Threats to animal and plant health by invading organisms are increasing due to trade liberalisation and increased movement of goods and people. This paper conceptualises an economic approach to protecting plant health against invasive organisms, specifically addressing a multidisciplinary audience involved in plant health research and in governmental policy-making process. We discuss the conceptual framework and present some generally available management options. We also build a basic model dealing with pre-emptive and reactive control, followed by a numerical illustration to the case of Colorado potato beetle in Finland. The analysis undertaken supports the notion that pre-emptive control is a viable strategy. Reactive control should be considered only if very low invasion magnitude combines with a low level of damage. However, the strategy choice implies also distributional impacts that warrant attention. The analysis results in a solution for a given set of numbers only. Uncertainty is incorporated through sensitivity analysis. The approach presented demonstrates the basic economic thinking behind the issue, and the concepts described allow further development of more sophisticated forms of analysis.;

The Colorado potato beetle,Leptinotarsa decemlineata(Say) Order Coleoptera and the potato leafhopper,Empoasca fabae(Harris) Order Homoptera, are the major insect pests of potato in eastern North America. In two years of field trials, we compared the effectiveness of three pest management options for the control of Colorado potato beetle and potato leafhopper: natural host plant resistance (glandular trichomes), engineered resistance (Bacillus thuringiensis[Bt] Berlinercry3Agene) and a susceptible potato cultivar (Superior) with an at-planting application of the insecticide thiamethoxam. Similar and acceptable control of the Colorado potato beetle larvae was obtained with theBt-cry3Alines and the thiamethoxam treated “Superior” variety. The glandular trichome cultivar had significantly less Colorado potato beetle damage than did the untreated “Superior” in 2004, although damage was significantly greater than in theBt-cry3Alines and the insecticide-treated potatoes for both years, and was the only treatment that consistently had very little potato leafhopper damage. These data demonstrate that although each type of host plant resistance mechanism (Bt-cry3Aor glandular trichomes) was as effective as the chemical control against one of the insects, neither provides adequate resistance to both Colorado potato beetle and potato leaf hopper.

Continence difficulties affect the lives of a substantial minority of the population. Women are far more likely than men to be affected by urinary incontinence but the range of management options for them is limited. There has been considerable interest in developing an external urine collection system for women but without success to date. This paper describes the development and preliminary clinical testing of an active urine collection device (AUCD), which could provide a solution for sufferers. The device uses stored vacuum, protected by a high bubble point filter, to remove urine as quickly as it is produced. This allows a small battery-operated pump to provide the required vacuum, enabling the device to be portable. Two different types of non-invasive patient/device interface were developed, and tested by volunteers: urinal and small pad. The slimline urinal was popular with users although liquid noise was a problem. The pad interface was successful on occasions but further work is necessary to produce a reliable pad. This study has successfully demonstrated that a prototype AUCD liquid handling system can remove urine at clinically relevant flowrates. While further development is required, volunteer tests have shown that the AUCD could be a useful advance in continence management.

The article provides a systematic analysis of the economy as a type of economic activity and the basis for the development of partnership. New approaches to development management based on new economic thinking are outlined. First of all, this concerns the positioning of Ukraine in the global world as an agrarian, industrial or intellectual economy. It is proved that Ukraine is characterized by the integrated development of industry, science, production, agriculture and intellectual potential. From this it follows that a new system has been formed in the country and requires further development - the industrial-intellectual economy. The essence of this system of engineering and defense industry is noted. The organizational and economic mechanism of their adaptation to the conditions of the new system based on the processes of clustering and development of production relations is proposed.

This chapter provides a prototype design of a hand tremor compensator/controller to reduce the effect of the tremor to an external device/ apparatus, such as a magnetic pen for the patients suffering from Parkinson and similar diseases. It would also be effective for busy surgeons suffering from hand tremor due to muscle fatigue. Main emphasis in this chapter is given on the prediction of the tremor signal from the discrete samples of electromyogram data and tremor. The predicted signal is inverted in sign and added to the main tremor signal through a specially designed magnetic actuator carrying the external device, such as a magnetically driven pen or surgical instrument. Two different prediction algorithms, one based on neural nets and the other based on Kalman Filter have been designed, tested, and validated for the proposed application. A prototype model of the complete system was developed on an embedded platform. Further development on the basic model would be appropriate for field applications in controlling tremors of the subjects suffering from Parkinson and the like diseases.

BACKGROUND The combination of decreasing healthcare resources, long waiting lists, and limited options to meet the demands of the modern individual have significantly increased the use of web-based management options in healthcare during the last decade. According to international guidelines, the first line management for osteoarthritis (OA) is non-surgical, combining education and exercise therapy, but these guidelines are not always fully applied in practice. Web-based management programs have been suggested as a way to facilitate the implementation of such guidelines. However, patient experience of receiving OA management therapy delivered online has so far not been evaluated. OBJECTIVE To investigate the expectations and experiences of Joint Academy, a web-based management program for hip and knee OA, using a qualitative method. METHODS Nineteen patients with hip or knee OA were interviewed after completing their first six weeks in Joint Academy, using a semi-structured interview guide. The interviews were transcribed verbatim and analyzed using a systematic text condensation method. RESULTS Three categories emerged during the interviews: 1) Management options for mitigating the consequences of OA, including a) Consequences of OA on everyday life and b) Expectations when joining Joint Academy 2) Experiences of the design and exercises in Joint Academy, including a) Easy to execute, b) Flexibility to choose when and where, c) The importance of interacting with physical therapists, and d) Motivation 3) Perceived effects of Joint Academy over time, and suggested improvements, with three subcategories a) Perceived effects of Joint Academy after the initial six weeks, b) Reasons for continuing to participate in the program and c) Suggestions for improving Joint Academy. The participants had mostly positive experiences of the program. The following reasons were cited as particularly important for a positive experience of the program: short waiting list, the flexibility of the execution of the program with regards to location and time, and the possibility to have daily contact with a physical therapist. These were also emphasized as advantages compared to traditional care. CONCLUSIONS Web-based management of OA that includes education and exercises as well as asynchronous chats with an assigned physical therapist for feedback, questions and engagement, seems to be a valid alternative to traditional treatment in enabling the implementation of OA guidelines in a wider community. In addition, the results contribute to the further development and improvement of web-based OA management programs.

Based on a systematic approach, the authors consider the problems of forming the basic model and strategy of ecotourism in the Belarusian Polesie in 2000-2010 and give an expert forecast of the industry's development for the period up to 2025. The article reveals the features of ecotourism development in the Western part of the Belarusian Polesie. It is shown that ensuring environmental stability in modern conditions is predetermined by the formation of the concept of the ecological framework of the territory. It is noted that the blocks of the ecological framework are largely able to perform tourist and recreational functions. In addition, the article considers the natural and cultural-historical prerequisites for the development of ecotourism in the Gomel region, assesses the current level of development of this type of tourism, and determines the directions for further development of ecotourism in the region.
