This paper describes the results of poem analysis using the semiotic model of Riffaterre. The objects of analysis were poems written by J.E Tatengkeng from Indonesia including Di Lereng Gunung, Bulan Terang, and Melati; and Robert Frost from America including Nothing Gold Can Stay, Fireflies in the Garden, and After Apple Picking. The analysis was conducted using two steps of reading. The first was the heuristic reading conducted by using linguistic knowledge; while the second was the retroactive reading conducted by using knowledge beyond the text. This second step was intended to conclude the hypograms, and based on the hypograms, matrices and significance of the poems were concluded. The analysis revealed the poems’ matrices and significance related to the value of love, beauty of nature, and religious belief. Keywords: Riffaterre, J.E. Tatengkeng, Robert Frost.

The high number of covid-19 cases and the US's mortality rate encourage The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to socialize and promote prevention guidance to stop the spreading. One of the preventive measures is by issuing travel warnings. Scholars have noted that the linguistic and cultural concept conveys norms of behavior and values in society at a particular stage of its development. In brief, advertisements messages are influenced by communicators' cultural backgrounds and references. It means the signs in the CDC poster can show American values. To examine and explore those cultural values in CDC publication materials, the authors conducted a semiotic analysis on a poster entitled Health Alert: For All Travelers. The method used is Ferdinand de Saussure's semiotic model. The study shows that the signs presented on the CDC poster are simple, use direct communication structures, and are equipped with universal meaning to understand the message conveyed easily. It indicates a representation of the dominant culture in the United States, the low-context culture with a high level of individualism values. Multidisciplinary research is needed to help create a universal communication model so that messages conveyed in advertisements can reach a wider audience.

If the significance of nature is a crucial phenomenon in understanding the forms of relations societies establish with the environment, in what way is this significance built? This paper presents the results of a case study focused on exploring how the meanings of nature and socioecological relationships relate to each other in an indigenous population. The first part of the article explains the theoretical scaffolding used to collect and analyse data, based on ecological anthropology and Ogden and Richards’ semiotic scheme. The second part describes the methodological procedures and the first findings, that is, the elements and dimensions that integrate the meanings of nature and land for the inhabitants of this population. It is also explained how those meanings are built and how they are fused to local socioecological relationships in an ontological way. The findings reveal that the inhabitants of this community configure their meanings of ‘nature’ from multiple references of biological, spiritual, axiological, and cultural character, often represented by its referent ‘land’. The notion of ‘nature’ (as land) is created from subjective and social experiences with the environment and the territory, and in turn provides meaning to the biocultural identity of the population. However, historical learning, worldview, and social organization also emerge as the main structuring elements of the social meanings of nature and land.

Abstract This paper aims to explore and critique Wolfhart Pannenberg’s use of semiotic concepts in his understanding and explanation of the church. He defines the church as “the fellowship of individual believers,” and a “sign of the future fellowship of humanity under God’s reign,” i. e. the future Kingdom of God. As he continues to articulate his doctrine of the church, Pannenberg employs semiotic concepts to articulate this notion of the church as a sign of the Kingdom of God. In this paper, I aim to explore Pannenberg’s use of semiotic concepts as they concern his understanding of the church and provide critique and a new way forward of understanding the church as a sign of the Kingdom of God. Though Pannenberg is right to employ semiotic concepts and terminology to expound upon and clarify this concept, he is wrong in the semiotic model of the sign and approach he chooses to employ. In what follows, I first summarize and explicate Pannenberg’s semiotic understanding of the church, and then I provide a critique and corrective of his semiotic preferences with the semiotic work of American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce.

