Настоящая статья содержит многослойное издание Четырех времен года Коста Левановича Хетагурова, входящих в сборник стихотворений Осетинская лира ( Ирон фндыр ). Воспроизведение текста предусматривает, наряду с основным осетинским подлинником, сопровожденным английским и русским подстрочниками, фонетическую транскрипцию согласно международному фонетическому алфавиту, англоязычную морфосинтаксическую глоссу и перевод на итальянский язык. Итальянский перевод придерживается по возможности оригинала и, следовательно, никак не претендует на качественную передачу его метрической структуры и поэтической образности в примечаниях объясняются на итальянском языке некоторые грамматические или лексические особенности осетинского текста. Таким образом, в совместной работе трех исследователей представлены свежие материалы для ознакомления более широкого круга читателей с творчеством великого осетинского поэта и для его дальнейшего изучения. The present paper features a multi-layered edition of the Four seasons of Kosta Levanovich Khetagurov, included in the collection of poems named Ossetian lyre (Iron fandyr). Along with the main Ossetian text, accompanied by an English and Russian interlinear, the edition features a phonetic transcription according to the International Phonetic Alphabet, an English morphosyntactic gloss and a translation into Italian. The Italian translation adheres to the original as close as possible and, therefore, cannot claim in any way to qualitatively convey its metric structure and poetic imagery the notes explain some grammatical or lexical features of the Ossetian text. Thus, the joint work of three researchers offers most recent materials in order to familiarize a wider circle of readers with the work of the great Ossetian poet and for its further study.

The production of phonological patterns is a very complicated process especially when alveolar consonant sounds are pronounced in International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The toddlers ageing 2-3 years as well as the language handicaps find it more complicated to cope with this sound process. The present study on toddlers aims at investigating the alveolar consonant sounds in keeping with single word production. The Iowa Test of Consonant Perception by Jason Geller was implemented to investigate sound productions in the perspective of Substitution Process proposed by Burnthal and Rankson (2004). Non-probabilistic Sample of twenty-five toddlers was given 125 words; a five-word set to every toddler to pronounce repeating at least five times at the top of his voice the articulators at length. Data was collected by means of informants’ close observations. The comparison between the pronunciation of original words and that of produced words with their phonetic transcription provided evidence of the shift in alveolar sound patterns during the phonological process by the toddlers. The results implicated that the toddlers made good use of articulators with ease and without any special training. They simplified the complicated consonant sound patterns at their own convenience. The study will be equally beneficial for speech pathologists, linguistic scholars, and keen phonology learners.

Students begin graduate school with a wide range of knowledge and disparate levels of skill established in undergraduate education and/or prerequisite courses. This study evaluated an online learning module for ensuring basic phonetic transcription knowledge and skill in matriculating graduate students. Students' knowledge of International Phonetic Alphabet symbols and their skill transcribing familiar and unfamiliar words improved after completing module activities, and gains maintained in the absence of module activities. Knowledge and skill discrepancies diminished between students who had previously taken a phonetics class and students who had not. Online learning may be a viable solution for ensuring foundational knowledge in speech-language pathology graduate students.

Proses pentranskripsian teks menggunakan pencatatansecara fonetik dengansistem International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). Hasil transkripsi dan terjemahan kemudiandiolah dengan komputer menggunakan program shoebox untuk menghasilkan database daninterlinear text. Hasil penlitian sebagai berikut. Pertama, kearifan lokal teknologi tangkapikan tradisional (acar, paca”, ginte”, mukat, jala, tubay, dan bubu). Kedua, kearifan lokaladat berladang dan bergotong royong (nunuw, kemaraw, tugal, nugal, bantun, mantun, dangutung-ruyung). Ketiga, kearifan lokal menyabung ayam dan bermain gasing (rabuYK danpaKkT”). This paper is written through descriptive method or library research to discuss the use of phonetic transcription in the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL) using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). The first part describes the theoretical framework of the transcription basics. Then, the next part discusses the advantages of the phonetic transcription. This is followed by an illustration of understanding basic speech sounds. Some ideas of preparing classroom materials using the IPA are addressed in the next section. The main focus of this chapter is to present the articulatory description of English consonants and provide practical guidance on how to teach the consonant phonemes to ELLs. The chapter starts with the introduction of phonetics as a subfield of linguistics. The concepts such as phonemes, contrastive versus non-contrastive sounds, the branches of phonetics that study different aspects of human speech sounds, and two different types of phonemes—consonants and vowels—are introduced in this section. Next, the reader is familiarized with the International Phonetic Alphabet, which is a system of phonetic transcription. The chapter further presents the description of the vocal tract and explores the classification of English consonants according to their place and manner of articulation, and voicing. Some implications from the introduced phonetics theory for teaching phonics, phonemic awareness, and spelling to young ELLs, and pronunciation to adult English learners, as well as a set of recommendations for effective phonetics instruction for ELLs are discussed to conclude the chapter.

The main purpose of this article is to understand better the phonology of a region/socioeconomic variety of English based on two recording from the International Dialects of English Archieve website (IDEA). As Hansen, Yapanel, Huang, & Ikeno (2004) state, “Every individual develops a characteristic speaking style at an early age that depends heavily on his language environment (i.e., the native language), as well as the region where the language is spoken” (p.1). In this study, we want to analyze how the speaker’s pronunciation of English sounds is different from the English we know (American English) and how their intonation differs from the intonation patterns with which we are familiar. Finally, we want to analyze if the speaker’s profile (age, education, gender, experience with English, and socioeconomic background) influence in their English pronunciation. For this study, we transcribed the recording in a written and a phonetic form using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) and then we conducted a comparative analysis.KEYWORDS: Dialect analysis, Standard, English, Phonetic transcription

IPAtranscriptor is a tool for creating narrow phonetic transcriptions. As it connects to the computer's default text-to-speech engine on demand, the program can be used not only by sighted but also by partially sighted and blind individuals. Sighted users can choose whether they prefer the mouse or the keyboard as their input device. In contrast to other programs, the full set of symbols and diacritics of the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) is implemented and users can produce very narrow phonetic transcriptions as they can insert up to three diacritics above and three diacritics below each IPA symbol to modify it. Furthermore, the program can facilitate the collaboration between blind and sighted phoneticians (or students of linguistics in general) since they can easily exchange their phonetic transcriptions. A conversion of the transcriptions is not necessary as all transcribers can use the same system regardless of their visual abilities. IPAtranscriptor is freely available online and is believed to be the first audio-based program for narrow phonetic transcription that can be used by blind and sighted phoneticians.
