Purpose Strengthening management capacity within the health care sector could have a significant impact on population health. However, many training programs in this area are still delivered using a classic lecture-based approach. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate and better understand the feasibility of using a problem-based learning (PBL) approach in health services management training programs. Design/methodology/approach A PBL teaching approach (based on the Maastricht University model) was tested with second-year postgraduate students from the Master in Public Health Management program at the Lithuanian University of Health Sciences. Students’ opinions about PBL were investigated using a questionnaire with eight open-ended questions. Thematic content analysis was chosen to reflect the search for patterns across the data. Findings Respondents stated that the main advantage of PBL was that it was a more interesting and effective way of learning: “It is easier to remember, when you study by yourself and discuss with all peers”. In addition, it was mentioned that PBL initiated a rapid exchange of ideas and sharing of personal experience. Students stressed that PBL was a good tool for developing other skills as well, such as “public speaking, communication, logic thinking”. All students recommended delivering all other courses in the health services management program using PBL methodologies. Originality/value Findings from our study suggest that PBL may be an effective approach to teaching health services management. Potential problems in implementation are noted.

Purpose – This study aims to deepen understanding of the use of stereoscopic 3D technology (stereo3D) in facilitating organizational learning. The emergence of advanced virtual technologies, in particular to the stereo3D virtual reality, has fundamentally changed the ways in which organizations train their employees. However, in academic or professional studies, there is hitherto, very limited research has been found in understanding the framework of distributed organizational learning in stereo3D virtual reality. Design/methodology/approach – The aim of this research is to investigate the employees’ learning achievement in both the conventional in-house training program and distributed organizational learning approach in a designed stereo3D virtual reality to deepen our understanding of this undiscovered framework. In all, 76 employees from local fashion and apparel organizations were recruited in this empirical study. The quasi-experimental method was adopted to compare the experimental and control groups. The criterion-referenced assessment scale was applied as a post-test to assess employees’ learning achievement in a customer service management training course. A tailor-made stereo3D virtual learning environment was established to conduct the virtual training program. Findings – Surprisingly, the results of this research found no significant difference in both the groups, which indicates that, nowadays, the two completely different learning formats have become similar in organizational learning practices. Originality/value – This research, therefore, suggests a new organizational learning framework with three components: a blended in-house training, a distributed enhancement program in stereo3D virtual reality and an organizational memory system.

Health service management education programs emerged in the early 1980s in China as a result of changing demands on health service managers created by new directions in health policy. This paper reports on an evaluation of the Jiangsu-Victoria Health Management Training Program and discusses five of the main findings. Participants in the study believed that the Program has impacted positively on the health management practice of Jiangsu Province, and has made a significant contribution to health services management education in China. However, certain areas in teaching practice need to be improved and participants in the study provided suggestions to achieve this. The study also found that there were limitations to the impact of managerial education due to administrative and environmental factors.

Managers of children's services often find themselves taking on responsibilities for which they have no training, and consequently they must learn the role on the job. To answer the need for management training, the Child Studies Department at the Canberra Institute of Technology developed a Graduate Certificate in Children's Service Management. The course aims to develop leadership and an ability to manage change in a field that must be responsive to rapidly changing ideas and requirements. This article focuses on leadership and change by looking at some theoretical ideas that are fundamental in the graduate certificate, and a director's application of those ideas to her service. Two voices interweave throughout the article: providing first a theoretical perspective and then an account of an actual experience of leadership in action.

Management and public health are important domains of competency for pharmacists. In about 90% of Brazilian health departments, pharmacists manage the selection and purchase of medicines. The Pharmaceutical Services and Access to Medicines Management Course (PSAMM) was offered to pharmacists working in the public health system. The aim of this study is to analyze the impacts of the course as perceived by the students (pharmacists). Two thousand five hundred pharmacists completed the course. It is a mixed-methods study, including subscribing forms (n = 2500), evaluation questionnaire (n = 1500), focus groups (n = 10), and semi-structured interviews (n = 31). Participants reported a high level of satisfaction with the course; they considered to have developed competencies related to leadership and management, competencies needed to enhance and sustain their practices in health services. Data analyses showed important barriers to complete the course: high course workload, poor quality of Internet access, lack of support from the health services. Participants highlighted crucial features of the course that helped them develop key competencies: practical in-service activities, useful and realistic contents, tutoring. These features helped participants overcome some important constraints described by them. The educational model described in this study was perceived as having a long-term impact on their behaviors and management practices in health services.
