Abstract The experimental objective was to evaluate the digestibility and fermentation differences between high and low energy corn samples and their response to xylanase supplementation. Four corn samples, 2 with higher DE content (HE-1 and HE-2; 3.74 and 3.75 Mcal DE/kg DM, respectively) and 2 with a lower DE content (LE-1 and LE-2; 3.63 and 3.56 Mcal DE/kg DM, respectively) were selected based upon a previous digestibility trial. Sixteen individually housed barrows (PIC 359 × C29; initial BW = 34.8 ± 0.23kg) were surgically fitted with an ileal T-cannula and randomly allotted to treatments in an 8 × 4 Youden square design. Dietary treatments were arranged in a 4 × 2 factorial: HE-1, HE-2, LE-1, and LE-2, with and without xylanase supplementation. Diets were formulated using one of the 4 corn samples, casein, vitamins, minerals, and 0.4% chromic oxide as an indigestible marker. Feed intake was established at approximately 3 times the estimated energy required for maintenance (NRC 2012) based upon the average initial BW of the pigs at the start of each collection period, which consisted of 9 d adaptation, 2 d of fecal, and 3 d of ileal collections. Diets, ileal, and fecal samples were analyzed for DM, GE, and total dietary fiber (TDF), to determine apparent total tract (ATTD), hindgut fermentation (HF), apparent ileal digestibility (AID) coefficients. A diet × enzyme interaction was not observed for any of the measured variables (P > 0.10). The HE-1 and HE-2 diets had greater ATTD of GE, and HE-2 diet had greater ATTD of DM (P < 0.001 and P = 0.007, respectively). Xylanase, independent of diet, improved the ATTD of GE and DM (84.8 vs. 83.6% for GE with and without enzyme, respectively, P = 0.008; and 84.2 and 83.0% with and without enzyme, respectively, P = 0.007). The energetic differences among these corn samples appeared to be driven by fermentability in the hindgut. Supplementing xylanase improves digestibility irrespective of the digestibility energy content of corn.

A total of twenty-five crossbred rabbit bucks with a mean weight of 628.73g were utilized to investigate their nutrient digestibility, visceral organ changes, and carcass yield when fed with diets containing graded levels of rumen filtrate-fermented rice offal (FRO) for 10 weeks. Five rabbits were grouped into five treatments with each rabbit serving as a replicate in a completely randomized design experiment. The control group was fed with a diet containing no rumen filtrate fermented-rice offal meal while the other four groups were fed with diets in which the FRO replaced the maize at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%, respectively. The results of the analyzed nutrient composition and energy content of the experimental diets showed no trend across the treatments except for crude protein and metabolizable energy whose values appeared to increase across treatments as the levels of FRO increased from 0% to 20%. Dry Matter (DM), Crude Fiber (CF), Ether Extract (EE) and Nitrogen Free Extract (NFE) digestibility values were affected by the inclusion level of the fermented rice offal in the diets of the rabbits, except Crude Protein (CP). Crude fiber values appeared to increase across the treatments as the levels of FRO increased from 0% to 20%. Dressed weight showed significantly (p<0.05) higher values for rabbits fed with diets containing 20% FRO and prime cuts were significantly (p<0.05) influenced by treatments. The result of visceral organ and GIT weights showed treatment effect (p<0.05), except fasted live weights, spleen, and visceral fats. Of the visceral organ lengths, only the esophagus and stomach were similar (p>0.05) across treatment groups. It was therefore concluded that the digestibility of nutrients was not adversely affected; such that 20% inclusion of rumen filtrate-fermented rice offal showed no modification on visceral organ changes and a better carcass yield observed in rabbits on the diets. It was suggested that up to 20% rumen filtrate-fermented rice offal meal can be integrated into rabbit diets without impairing their digestibility, visceral organ characteristics, and carcass yield.

Six separate regression equations have been calculated to relate the metabolizable energy (ME) value of 16 samples of wheat and 16 samples of barley, determined with young chicks, growing turkeys and adult roosters, to their chemical composition. The simplest equation accounted for 83% of the variation in the mean ME values of the barley samples determined with chicks merely by using the crude fiber level in the barley. The prediction equation for the ME values of the barleys for the turkeys included crude fiber, crude protein and ash. In the case of the wheat, the prediction equations used crude fiber, crude protein, ash, fat, nitrogen-free extract and selenium, although selenium could be eliminated without great loss of precision for wheat samples with less than 1.32 ppm selenium. Nitrogen-free extract as a measure of available carbohydrate gave higher coefficients of determination to the regression equations than more specific assays of starch and sugar. The ME values estimated in the present study were compared with those estimated by applying prediction equations published earlier by a number of other workers. These equations fell into two groups: those designed to predict the ME values of individual feeds, and those designed to predict the ME values of a whole range of feeds and mixed diets. There was better agreement between the predicted values from the first group of equations and the observed values for the wheats and barleys than for the ME values predicted by the more general equations. However, even the equations specifically developed for wheats underestimated the ME values of the wheat samples determined with roosters, and it is suggested that there may be merit in developing prediction equations for each feed for use with each class of poultry.

The present investigation was conducted to evaluate the nutrient composition of full fat/defatted rice bran. The content of crude protein, crude fiber, ash, total carbohydrates and total dietary fiber of full fat and defatted rice bran were 11, 13.80; 10.90, 13.10; 9.20, 11.60; 49.92, 61.46; 21.63, 24.50 per cent, respectively. The amount of total Ca, P, Mg, Fe and K of full fat and defatted rice bran were 69.23, 69.80; 1331, 1345; 798, 826; 32.80, 33.31 and 1435, 1456 mg per 100g, respectively. The protein digestibility of full fat rice bran (65.86%) was less as compared to that of defatted rice bran (66.56%). Defatted rice bran had 6.21 mg available iron and 17.57 mg available calcium per 100g which were significantly (P less than 0.05) higher than those of full fat rice bran. Because of removal of fat, the relative amounts of other nutrients changed proportionately in defatted rice bran.

Abstract. The aim of the study was to determine the digestibility and energy content of Paulownia elongata S.Y.Hu leaves after leaf fall. Leaves together with petioles were dried at room temperature and milled with a roughage mill before feeding to animals. A classical digestion trial was performed, with three rams weighing 55.4kg on average, by determining the chemical composition of consumed feed, feed leftovers and excreted faeces. Digestibility was evaluated as difference in the amount of ingested nutrients and nutrients excreted with faeces and it was determined to be 50.72, 52.08, 31.63, 54.09, 55.15 and 56.06% for dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), crude protein (CP), ether extract (EE), crude fibre (CF) and nitrogen-free extract (NFE). The energy value for ruminants calculated on the basis of chemical composition and established digestibility was 8.29 MJ digestible energy (DE)/kg DM, 6.55 MJ metabolizable energy (ME)/ kg DM, 0.59 feed units for milk (FUM)/kg DM and 0.52 feed units for growth (FUG)/kg DM.
