This paper analyses the discovery learning / constuctivistic approach using cognitive tools in higher Mathematics education and focuses on electronic worksheets designed and implemented in Mathematica. The approach was applied at the University of Piraeus. Students from the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences participated in the research. The paper focuses on empirical research results on students’ attitudes towards the approach, concerning the cognitive tool used (Mathematica), the approach’s discovery learning and constructivistic characteristics and the development of higher order thinking skills supported by the approach. Regarding factors that could influence students’ attitudes, gender and experience in using computers are investigated. This paper uses quantitative methods in analyzing data collected via the use of a questionnaire and the research approaches used are the descriptive / investigative and the correlational approach.

The low level of students’ higher order thinking skills (HOTS) has been the main problem of education in Indonesia. This study aimed to determine the difference of students’ HOTS taught by using POE and Guided Discovery learning models. This quasi-experimental research involved 34 students of X IPA 3 and 32 students of X IPA 4 at SSHS 1 of Sungai Ambawang as the sample. The data obtained by using test which was analyzed using Mann-Whitney U-test. The results showed that the students’ HOTS who were treated with POE were significantly higher than those who were taught using Guided Discovery learning. Therefore, it is suggested to implement POE to improve students’ HOTS.

This paper studies the environment of the discovery learning/constructivistic approach using cognitive tools regarding students’ performance in tests involving different kinds of learning and in the final formal examinations and students’ attitudes towards the approach in Mathematics’ higher education. In particular the paper aims in identifying factors regarding students’ scores and attitudes affected by the approach and groups of students with similar characteristics based on these factors. Data was obtained by a study realized at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences of the University of Piraeus, concerning the application of the discovery learning/constructivistic approach using Mathematica on the course Calculus (Functions of multiple variables). Multivariable analysis methods are used in the data analysis, in particular factor analysis in identifying factors and cluster analysis in identifying groups of students with similar characteristics, in combination with inferential statistics’ methods. The statistical package SPSS was used for the data analysis.

This paper analyzes online discovery learning/ constructivistic approach using cognitive tools in higher Mathematics’ education, via a combination of electronic worksheets designed and implemented in Mathematica and online synchronous communication via the tools of a Learning Management System (LMS) and voice and video group calls. Moreover, the paper presents empirical research results of a case study concerning the approach’s application at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences of the University of Piraeus and focuses on students’ attitudes towards the approach. We used a mixed approach in the study, in particular a quantitative approach with open-ended questions. A questionnaire was handed out and was answered by the students that participated. We performed statistical analysis via SPSS to data obtained by questions with binary answers and answers on a 7-point Likert scale. Also we included several open-ended questions, in order for the students to express their views and attitudes towards the benefits and the disadvantages of the tools and the approach used.

The recent application of Content and Language Integrated Learning programs in higher education provides an extensive area for research due to the quick implementation of English as the medium of instruction for university programs, as well as to the need of university students around the world to communicate through English and to try different learning strategies and methodologies than the ones they used to work with. This study aimed to estimate the extent to which the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) program at the University of Cuenca designed for students who wish to become EFL teachers complies with the principles of the Content and Language Integrated Learning approach. The 121 participants of this study were students from the fourth, fifth, and seventh semesters of the program. A general proficiency English test was administered to these students; some writing assignments to evaluate the development of Higher Order Thinking Skills were considered; and a survey to inquire about students’ perceptions on the development of language, content, and Higher Order Thinking Skills in their content subject classes was also applied. The findings revealed that 52% of the students are between A1 and A2 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages; this means that they do not have the necessary linguistic conditions to take content subjects. It seems that the parameters teachers used to plan their classes do not consider the three dimensions of this approach (content, language, and procedures); therefore, students are not developing these dimensions simultaneously.

This study aims to develop a valid, effective, and practical HOTS-based worksheet for calculus courses in the Mathematics Education Department. The development of the worksheet is expected to improve critical and creative thinking skills, which is implemented through the Online Learning System (SPADA). This research is development research with the research subject being 27 students of Mathematics Education, Muhammadiyah University of Makassar. The instruments used in this study were instrument validation sheets, test, and student response questionnaires. This worksheet development process is adapted from the model of development of the 4-D models, which consists of define, design, develop, and disseminate. The results of the validation assessment were an average score of 3.61 in the valid categories. The result of the lecturers' practicality at 3.6 with the practical category. Furthermore, the results of the effectiveness assessment through the HOTS test showed that the percentage of classical completeness was 86.7%. The students' responses showed a positive response to this worksheet. The assessment results showed that the average pretest was 46.85, while the postest was 74.81. There is an increase in the average value of higher-order thinking skills from pretest to postest in field trials. So it produces worksheets based on HOTS through SPADA that have met the valid, practical, and effective aspects and can facilitate students in practicing their higher-order thinking skills.

The low problem-solving ability in understanding biology lessons makes biology lessons difficult for some prospective teachers to learn. This study aims to determine the contribution of science process skills to higher-order thinking skills. This study uses quantitative methods to analyse the HOTS skills of prospective biology teachers. The quantitative descriptive method used in this study. Data collected from 59 respondents through the Saturated Sampling technique. The instrument used was 54 multiple choice questions with indicators of science process skills and higher-order thinking skills. The data obtained is processed quantitatively with Microsoft Excel. Prospective Biology teachers have the contribution of science process skills with a high level of ability of 13% and a contribution is known. This research proves that the contribution of science process skills to prospective biology teachers to higher-level thinking skills has low categorisation. Rendahnya kemampuan pemecahan masalah dalam memahami pelajaran biologi menyebabkan pelajaran biologi menjadi sulit dipelajari oleh sebagian calon guru. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui kontribusi keterampilan proses sains terhadap kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kuantitatif untuk menganalisa keterampilan HOTS calon guru biologi. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah diskriptif kuantitatif. Data dikumpulkan dengan sampel sebanyak 59 mahasiswa melalui teknik Sampling Jenuh. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa 54 soal pilihan ganda dengan indikator keterampilan proses sains dan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi. Data yang diperoleh diolah secara kuantitatif dengan Microsoft Excel. Calon guru Biologi memiliki hasil kontribusi keterampilan proses sains dengan kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi sebesar 13% dan diketahui adanya kontribusi. Penelitian ini membuktikan bahwa kontribusi keterampilan proses sains calon guru biologi terhadap kemampuan berpikir tingkat tinggi memiliki kategori rendah. Environmental learning at the school and university levels, often still uses conventional learning. This is a problem, considering the ability of students' Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) is very necessary for the 21st century. The purpose of this study is to do need assessment on learning media, teaching materials, learning materials, worksheets, and learning evaluations used in the learning environment in schools and universities. The study was conducted from November 2017 - January 2019 at several schools in Bekasi and one university in Jakarta. The research method used is descriptive method with data collection techniques using observation and interviews. The results showed that media learning, teaching materials, learning materials, students worksheets, and learning evaluations at various levels were not all based on HOTS. HOTS-based learning has been applied at the university level and senior high school but is still rarely used. This is due to the lack of development in environmental learning. The conclusion of this study is that environmental learning is not all HOTS-based.
