood of bulls under conditions of chronic nitrate–nitrite toxicity. Metifen and metisevit interact with radicals of fatty acids and delay the development of a chain reaction of oxidative stress, reduce the oxidation of phospholipids and form a biologically inactive compound with products of per oxidation of fats. Obtained results of the research indicate antioxidant drugs «Metisevit» and «Metifen» in the application of their young cattle.The mentioned changes are occurring through the comprehensive action of the drug components «Medisvit», that leads to the normalization of metabolic processes and free radical in the body of bulls. Obtained results of the research indicate the antioxidant action of the drugs «Metisevit» and «Metifen» in the application of their young cattle and the reasonableness of their administration to improve the antioxidant status of the organism according to nitrate loading.

The number of children swallowing magnetic foreign bodies has been a significantly high for the past decades, increasingly needing endoscopic or surgical interventions. Case report. In our observation, a 12-year-old girl swallowed magnetic balls from childrens designer 10 days prior to hospital admission. Foreign bodies (5 balls) were found during X-ray examination in the projection of the cecum. Conservative therapy carried out for 4 days had no success, thus colonoscopy was performed to remove foreign bodies. Foreign bodies were fixed to the intestinal wall, and attempts to separate them were unsuccessful. When a medical magnet was placed outside the body in the right iliac region, a chain of magnetic balls detached from the intestinal wall and made it possible to be captured in a trap loop and be removed. The girl avoided a laparotomy with an opening of the colon. Conclusion. External use of a medical magnet is effective for navigation and assistance during colonoscopic extraction when magnetic foreign bodies are found in the colon.

The pupa is bilaterally symmetrical, that is, setae occur in similar situations on each side of the body, so that it will suffice to describe the arrangement on one side only. The setae on the two sides of the same pupa, however, often vary as regards their sub-divisions, and similar variations occur between different individuals; as an example, in Table I are shown some of the variations that were found in ten pupae taken at random. An examination of a larger number would have revealed a wider range. As a rule, a seta which is sometimes single, sometimes divided, is longer when single. For example, in one pupa the seta at the posterior angle ofthe seventh segment was single on the right side, double on the left; the former measuring 266μ, and the latter only 159μ in length. This fact is not specifically mentioned in the descriptions which follow, but should be understood.

A rubber molecule containing n + 1 carbon atoms may be represented by a chain of n links of equal length such that successive links are at a fixed angle to each other but are otherwise at random. The statistical distribution of the length of the molecule, that is, the distance between the first and last carbon atoms, has been considered by various authors (Treloar (1) gives references). In particular, if the first atom is kept fixed at the origin of a system of coordinates and the chain is otherwise at random, it has been conjectured that the distribution of the (n + 1)th atom will tend, as n increases, towards a three-dimensional normal distribution of the formwhere σ depends on n. Thus r2 (= x2 + y2 + z2) will be approximately distributed as σ2χ2 with three degrees of freedom.

I was furnished with the particulars of the following case, through the kindness of James Thomson, Esq. of Primrose, near Clitheroe. John Chambers, aged 19, a carpenter at Clitheroe, in Lancashire, was in the habit, during the hot weather of July 1814, of refreshing himself whilst at work, by eating a quantity of unripe plums, of which, at various times, he ate several quarts, and generally swallowed the stones, under the erroneous notion entertained by the lower classes in that neighbourhood, that they would assist the digestion of the fruit. A fellow workman of Chambers, aged 30, pursued the same practice with impunity. Not so the unfortunate subject of this communication, who about Christmas began to complain, but still pursued his occupation and worked, with some interruption, till February 1815, when he applied to Mr. Coultate, of Clitheroe, for advice, complaining of pain in the abdomen attended with diarrhœa. The abdomen on examination felt tense but not much enlarged, nor had he any feverish symptoms. When in the workshop, he used to lean against the bench, pressing his stomach hard against it, which, he said, afforded him great relief. Medicines of an astringent nature were first prescribed, which seemed for a time to be of service, but the diarrhœa ere long increased, extreme emaciation took place, and a hard circumscribed tumour was discovered on one side of the abdomen, which, from the thinness of the abdominal parietes, Mr. Coultate could distinctly feel was an alvine concretion. Clysters were then administered, castor oil given, and the abdomen ordered to be rubbed with oil, under the idea of pushing the concretions forward, but in vain; the patient daily became more and more emaciated, and after about three months attendance he died, on the 6th of May, completely worn out. His appetite was good, or rather almost voracious, even to within a very short time of his death. He always felt himself worse after meals. His stools, especially for some weeks before he expired, were like blood and water. He was confined to his bed for about three weeks before he died. On opening the body, the concretions were found lodged in the arch of the colon, three closely compacted together, rather high up on the left side, the fourth considerably lower, approaching the termination of the colon. The coats of the intestine were much thickened and formed into a sort of pouch, where the concretions lay. The peritoneum was but little inflamed, the other viscera were healthy. The concretion which lay by itself was sawed asunder by Mr. Coultate, and contained a plum stone in the centre. The body was opened in the presence of the friends of the poor boy, and under circumstances which, unfortunately, prevented Mr. Coultate from making so minute an examination as he could have wished, and from pressure of business and other unavoidable interruptions, he did not at the time note down all the particulars of the case; but on referring to the prescriptions, he says that it does not appear that Chambers ever took the smallest quantity of calcined magnesia or its carbonate, during the whole of his attendance. He had frequent doses of sulphate of magnesia, castor oil, and rhubarb; and during the latter period of his illness opium was often administered. Chambers's usual diet was milk porridge twice a day, viz. at breakfast and supper; the milk thickened with oatmeal His dinner commonly consisted of meat and potatoes; he rarely took any other kind of vegetable, and always ate oat cake at his dinner. In the afternoon he ate oat bread, and cheese, and drank beer; so that he never took a single repast without oatmeal in some shape or other. During his illness he occasionally had oatmeal gruel, and sometimes a little beef or mutton broth, into which it is usual in Lancashire to throw, whilst preparing it, a spoonful or two of oatmeal. He was also requested at this period, to live a good deal on milk and vegetables.

We use this result to show that if Q is also substochastic, then it has the strong ratio limit property, that is for a suitable R and some R–1-harmonic function f and R–1-invariant measure µ. Under additional conditions µ can be taken as a probability measure on {1,2, …} and exists. An example shows that this limit may fail to exist if Q does not satisfy the restrictions imposed above, even though Q may have a minimal normalized quasi-stationary distribution (i.e. a probability measure µ for which R–1µ = µQ).The results have an immediate interpretation for Markov chains on {0,1,2, …} with 0 as an absorbing state. They give ratio limit theorems for such a chain, conditioned on not yet being absorbed at 0 by time n.

The ultrastructure of the metasomal body wall of the acanthocephalan Pomphorhynchus laevis has been studied.The cuticle was seen to be pierced by numerous pores leading into tubular channels of the striped layer which appeared to have connections with the endoplasmic reticulum deeper in the body wall. The inner edge of the body wall was perforated by a number of channels which, it was thought, might form the final link in a chain of ramifying channels leading from the exterior of the parasite to the pseudocoel. The syncytial cytoplasm of the body wall was thought to be supported by the network of strands forming the felt layer.
