The question of the method of describing of Author’s Image in Texts in modern linguistics is discussed in the article. It is argued that this technique requires the development of principles focused on systems engineering. The authors of the article note that one of the problems of modern genre studies is that a large amount of research in this area in aggregate reflects various approaches to the description of the “image of the author” in texts of the genre. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that for an objective description of the author’s image, the hypothesis of “Functional modeling of the author of the genre” is put forward: the model of the genre system in the epistemological description has a complex level structure. The authors of the article put forward their own development of the technology for describing the image of the author of the genre, defining this technology as effective and consistent with the principles of a systematic approach to genre phenomena. In order to solve the problem of the attributive aspect of describing a genre, that is, to determine its units, it seems productive to analyze the genre according to the so-called communicative-semiotic model. The article proposes ways of solving emerging problems concerning the principles of objectivist description of the author’s model of the genre.

The article defines the methodological problems of constructing a model of the speech genre and suggests the way of solving them. The existing models of Text – Text components – Genre type are recognized as the main tool for the study and description of speech genres. It is argued that the speech genre description methodology in modern linguistics should be focused on the ideas of systematic construction. The principles of text analysis in the aspect of speech genre studies are determined and some errors of scientifically employed approaches are identified. The elimination of these errors will allow genre studies to shift to a new methodological principle of constructing a genre model that has a diagnostic potential. The current problematic issues of genre studies are formulated. As a productive technology for describing a speech genre, we propose a universal method of functional modelling, which will enable designing genres and their modules on the basis of regularity, obligation, and oppositional character. In order to solve the problem of genre description in the attributive aspect, that is, to determine its units, it is productive to analyze the genre applying the so-called communicative semiotic model, as well as the method of transformational-and-oppositional analysis. The proposed principle of genre description is postulated as a method of objective modelling. Thus, within the framework of this study, the analysis of the theoretical problems of modern genre studies is carried out, the objectives of speech genres investigation are formulated and the approaches to their achieving are presented in an overview.

The article deals with the problem of the relationship between two linguistic theories: a speech genre theory and a speech act theory. The research is based on the genre of a contact excursion. From the point of view of genre studies a contact excursion is a speech genre and it can be described using the “speech genre questionnaire” proposed by T. V. Shmeleva, which includes the communicative goal of the genre, the concept of the author, the concept of the addressee, the dictum content, the image of the communicative past, the image of the communicative future, and the language embodiment. From the point of view of functional and structural classification, a contact excursion is a complex genre or a hypergenre, consisting of a number of simple genres. Within the framework of the actional or the activity approach, which is based on the speech act theory, a contact excursion can be considered as a communicative event and described using speech strategies and tactics which represent one or more speech actions, which traces to the concept of a speech act. The notion of the communicative style serves as the basis to reconcile and combine both theories.

This article presents an educational approach to applied capstone research projects using a mission engineering focus. It reviews recent advances in mission engineering within the Department of Defense and integrates that work into an approach for research within the Systems Engineering Department at the Naval Postgraduate School. A generalized sequence of System Definition, System Modeling, and System Analysis is presented as an executable sequence of activities to support analysis of operational missions within a student research project at Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). That approach is detailed and demonstrated through analysis of the integration of a long-range strike capability on a MH-60S helicopter. The article serves as a demonstration of an approach for producing operationally applicable results from student projects in the context of mission engineering. Specifically, it demonstrates that students can execute a systems engineering project that conducts system-level design with direct consideration of mission impacts at the system of systems level. Discussion of the benefits and limitations of this approach are discussed and suggestions for integrating mission engineering into capstone courses are provided.

Model based systems engineering (MBSE) is becoming a promising approach for the system-level design of complex mechatronics. And several MBSE tools are developed to conduct system modeling. However, the system design cannot be optimized in current MBSE tools. In this study, an approach is presented to conduct the task. A set of optimization stereotype is defined at first which is used to formalize the optimization model based on the system design model. Then the design parameters and their relationships applied optimization stereotypes are extracted and transferred to construct the tool-dependent optimization model. Finally, the optimization model is solved and the results are given back and then modify the corresponding system model automatically. In this paper, MagicDraw is used to model the whole system whereas Matlab optimizer is used for optimization. The combustion engine is chosen as the example to illustrate the proposed approach.

For large-scale equipment systems whose elements and internal structure are complex, traditional systems engineering methods can’t meet the requirements of the system modeling. In this paper, a kind of modeling method based on UPDM is developed to solve the complexity of equipment systems. This paper proceeds as follow. Firstly, analyze the mission of equipment systems; secondly, using a variety of views product describes the equipment systems; then, validate the systems structure by generating an executable model. Finally, an experiment about equipment systems modeling of space weaponry indicates the modeling method based on UPDM is effective.

This paper presents a model-based systems engineering methodology that can be applied to perform a root cause analysis on transient systems. The methodology extends existing root cause analysis best practice by incorporating system modeling and analysis techniques. The methodology is deployed through a detailed 5-step process to understand, identify, assess, FMEA, and validate potential transient system-level root causes. A transient performance reliability analysis for a dual mode refrigeration system is used to demonstrate how the methodology can be applied. The paper also describes a set of success factors for applying the methodology using a phased approach with a large cross-functional team.

The article presents the practice of using systems engineering methods in the development of a universal locomotive frame. The work is aimed at developing the optimal design of the locomotive frame, which will simplify the production process of the unit and save on design and technological preparation of production. The advantages of applying a systematic approach to working with requirements, identifying the required functions and forming the structural structure of the product are described. Keywords: locomotive, frame, life cycle, systems engineering, requirement, function, design.
