Cooperation between libraries is time-consuming, but is both ‘worthwhile and essential. Scottish research libraries commenced active cooperation in 1977: the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries now has 15 active members. More recently, libraries in Scotland have been encouraged to work together following the creation of the Scottish Library and Information Council. The National Library has a key role to play, but in partnership with other libraries rather than invariably taking the lead. Cooperation between Scottish art libraries can be traced back to the 1950s and to the development, under the auspices of the National Library, of a union catalogue of art books in Edinburgh. This project is being extended and it will eventually become a national database. The group of libraries responsible for the project has taken on a wider role and an expanded membership as the Scottish Visual Arts Group, one of several subject groups under the umbrella of the Scottish Confederation of University & Research Libraries. The Group will work closely with the Scottish Library and Information Council, and with ARLIS/UK & Ireland in the wider framework of the United Kingdom. (This article is the revised text of a paper presented to the ARLIS/UK & Ireland 25th Anniversary Conference in London, 7th-10th April 1994).

This chapter reports the findings of a pilot research project that investigated how senior visual arts students engage with and utilise technology in the creation of art works during their program of study. During the course of a year, six students from two schools were interviewed and their work was visually documented to ascertain whether technology played a predominant part in their practice. Analysis of the interview data was framed within a social constructivist perspective and drew on notions of skills and expertise, support, access, awareness and inspiration. The findings revealed that the senior visual arts students regularly used technology as part of their process but often reverted to using traditional media with some technological aspects in the creation of their final work.

The article is devoted to the artistic legacy of Merited Artist of the Republic of Bashkortostan Talgat Masalimov — painter, graphic artist and master of decorative applied art. his work is examined in the article in the context of the processes taking place in the contemporary visual arts, marked with an exploration of new plastic means. The authors regard the legacy of Masalimov as a vivid example of the simultaneous infl uence of folk art, its symbolism and graphic structure, Eastern (Turkic) traditions and those of the Russian avant-garde with its aspiration towards primitive, laconic, conditional forms. The article cites examples among works of the artist created in the technique of graphics, pastel and artistic felt. At the core of the creation of these works lies the knowledge of principles of construction of the composition and depictive techniques characteristic for the Russian avant-garde and Early Russian icon-painting and Iranian miniatures, with an absence of direct associations with any concrete epoch or artistic direction. The authors see in the work of the artist a vivid example of the preservation and expansion of the heritage of the past, its development and enrichment by means of contemporary plastic arts.

The creation of co-operative networks for sharing information has been one of the most significant advances of recent decades in Cuba; they have been set up in various areas of knowledge in order to solve the problems caused by the increasing accumulation of data, images, ideas, information and objects. The difficulties faced daily by libraries and their users in accessing this information have led to groups of libraries working together and sharing information, goals and users. But visual arts librarians have not yet formalised a network of this sort, although preliminary analysis has shown the benefits of such co-operation.

Filippo Tommaso Marinetti was founder and leader of Futurism, the first intellectual and artistic movement that explicitly defined the codes of avant-garde practice in the twentieth century. His work extended across a multiplicity of fields: journalism, poetry, literature, theater, visual arts, politics, but it’s probably his all-encompassing activity as a cultural leader and fosterer of innovation that made him one of the preeminent intellectuals of his time. He implemented and systematized the practice of diffusing avant-garde ideas through manifestos, performances, and happenings, capitalizing on a deliberately magnified antagonistic relation with the tastes of the public at large. His experimentations in visual/verbal relations and stage performances, which led to the creation of free-word poetry and synthetic theater, were pivotal for the development of new modernist codes in poetry and the performing arts.

This article addresses the Tropicalist movement, the iconic Brazilian countercultural phenomenon from the late 1960s. The discussion focuses on its main visual manifestation: graphic design. We aim to demonstrate that the work of graphic designer Rogério Duarte is one of the structural pillars of this anti-establishment movement. Tropicália is often associated with music, while other contributions such as graphic design are less known or taken as a later visual response. We propose and present an analysis of the role of Duarte at the creation of the movement and its development during the late 1960s and early 1970s. His critical vision and knowledge of the Brazilian cultural mosaic led to the construction of one of widest countercultural movements of the 20th century, with a range of manifestations that included not only graphic design and music, but also theatre, cinema, and the visual arts. Tropicália was indeed more political than the American and British psychedelic manifestations, in which it was visually inspired. It was also more than a cultural movement or an anti-academic manifestation: it was a means to criticize and work around the Brazilian government and its oppression.

As a concept, the idea of product branding offers insights into the history of uniform in Britain. The creation of a brand, by which a product is understood and recognised by its name, fits the cultural history of the red coat, that part of his uniform by which the British infantryman was known for over three hundred years. While the earliest references to the redcoat in this context occur in the sixteenth century, it is really from the eighteenth century onwards that the term becomes widely employed to denote the soldier. However, a review of royal portraiture in Britain from the late seventeenth century onwards also reveals that monarchs used the red coat as a way of uniting the ideals of patriotism with the monarch — a device that was particularly important for the Hanoverian dynasty. Both literature and the visual arts helped identify the red coat as a synonym for the soldier. Numerous references may be adduced, from Jane Austen writing of polite society, to Rudyard Kipling's Tommy. Lady Elizabeth Butler was perhaps the most famous artist to depict red-coated heroes in battles, which marked the defence or development of the Empire.

The purpose of the article is to identify the features of the genre ofUkrainian choral miniature and to identify the basic principles of theirimplementation in the choral works by Lesya Dychko. The purpose of thework determines the relevant tasks, which are in identifying the genrestyle landmarks of the musical language of L. Dichko, available in selectedchoral miniatures for poetic texts and, based on their analysis, outline anumber of immanent features inherent in the creativity of the composer. The methods of the research is formed by the using of empiricalapproaches of scientific investigation, namely observations, analyzes and generalizations, which allow the practical implementation of this studyingthemetic destination. The textological and semantic analytical approachesof the poetic text are also used in the work. The scientific novelty of thearticle is determined by the factor of primacy of the complex analysis ofselected choral miniatures from the standpoint of revealing immanentgenre-stylistic traits of L. Dychko’s creativity. Conclusions. The analysisof choral miniatures „Winter”, „Na chovni”, „Spring” on poetic textsallows to classify them as extremely bright, artistically expressiveexamples of modern interpretation of the genre with a relief display ofnationally characteristic stylistic features, which can be considered as anexample of the synthesis of neo-folklore neo-romantic orientation ofcreativity of L. Dychko. The choir miniature of Lesya Dychko is nowfirmly in the repertoire of numerous choirs of Ukraine. The composerforms a comprehensive outlook model of being in interaction with creativethinking. Her vision of the artistic text takes place at the same time in thedimension of literature, music and painting due to the constantinvolvement of elements of the visual arts vocabulary in her works, orientation to „painting”, and work with poetic images.

Abstract: This paper addresses reflections from my research when using letter-writing as an arts-based method for exploring curriculum implications within an alternative educational program in a Montreal inner-city high school. The participants, comprised of the program’s students as well as its administrators and teachers, informed the research by shedding light on their experiences of the teaching and learning that occurs in such setting. By combining the literary and visual arts, the study participants explored the theme of identity through the creation of letters, and visual arts responses. As a result of this work, I employ letter-writing in this paper to address the critical and pedagogic discourses experienced and support for a call to shift educational paradigms.
