The article presents the analysis of parameters of the Lower Volga hydrological regime in terms of the regulated runoff, which was carried out using data of long-term observations. There have been considered characteristics of the spring flood and summer high water in 2017. It is stated that the current situation in the Lower Volga is the result of natural and anthropogenic processes, which demands the continuous monitoring operation of the Volga-Kama series of water reservoirs as an indivisible hydrogenic system.

The study of changes in river discharge is important for regional climate variability characterization and for development of an efficient water resource management system. The hydrological regime of rivers and their long-term changes in Latvia were investigated. Four major types of river hydrological regimes, which depend on climatic and physicogeographic factors, were characterized. These factors are linked to the changes observed in river discharge. Periodic oscillations of discharge, and low- and high-water flow years are common for the major rivers in Latvia. A main frequency of river discharge regime changes of about 20 and 13 years was estimated for the studied rivers. A significant impact of climate variability on the river discharge regime has been found.

Introduction. In Ukraine, under the conditions of current climate variability, the water content of the rivers, including the period of spring flood, changes. Against the background of the general tendency of reduction of the runoff characteristics of the spring flood of the rivers in Ukraine, formation of catastrophic floods on rivers leading to flooding of territories and destruction of economic objects should not be ruled out. The research is aimed at solving an important scientific-applied and socio-economic problem of improving the water management in the basin of the country's large waterway, the Dnipro River, through probabilistic assessments of hydrological threats which include spring flood and its consequences – floods of various magnitudes. Therefore it is necessary to create a unified universal mathematical model for formation, calculation and long-term forecasting of water flood characteristics, and to implement it for the Dnipro Basin's rivers (including small ones which usually are not recorded in the data of runoff observations), taking into account the climate changes of the winter-spring period. The purpose consists in prognostic assessment of the hydrological regime characteristics of the Dnipro Basin's rivers during the most full-flowing phase of their water regime, the spring flood, for the purpose of spatial monitoring of the state of water objects during this period. The research offers the method of territorial long-term forecasts of the spring floods characteristics which is based on the theory of channel isochrones and consideration of the complex of runoff formation hydrometeorological factors with preliminary determination of the type of water content of spring flood. The spatial representation of forecast variables in cartographic form will allow estimation of the size of the water flood and its long-term repeatability throughout the entire basin and preparation of forecasts for separate rivers, regardless of the degree of their hydrological exploration. Results. As a result of application of the complex forecasting method of territorial long-term forecasts of the spring flood characteristics of the rivers (through the example of the Dnipro Basin within Ukrainian borders), typification of floods based on their water content was performed using a discriminant function apparatus which takes into account the probable combination of hydrometeorological factors of spring floods. In terms of regional dependencies forecast of runoff depths and maximum water flow of floods was conducted and probability of their occurrence in the long-term period was determined. Assessment of the forecast methodology provided satisfactory results, and, under the conditions of long-term tendency to decrease runoff depths and maximum water flow during the spring flood of the Dnipro Basin's rivers, it is proposed to specify the average long-term values of these variables which are basic ones when applying the method of territorial long-term forecasts of the maximum spring runoff of rivers. A spatial preliminary estimation of the size of spring floods within the Dnipro River Basin was also fulfilled. The authors completed implementation of the method of territorial long-term forecasts of spring flood characteristics using the data of the water flood of 2017-2018. Conclusion. In general, taking into account the obtained criteria of accuracy, the method can be considered effective and recommended for release of annual long-term forecasts of the rivers' spring flood characteristics at in operational units delivering forecasting hydrological services to respective consumers. Through the example of the spring flood of 2017-2018 the possibility of forecasting assessment of the hydrological regime characteristics of the Dnipro Basin's rivers was shown which allows determining the zones of increased river runoff over the spring period and increased threat of possible flooding of surrounding areas, especially when the floods with a rare probability of excess occur.