The question of the method of describing of Author’s Image in Texts in modern linguistics is discussed in the article. It is argued that this technique requires the development of principles focused on systems engineering. The authors of the article note that one of the problems of modern genre studies is that a large amount of research in this area in aggregate reflects various approaches to the description of the “image of the author” in texts of the genre. The novelty of the research is seen in the fact that for an objective description of the author’s image, the hypothesis of “Functional modeling of the author of the genre” is put forward: the model of the genre system in the epistemological description has a complex level structure. The authors of the article put forward their own development of the technology for describing the image of the author of the genre, defining this technology as effective and consistent with the principles of a systematic approach to genre phenomena. In order to solve the problem of the attributive aspect of describing a genre, that is, to determine its units, it seems productive to analyze the genre according to the so-called communicative-semiotic model. The article proposes ways of solving emerging problems concerning the principles of objectivist description of the author’s model of the genre.

Film is a mass media that presents a story in audio-visual form. This research aims to see how are the representation of feminism in the Disney Live-Action Mulan film. The method used is descriptive qualitative research methods with semiotic as data analysis techniques. Data are collected using the methods of documentation, observation, and literature study. The signs of the film were analyzed using Roland Barthes' semiotic model two-stage of signification, which are the denotation, connotation, and myth stages. This film shows the discrimination that happened in women due to patriarchal ideology. The results of this study indicate that the Disney Live-Action Mulan film dominantly represents the flow of liberal feminism, existentialism feminism, and radical-libertarian feminism through its main character, Hua Mulan. Hua Mulan's feminist behavior can be seen from her that are opposing discrimination and standards as a woman, performing male roles, able to be a leader, takes risks and being responsible, independent, able to gets recognition, and proving that she is able to give honor to her family. This film has a meaning that a woman can give honor to her family by being herself, and can have the right to be treated equally and also the right to determine and be responsible for her way of life.Film merupakan salah satu jenis media massa yang menampilkan cerita dengan bentuk audio visual. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk melihat bagaimana representasi feminisme pada film Disney Live-Action Mulan. Metode yang digunakan adalah metode penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan teknik analisis data semiotika. Data yang dikumpulkan menggunakan metode dokumentasi, observasi, dan studi pustaka. Tanda-tanda dari film dianalisis dengan menggunakan model semiotika signifikasi dua tahap Roland Barthes yaitu tahap denotasi, konotasi, dan mitos. Film ini memperlihatkan diskriminasi yang terjadi pada perempuan yang disebabkan ideologi patriarki. Film Disney Live-Action Mulan secara dominan merepresentasikan aliran feminisme liberal, feminisme eksistensialisme, dan feminisme radikal-libertarian lewat tokoh utamanya yaitu Hua Mulan. Perilaku feminisme Hua Mulan terlihat dari perilakunya yang melawan diskriminasi serta standar sebagai perempuan, mampu melakukan peran laki-laki, menjadi pemimpin, berani mengambil resiko dan bertanggung jawab, independen, mendapat pengakuan dan membuktikkan bahwa ia mampu memberi kehormatan untuk keluarganya. Film ini dapat memiliki makna bahwa seorang perempuan dapat memberikan kehormatan pada keluarganya dengan menjadi dirinya sendiri, dan dapat memiliki hak untuk diperlalukan secara setara dan hak untuk menentukan dan bertanggung jawab atas jalan hidupnya sendiri.

The paper aims to give a comprehensive cognitive and semiotic analysis of translation strategies implied in the translation of the film “Darkest Hour”. Regarding a film as a communicative process mediated by certain semiotic features makes it possible to analyze the semiotic character of film discourse in translation. Thus, it was decided that translation is not just a speech-oriented process but a communicative act taking place within a definite semiotic space in a cross-cultural perspective. The semiotic model of cinematic discourse has a complicated structure and is analyzed based on semantic, syntactic, and pragmatic criteria. The choice of the semiotic system primarily depends on the communicative situation and its recipients. As the semiotic system of the film “Darkest Hour” is both socioculturally and situationally conditioned, the translator reconstructed the sense of the source language text by implying the translation transformations that assured the accuracy and adequacy of its translation into the target language text.
