Indonesia is classified as a tropical region with rainfall data ranging from medium to high. This has become one of the causes of frequent flooding. Bengkulu which is one of the provinces in Indonesia, has a topography that is at an elevation of 0-16 meters above sea level with 70% flat topography and 30% small hilly. Swamp area dominates the lowlands so that it cannot optimally absorb water into the soil. This study identifies areas with potential flooding using data obtained through Landsat 8 and processes them using the NDVI and NDWI methods. NDVI detected and classified a map into five classifications; dry land with red colour, scarce vegetation with yellow pigment, sparse vegetation with soft green colour, solid vegetation with a dark green colour. Meanwhile, NDWI classified into 3 categories; medium wetness with a brown colour, dry land with beige colour and high wet area with a blue colour.

Abstract Landscape dynamics is the result of interactions between social systems and the environment, these systems evolving significantly over time. climatic conditions and biophysical phenomena are the main factors of landscape dynamics. Also, currently man is responsible for most changes affecting natural ecosystems. The objective of this work is to study the dynamics of a typical landscape of western Algeria in time and space, and to map the distribution of vegetation groups constitute the vegetation cover of this ecosystem. as well as using a method of monitoring the state of a fragile ecosystem by remote sensing to understand the processes of changes in this area. The steppe constitutes a large arid area, with little relief, covered with low and sparse vegetation. it lies between the annual isohyets of 100 to 400 mm, subjected to a very old human exploitation with an activity of extensive breeding of sheep, goats, and camels. Landsat satellite data were used to mapping vegetation groups in the Mecheria Steppe at a scale of 1: 300,000. Then, a comparison was made between the two maps obtained by a classification of Landsat-8 sensor Operational Land Imager (OLI) acquired on March 18, 2014, and Landsat-5 sensor Thematic Mapper (TM) acquired on April 25, 1987. The results obtained show the main changes affecting the natural distribution of steppe species, a strong change in land occupied by the Stipa tenacissima steppe with 65% of change, this steppe is replaced by Thymelaea microphylla, Salsola vermiculata, lygeum spartum and Peganum harmala steppe. an absence from the steppe Artemisia herba-alba that has also been replaced by the same previous steppes species. The groups with Quercus ilex and Juniperus phoenicea are characterized by a strong regression that was lost 60% of its global surface and transformed by steppe to stipa tenacissima and bare soil.

The present paper deals with the retrieval of the atmospheric layer averaged relative humidity profiles using data from the Microwave Humidity Sounder (MHS) onboard the MetOp satellite. The retrieval has been innovatively performed by firstly retrieving humidity for pairs of thick overlapping layers (TOLs) used subsequently to derive humidity for associated thin isolated layer (TIL). A water vapour dependent (WVD) algorithm has been developed and applied to infer the humidity of TOLs. Thus, the retrieved profiles have been finally compared with standard algorithm (NORM). These algorithms have been developed based on radiative transfer simulations and study of sensitivities of MHS channels on humidity of various types of layers (TOL, TIL). The algorithm has been tested with MHS data and validated using concurrent radiosonde as well as NCEP reanalysis data indicating profile errors of ~15% and ~19%, respectively.