The article gives an assessment of the hydrological regime on the River Tesha sector . The assessment was obtained during the pre-project study of the object and allows making project decisions on clearing the riverbed. The River Tesha Basin has been well studied in the past. However, there was no data based on long-term observation of the river's hydrological regime parameters in the area under consideration; hence, the authors performed calculations for data recovery by interpolation between existing hydrological posts, as well as for obtaining their representative series and determining their hydrological characteristics. Correlation between changes in flow rates and water levels in the river was found, as well as between the riverbed morphological parameters (depth, width, cross-section area) and its hydraulic characteristics (flow rate, flow rates). The completed assessment of the hydrological regime makes it possible to forecast river flooding at high water levels as well as flooding of the surrounding area, and to make project decisions thereafter, including the identification of flooding areas, the dump sites choice, these sites functioning period f that depends on when and for how long they will be flooded during the year.

The ecological state of the protected Islands Seredysh and Shalyga (now Bakhilovsky island) depends on the water content and flow of the Volga River. We have analyzed the long-term changes in the water flow of the Volga River for the period 1958-2017 in the alignment Zhiguli dam, located 12 km upstream from the island. According to the average annual water consumption, there are three periods that differ from each other in water content: low-water period (1958–1976), high-water period (1977–1997) and the period of average water content (1998–2017), with extremely low-water (1967, 1973, 1975, 1976, 1977, 1996) and extremely high-water (1966, 1979, 1981, 1990, 1991, 1994) years. In highwater years, during the passage of the spring flood, the island is almost completely flooded, and in low-water years, during the summer low water, the area of the island increases and changes its configuration.

The present paper studies long-term (1923–2005) changes in the hydrological regime of the medium (100–1,000 km2) river of the Ordovician oil shale field of north-east Estonia. The changing regime in the heavily mined catchments is contrasted with a morphologically similar reference catchment (River Keila) where there has been no mining activity. The Gumbel Method and Rodionov Regime Shifts Algorithm (STARS) were used to study high- and low-water changes of the mining area. The study shows that mine water has no significant impact on the River Purtse annual run-off; however, it has influence on the low water period and minimum flow values, increasing the amount of run-off. Mine water discharge can affect the course of the run-off during the high water period and high water season peaks. Therefore, in terms of the river maximum flows return period, there are no major differences between the mining and natural catchments.

In the Volga River water, sulfate ions rank second among the main anions in terms of their contribution to water mineralization. To study the seasonal variability of sulfate concentration, an analysis of long-term data of hydrological and hydrochemical observations obtained on the River Volga (in the outlet section of the Kuibyshev reservoir) has been carried out. For the period of 2001-2018 the average annual water consumption in the dam section varied in the range of 6.2-9.0 thousand m3/s, the average annual concentration of sulfates was 55 mg/dm3, the highest - 64 mg/dm3, and the lowest - 45 mg/dm3. The content of sulfates in the reservoir is formed mainly under the influence of the Volga River water coming from the Cheboksary reservoir and the Kama River water coming from the Nizhnekamsk reservoir. The sulfate content is characterized by significant seasonal variability. During the winter low-water period, the highest concentrations of sulfates were observed with a maximum in April, before the beginning of the spring flood (67 mg/dm3). During the flood, the content of sulfates decreased, reaching the lowest values during the summer low-water period in August (44 mg/dm3), and then, from September, the concentration of sulfates gradually increased, reaching 57 mg/dm3 at the beginning of the winter low-water period. Over a long-term observation period, the amplitude of sulfate fluctuations was 34-87 mg/dm3, and its value depended on the water content of a particular year. In dry years, the concentration of sulfates in the water increased, and in dry years, it decreased. In the seasonal context, the main differences in sulfate concentrations in dry and high-water years occurred during the spring flood and winter low-water period, and during the summer - autumn low-water period, the differences became minimal.

Abstract Barun-Torey and Zun-Torey lakes are located in the arid steppe zone of the Central (Inner) Asia, Eastern Siberia, Russia. The Torey lakes are characterizes unstable hydrological regime. The water level variation is explained by the periodic filling and drying of the lakes due to cyclical climatic changes in humidity and temperature. We conducted our studies various water level phases of the climatic cycle: from high water level (1999, 2003) to drying out and the initial filling phase (2007, 2011, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2020). The aim of this paper is to present long-term research results on changes in the plankton biocenoses of the Torey lakes during a climate cycle, the drying and initial filling of basins. Succession of plankton dominant species is in the direction of: diatoms+green algae and rotifers+crustaceans → green algae and crustaceans → green algae+cyanobacteria and crustaceans → no planktonic algae and invertebrates → cyanobacteria+diatoms+green algae and rotifers+cladocerans+copepods.

