The article deals with the modern Ukrainian urbanistic nomination as a constituent of active language processes. From the standpoint of general linguistics functional and semantic nature of urbanonym, its place and role in different discourses, the sociolinguistic phenomenon of renaming (on the example of Kyiv urbanonymy) are examined. In the context of ideas of reference analysis and semantics of syntax an urbanonym is characterized as a unit of an identifying type of meaning (as opposed to units of a predicate type of meaning), to which a close connection between a denotatum and a name, as well as the use in an utterance with the referential function is peculiar. It is shown that the functioning of an urbanistic nomination in oral discourse is determined, first of all, by the pragmatic factor, the speaker’s knowledge of the relationship between the denotatum and its name, his cultural background and experience of living in a certain urban space and by the need for orientation in it. In written speech, the urbanistic nomination is presented in reference and informational, media, historical-topographic, and fiction discourses, in which it has various functions, in particular, the function of identifying an individual or legal entity in juridical texts and other texts of a documentary type. The active sociolinguistic processes in which the urbanonyms are involved find an imprint in modern fiction discourse in the creation of non-standard syntactic constructions and the use of unofficial urbanistic nominations within the frame of language game. The practice of renaming is analyzed in the aspect of reference analysis, in connection with which two types of linguocultural situations are distinguished, due to the correlation between the transformation of the urban object (denotatum) and the change of name. It is shown that in the modern Ukrainian practice of renaming, there is a steady tendency towards the introduction of an additional predicate semantic component into the meaning of an urbanonym. It is concluded that the current functioning of the urbanonym is subordinated to the mechanisms that operate in the different discursive practices.

Abstract Using the network analysis method, the third level of the agenda-setting proposes that the associations between the elements on the media agenda are transferred to the public agenda. Focusing on five health issues in Turkey, this paper proposes a new perspective to third level researches. A media agenda content analysis was conducted on 13 nationwide and five local newspapers for six months and at the end of it, a public agenda survey on 400 people was conducted in Aydın, a city in Turkey. Findings show that there is a significant similarity between all the diseases chosen as a sample and taken from the newspapers and the public agenda network. The high correlation has been ranked in descending areas as: AIDS, cancer, obesity, diabetes and blood pressure. The concepts of “need for orientation” and “obtrusive and unobtrusive issues” may serve as explanations for these findings.

The evolution of agenda setting over the past 50 years is an in-depth, large-scale case study of the scientific method. This oscillating history of theoretical explication and extensive empirical investigation has identified major aspects of the language of journalism that have significant impact on the formation of public opinion. The theory of agenda setting now includes three levels of agenda setting effects, intermedia agenda setting and the concept of compelling arguments that identify key aspects of the language of journalism. Other theoretical concepts, need for orientation, and most recently civic osmosis and agendamelding explicate the process of agenda setting. All of these are intellectual tools for dealing with the contemporary problem of fake news.

Nineteenth century Britain was an age of rapid technological, political and societal change. This was also reflected in the media: Industrially-produced print media opened a mass market with publications for almost any (niche-) interest one could think of. The societal changes also resulted in a growing need for orientation which in many publications was answered using the semantics of the heroic. As guiding figures, heroes were supposed to offer role models for a variety different readerships. By analysing Chambers’s Journal, Fraser’s Magazine and Leisure Hour, this study analyses different conceptions of the heroic on the Victorian print market and shows how the heroic was used for different didactic, social and political purposes in addressing different readerships within the context of changing power structures.

New student orientation programs typically have been developed from the perspective of what new students need upon their arrival on a 4-year college campus. There is little consideration given to the environment from which students come, namely, the secondary and high schools from which students graduate. The current study study explores what secondary school administrators perceive to be the most important elements that should be included in an orientation program. This perspective, which largely supports the inclusion of all the Council for the Advancement of Standards' Standards for New Student Orientation, particularly noted the need for orientation programs to help the student identify the personal and financial costs (and benefits) of attending college.