After the reading of the note on chlorophyll at the meeting of the society on December 13th, I was reminded by Professor Stokes that e and others had succeeded in separating the complex to which the erm chlorophyll had previously been applied into two substances, or ather groups of substances, one characterised by its green colour and ed fluorescence, the other showing a more distinctly yellow colour without fluorescence, and he suggested to me that it would be advisable to ascertain whether the property of yielding glucose by decomposition with acids might not belong to one of these substances or groups of substances only. Professor Stokes at the same time kindly communicated to me the details of the process whereby he succeeded n effecting the separation referred to, a process depending on the action of carbon disulphide in' removing some of the bodies contained n an alcoholic solution of crude chlorophyll in preference to others. The process employed for the same purpose by Mr. Sorby is essentially the same. Before applying disulphide of carbon to an alcoholic extract of green leaves according to the process of Professor Stokes, it was necessary first to remove the ready-formed glucose, tannin, and other matters soluble in water, which almost always exist in such extracts, and which would by their presence have rendered the result of the experiment quite uncertain. This was done in the way I have already described. An ethereal solution of chlorophyll prepared by my method was evaporated, and the residue having been dissolved in alcohol, the solution was mixed with a quantity of carbon disulphide larger than the alcohol would dissolve, and the mixture well shaken. The carbon disulphide acquired a dark green colour, while the supernatant alcoholic liquid, containing principally the xanthophyll of Professor Stokes and Mr. Sorby, was yellow with a tinge of green. The two liquids having been separated, the lower dark green one was washed several times with alcohol to remove any of the xanthophyll that might still be present, and having then been mixed with a large quantity of alcohol, a current of air was passed through it to remove the excess of carbon disulphide as directed by Professor Stokes. In this way I obtained two liquids, one intensely green, the other deep yellow with only a tinge of green. The two liquids were found to contain substances essentially different so far as regards their products of decomposition with acids. The yellow liquid having been mixed with dilute sulphuric acid was evaporated in the waterbath, water being added during evaporation, until the liquid had lost nearly all its colour. A quantity of yellow fatty matter separated during evaporation, and this having been filtered off the liquid was found to contain an abundance of glucose. The yellow fatty matter insoluble in water, dissolved easily in alcohol, but the yellow solutio showed none of the characteristic absorption bands of “acid chloro phyll.” The dark green liquid, treated in exactly the same way yielded a dark green product insoluble in water. The filtrate Iron this gave a slight reaction with Fehling’s solution, but so trifling comparatively that I am inclined to attribute it to the presence o some substance not completely removed from the disulphide of carboi solution by washing with alcohol. The dark green product of tin action of acid insoluble in water was soluble, though with difficultyin boiling alcohol, the solution being dull green and showing the absorption bands due to “acid chlorophyll.” If, therefore, chloro phyll be defined as the constituent of the green parts of plants, which gives a spectrum showing the well-known bands at the red end, and yields by decomposition with acids the product or products going by the name of “acid chlorophyll,” of which Fremy’s phyllocyanin is the most important and most characteristic, then chlorophyll is not a glucoside. The glucoside which accompanies it and resembles it as regards solubility in various menstrua may have to be sought among the group of bodies to which the generic name of xanthophyll has been applied.

Forests have important roles in terms of carbon storage and other values. Various studies have been conducted to identify and distinguish the forest from non-forest classes. Several forest types classes such as secondary forests and plantations should be distinguished related to the restoration and rehabilitation program for dealing with climate change. The study was carried out to distinguish several classes of important forests such as the primary dryland forests, secondary dryland forest, and plantation forests using Landsat 8 to develop identification techniques of specific forests classes. The study areas selected were forest areas in three districts, namely Karo, Dairi, and Samosir of North Sumatera Province. The results showed that using composite RGB 654 of Landsat 8 imagery based on test results OIF for the forest classification, the forests could be distinguished with other land covers. Digital classification can be combined with the visual classification known as a hybrid classification method, especially if there are difficulties in border demarcation between the two types of forest classes or two classes of land covers.

Abstract. Two-layer parameterisation of the surface energy budget proves to be realistic for sparse but homogeneously distributed vegetation. For semi-arid land surfaces however, sparse vegetation is usually interspersed by large patches of unshaded bare soil which may interact directly with the atmosphere with little interference with the vegetation. Therefore such surfaces might not be realistically represented by a two-layer parameterisation. The objective of this study is to investigate the issue of representing water and energy transfer processes in arid and semi-arid regions. Two different surface schemes, namely the classic two layer (one-compartment) approach and a two adjacent compartment ("mosaic") approach are used. The performance of both schemes is documented using data sets collected over two sparsely vegetated surfaces in the San Pedro river basin: homogeneously distributed grassland and heterogeneously distributed shrubs. In the latter case the mosaic scheme seems to be more realistic given the quality of the temperature estimates. But no clear statement can be made on the efficiency of both schemes for the total fluxes. Over each site, we investigate the possibility of artificially modifying some of the surface parameters in order to get the surface fluxes simulated by the one-compartment scheme to reproduce the two-compartment ones. The "cost" associated with this process in terms of surface temperature estimates is eventually discussed.