The hydrological regime of water reservoirs in different years has a decisive impact on the abundance of commercial fish stocks and the quality of ichthyocenoses. In this connection in 2015-2016 there was conducted a retrospective analysis and ranking of hydrological regime impact on these factors. The paper gives evaluation of catches and fish stocks under different scenarios of water availability in the main fishing ponds of the Republic of Kazakhstan that give about 80% of the annual fish catch of the country (except the Caspian Sea). There were analyzed 2000 factors of hydrological regime (water level, annual discharge) and 1845 factors of fishing stocks (catches, abundance, fish biomass). The paper determines the critical characteristics of water availability for fish stocks. There have been proposed a number of administrative decisions and actions in case if water content would approach to the critical level. Among them: limitation of fish catches in the following year; widening zones restricted for fishing; intensification of safety measures of the fish young in residual ponds during arid periods; introduction of catch standards for a unit of fishing effort in low-water years, high-water years and years with normal water level in rivers.

Abstract Objectives This study aimed to investigate the clinical characteristics, treatment and prognosis of juvenile idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (JIIM) in Japan for each myositis-specific autoantibody (MSA) profile. Methods A multicentre, retrospective study was conducted using data of patients with JIIM at nine paediatric rheumatology centres in Japan. Patients with MSA profiles, determined by immunoprecipitation using stored serum from the active stage, were included. Results MSA were detected in 85 of 96 cases eligible for the analyses. Over 90% of the patients in this study had one of the following three MSA types: anti-melanoma differentiation-associated protein 5 (MDA5) (n = 31), anti-transcriptional intermediary factor 1 alpha and/or gamma subunits (TIF1γ) (n = 25) and anti-nuclear matrix protein 2 (NXP2) (n = 25) antibodies. Gottron papules and periungual capillary abnormalities were the most common signs of every MSA group in the initial phase. The presence of interstitial lung disease (ILD) was the highest risk factor for patients with anti-MDA5 antibodies. Most patients were administered multiple drug therapies: glucocorticoids and MTX were administered to patients with anti-TIF1γ or anti-NXP2 antibodies. Half of the patients with anti-MDA5 antibodies received more than three medications including i.v. CYC, especially patients with ILD. Patients with anti-MDA5 antibodies were more likely to achieve drug-free remission (29 vs 21%) and less likely to relapse (26 vs 44%) than others. Conclusion Anti-MDA5 antibodies are the most common MSA type in Japan, and patients with this antibody are characterized by ILD at onset, multiple medications including i.v. CYC, drug-free remission, and a lower frequency of relapse. New therapeutic strategies are required for other MSA types.

A cohort case–control study was conducted in XiangYa Hospital, Changsha, China, which involved 305 patients and 399 healthy women, from June 2010 to December 2018, to evaluate the association between Chinese women’s short- and long-term exposure to industrial air pollutant, SO2 and gynaecological cancer (GC). We obtained personal and family information from the XiangYa Hospital electronic computer medical records. Using data obtained from the air quality monitoring stations in Changsha, we estimated each woman’s exposure to the industrial air pollutant, sulphur dioxide (SO2), for different time windows, including the past 1, 5, 10 and 15 years before diagnosis of the disease. A multiple logistic regression model was used to assess the association between GC and SO2 exposure. GC was significantly associated with long-term SO2 exposure, with adjusted odds ratio (95% confidence interval) = 1.56 (1.10–2.21) and 1.81 (1.07–3.06) for a per interquartile range increase in the past 10 and 15 years, respectively. Sensitivity analysis showed that different groups reacted in different ways to long-term SO2 exposure. We concluded that long-term exposure to high concentration of industrial pollutant, SO2 is associated with the development of GC. This finding has implications for the prevention and reduction of GC.
