Do Managerial Incentives Drive Cost Behavior? Evidence about the Role of the Zero Earnings Benchmark for Labor Cost Behavior in Private Belgian Firms

ABSTRACT This study investigates the influence of managerial incentives to meet or beat the zero earnings benchmark on labor cost behavior of private Belgian firms. We posit that relative to managers of firms reporting healthy profits, managers meeting or beating the zero earnings benchmark will increase labor costs to a smaller extent when activity increases and decrease labor costs to a larger extent when activity decreases. This should take the form of more symmetric labor cost behavior for firms that report a small profit. Our findings are consistent with this prediction. Using detailed employee data, we show that managers of firms reporting a small profit focus on firing employees who are relatively low cost to fire. To protect their reputation in the labor market, managers of other firms, particularly those reporting healthy profits, limit the numbers of dismissals and react to activity changes by changing the number of hours that employees work. As the costs of employee benefits have escalated, labor cost control to enhance product market competitiveness has become a more critical organizational concern. However, benefits which are an element of compensation have remained a relatively neglected topic in the area of strategic human resource management. This paper explores the role of employee benefits in effective strategy implementation. Three core characteristics of employee benefits practices: timing, benefit level and employee-employer relationship, are described on continuum of choices. Examples of various employee benefits practices are linked to low-cost leadership and differentiation strategies.

A growing literature suggests that noncognitive abilities are important determinants of earnings. But empirical research on nonwage labor market outcomes is still limited due to data availability. In this paper, we collect employer-employee linked data from six former socialist countries and estimate three noncognitive abilities: adherence to work ethic, the preference for challenge versus affiliation, and locus of control, and their relationship with workers’ supervisory status and promotions. We find that these noncognitive abilities are strong predictors of the likelihood of being a supervisor and being promoted as well as the number of supervisees and promotions. We also study the role of noncognitive abilities in the gender gap in these labor market outcomes. Based on a Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition, gender differences in these noncognitive abilities can explain a modest proportion of the gender gap in supervisory status and promotions.

The main goal of agriculture is to obtain products, but its processing is no less important. At processing enterprises, grinding and cutting are the most important technological process. (Research purpose) The research purpose is in analyzing the market of knives of processing machines, their pricing, resource and describing the economic efficiency of applying strengthening coatings. (Materials and methods) Authors used a digital method of searching through the Internet for enterprises that produce knives for processing machines, types of knives and their characteristics. (Results and discussion) Specialized knives are used for grinding products in the industrial plants. Since knives are a consumable item, the technology of their replacement is subject to requirements for the simplicity of the process, low cost and low labor cost. These requirements, together with the specific ones determined by the technology, form the design of the knives. The efficiency of the processing machine directly depends on the state of its working organs. Replacement of worn-out elements is accompanied by large labor costs, which leads to a decrease in labor productivity and to downtime of equipment in repair, and ultimately − to a decrease in the profit of the enterprise. (Conclusions) The hardening of knives by the borating method using high-frequency heating will increase the productivity of agricultural machinery and will give an economic effect up to 0.32 billion rubles due to an increase in the resource and a lower cost of manufacturing hardened knives compared to imported ones. By reducing the cost of domestic knives, you can get savings on one knife of 1960 rubles, provided that you refuse to purchase imported knives.

The article gives an analysis of the current state of the hop-growing industry as a whole across Russia and the Chuvash Republic. Chuvashia remains the most promising region for the development of the hop-growing industry in Russia, where industrial production and a unique collection of hop varieties are preserved. The role of Chuvash Scientific and Research Institute of Agriculture and Chuvash State Agricultural Academy in the development of the hop-growing industry is substantiated. The level of energy supply in domestic hop-growing is described, which lags far behind the foreign ones. It was revealed that one of the reasons for the low profitability of the hop-growing industry is insufficient mechanization of work on the main technological operations. Used machines for hops cultivation using existing technology do not provide at the proper level of performance not only of modern advanced technologies, but also of fully existing technologies. Recommended ways to raise the branch of hop-growing on the basis of the introduction into production of modern highly efficient low-cost machine technologies. An improved technology for producing hops and machines for its implementation is proposed, which makes it possible to significantly reduce material and labor costs, as well as increase hop yields.

ABSTRACT This study investigates how manager and auditor incentives, along with audit committee characteristics, are associated with materiality judgments about detected misstatements. Using data on detected misstatements that occurred between 2003 and 2006, we find auditors' incentives to protect their reputations weaken the effect of managerial incentives associated with the pressure created by analyst following; auditors are less likely to allow managers to waive material misstatements as audit fees increase. Regarding audit committee characteristics, results reveal that audit committees with greater financial expertise are less likely to allow managers to waive material misstatements compared to audit committees with less expertise. Fruits and vegetables are foods that come into contact with various types of microorganisms from planting to their consumption. A lack or poor sanitation of these products after harvest can cause high losses due to deterioration and/ or pathogenic microorganisms. There are practically no post-harvest fungicides or bactericides with a broad spectrum of action that have no toxic residual effects and are safe. However, to minimize such problems, the use of sanitizers is an efficient device against these microorganisms. Chlorine is the most prevalent sanitizing agent because of its broad spectrum, low cost and well-established practices. However, the inevitable formation of disinfection by-products, such as trihalomethanes (THMs) and haloacetic acids (HAAs), is considered one of the main threats to food safety. Alternative sanitizers, such as chlorine dioxide (ClO2) and ozone, are becoming popular as a substitute for traditional post-harvest treatments. Thus, this review addresses the use of chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone emphasizing aspects, such as usage, safe application, spectrum of action and legislation. In order to ensure the quality and safety of final products, the adoption of well-prepared sanitation and sanitation programs for post-harvest fruits and vegetables is essential.