Bangli Regency is one of Regency in the Bali Province. The total area of  Bangli Regency is 52,081 hectares (9.24%) of total area of Bali Province (563,666 ha). The Growth and the development of the region Bangli Regency the positive impacts on the economy of the community, and the negative impacts on the environment. Land use change is one of the negative issue of development Bangli Regency. This study conduted the calculation of land use change from 1997 to 2014 using Landsat data in Bangli Regency. Landsat 5 TM, Landsat 7 ETM+ and Landsat 8 OLI/TIRS imageries were used to determine the land use map based, on using supervised classification method. The field data set the nine classes were classtuded based, on the classification were fresh water, bare land, forest, residential, bushes, irrigated paddy field, non irrigated paddy field, dry land and plantation. There results showed in land use changes from 1997 to 2014 that plantation increased (19,486.33 ha (36.89%)), and residential increased (1,872.00 ha (3.47%)), there is also a vast to reduction in dry land  (-10,868.90 ha (-21.21%)), forest (-6,333.34 ha (-12.24%)), irrigated paddy field (-1,619.50 ha (-3.17%)), bushes (-1,637.30 ha (-3.27%)), bare land (-63.00 ha (-0.17%)), non irrigated paddy field (-113.59 ha ( -0.26%)) and fresh water (-2.70 ha (-0.05%). The results accuracy rate was 89.45%. Anslyse of land use showed that the significant decrease of plantation area in Bangli Regency hill due to rapid development of infrastrusture of tourism and extensive residential area has increased particularly in sub district of the Kintamani District.

The aim of this study was to evaluate some parameters of water quality of semiarid reservoirs under different uses and occupation of the catchment’s soil. For this, the reservoirs Acauã and Boqueirão, belonging to the Paraíba do Norte river watershed and Middle and Upper course sub catchments, respectively, were studied. For this, water samples were collected in August, September and October 2016. From these samples, total and dissolved phosphorus, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia, chlorophyll, dissolved and suspended solids were analyzed. In addition, images of the Landsat 8 satellite were acquired for the calculation of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and for the supervised classification of the use and occupation of the sub catchments. Thus, it was observed that, in general, the Acauã reservoir presented values of phosphorus and nitrogen and solids larger than the Boqueirão reservoir, due to the greater urban area, even though it had a smaller total area of the basin. Both reservoirs presented low vegetation rates and high areas of sparse vegetation and exposed soil, increasing the propensity to soil erosion and the transport of nutrients from the basin to the reservoirs, making water quality worse or impossible.

Changes in land use and land cover are the result of complex interactions between humans and their environment. This study examines land use and land cover changes in the Lower Neretva Region between 1990 and 2020. Political and economic changes in the early 1990s resulted in changes in the landscape, both directly and indirectly. Multispectral image processing was used to create thematic maps of land use and land cover for 1990, 2005, and 2020. Satellite images from Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 were the main source of data. Land use and land cover structure was assessed using a hybrid approach, combining unsupervised and manual (visual) classification methods. An assessment of classification accuracy was carried out using a confusion matrix and kappa coefficient. According to the results of the study, the percentage of built-up areas increased by almost 33%. Agricultural land and forests and grasslands also increased, while the proportion of swamps and sparse vegetation areas decreased.

Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) integrated with the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was adopted to estimate the rate of annual soil loss in Afikpo South Local Government. This is important due to the fact that agriculture is the main source of livelihood in the area. The RUSLE factors were computed using data such as rainfall from NIMET, Soil from FAO, elevation from SRTM and Landsat 8 OLI from USGS. The data were used as input in a GIS environment and the annual soil loss was generated using the RUSLE equation. The result shows that the average annual soil loss ranges from 0 to 155, 858 ha/ton/yr. It was also observed that soil erosion was predominant in the southern part of Afikpo South LGA due to the presence of steep slopes in the area. The study serves as preliminary documentation for planning, conservation and management of soil resources in the Local Government.
