We reviewed a total of 67 studies of the relationship between the cognitive style dimension of field dependence-independence and brain organization. To date, such studies have followed three basic lines of approach: (1) cerebral localization of processes involved in field dependence-independence; (2) evaluation of the relationship between field dependence-independence and hemisphericity; (3) evaluation of the relationship between field dependence-independence and hemispheric differentiation. The results of all three types of study are largely coherent with the differentiation theory formulated by Witkin and his coworkers. In addition, findings to date are of interest in that they suggest new directions for more detailed investigation of the relationship between field dependence-independence and brain organization. These directions appear very promising for improving our understanding of both the nature of cognitive styles and the functioning of the brain in general.

The relationship between cognitive style and illusion magnitude was examined using the assimilation and contrast Delboeuf distortions. As in previous research, field dependence correlated positively with assimilation; however, a significant negative correlation with contrast was also found, suggesting that, while field dependence may involve the illusory integration of the stimulus field, field independence may involve its equally illusory differentiation.

The perceptual skills and cognitive styles of 30 master artists are compared to those of non-artist groups of different ages, beginning with 84 kindergarten children, and including an adult comparison group of 32. Criteria for master artists were first, handcrafted productions; second, major economic support derived from their art; third, shows in museums or good galleries; and fourth, positive peer evaluation. The test battery contained one intelligence test, two vision tests, three perceptual-discrimination measures, and five perceptual-cognitive style measures. Results show artists are significantly more flexible, accurate, variable, and field independent than all other groups. Artists, non-artist adults, and young children (60 high school sophomores, 60 children in Grade 5, 84 kindergarteners) each have differing cognitive styles. The relationship between cognitive style and artists' and non-artists' instrumental competency is discussed. Last, the extensive differences between artists' and children's performances are discussed in terms of developmental theory.

Determination of the relationship between individuals’ cognitive styles and cognitive structure outcomes was the main aim of this study. Sixty-six participants were enrolled in the study and their cognitive styles were determined by using the Hidden Figure Test (for their field dependent/independent dimension of cognitive style) and the Convergent/Divergent Test (for their convergence/divergence dimension of cognitive style). An open-ended questionnaire was formed in order to determine participants’ cognitive structure outcomes. The study topic was chosen as chemical kinetics since it is one of the most difficult topics in chemistry according to many students and also there is limited study in the literature on this topic. Key concepts about chemical kinetics were selected and given to the participants and they were asked to write a text by using the given concepts. A flow map technique was used to reveal participants’ cognitive structure outcomes. According to the findings of this study, it can be said that field independent participants tended to be divergent thinkers while field dependents tended to be convergent thinkers. Also, strong positive relationships between participants’ field dependency/independency and some cognitive structure outcomes (extent and richness) were found. That is, field independents tended to have more extended and richer cognitive structure outcomes. However, the convergence/divergence dimension of cognitive style did not show any correlation with cognitive structure outcomes.

Background: The effectiveness of team interaction is often assessed through sociometric indicators, namely sociometric status and emotional reciprocity. At the same time, interpersonal interaction is a cognitive process, since it includes such mental processes as perception, categorization, thinking, speech, etc., which serve for information processing. These individual differences in the way information is processed underlie the concept of cognitive styles. Therefore, cognitive styles can hypothetically be considered as characteristics of interpersonal interaction and a predictor of its effectiveness. Aim: The paper aims to determine the sociometric characteristics of the effectiveness of team interaction of persons with different degree of the field-dependent cognitive style. Materials and methods. To assess field-dependence/field-independence, the Gottschaldt Embedded Figures method was used. The effectiveness of team interaction was assessed using the Moreno small group study method. Statistical analysis was performed with the Mann-Whitney test using IBM SPSS Statistics 23. Results. It was found that persons with a mobile field-dependent cognitive style had a significantly higher hierarchical position and a stable position in the system of nterpersonal relations compared with persons with a polar field-dependent cognitive style. Evidence was obtained on the splitting of field dependence into polar field-dependent and mobile field-dependent styles. Conclusion. Field-dependence/field-independence can be considered as one of the basic inner qualities of a person's intellectual activity, which influences his/her behavior and interpersonal communication.

Many animals regularly hoard food for future use, which appears to be an important adaptation to a seasonally and/or unpredictably changing environment. This food-hoarding paradigm is an excellent example of a natural system that has broadly influenced both theoretical and empirical work in the field of biology. The food-hoarding paradigm has played a major role in the conceptual framework of numerous fields from ecology (e.g. plant–animal interactions) and evolution (e.g. the coevolution of caching, spatial memory and the hippocampus) to psychology (e.g. memory and cognition) and neurobiology (e.g. neurogenesis and the neurobiology of learning and memory). Many food-hoarding animals retrieve caches by using spatial memory. This memory-based behavioural system has the inherent advantage of being tractable for study in both the field and laboratory and has been shaped by natural selection, which produces variation with strong fitness consequences in a variety of taxa. Thus, food hoarding is an excellent model for a highly integrative approach to understanding numerous questions across a variety of disciplines. Recently, there has been a surge of interest in the complexity of animal cognition such as future planning and episodic-like-memory as well as in the relationship between memory, the environment and the brain. In addition, new breakthroughs in neurobiology have enhanced our ability to address the mechanisms underlying these behaviours. Consequently, the field is necessarily becoming more integrative by assessing behavioural questions in the context of natural ecological systems and by addressing mechanisms through neurobiology and psychology, but, importantly, within an evolutionary and ecological framework. In this issue, we aim to bring together a series of papers providing a modern synthesis of ecology, psychology, physiology and neurobiology and identifying new directions and developments in the use of food-hoarding animals as a model system.

In the epilogue, a couple of kids befriend a shy stegosaurus; a different stegosaurus worries about the rise of mammals; and a tyrannosaurus presents a situation report. But mainly we consider reptilian brains, the relationship of brain size to intelligence, and the evolutionary success of mammals. Contrary to an internet meme, no one has a “reptilian” or “lizard” brain lurking within. Our entire brain is human. Regarding intelligence, brain organization matters as much as brain size and maybe more. Once dinosaurs became extinct, the mammals that supplanted them had much smaller brains than large dinosaurs had. Instead, the success of mammals depended on the emergence of the neocortex, a new part of the brain. Eventually, this evolutionary innovation came to dominate both the brain and the memories that it contains.

The objective of this study was to investigate the possible interactions of aptitude and treatment between (a) two teaching strategies and the cognitive styles of field-dependence and field-independence and (b) two modes of evaluation and the same cognitive styles. Subjects high on the cognitive style scale scored higher on all the posttests. However, no interactions of treatment and cognitive style were found. A significant interaction of sex and treatment occurred on measures of affect and motivation. It shows that female subjects preferred the passive-responding treatment over the active-responding treatment. They worked harder on their preferred treatment and also reached significantly higher performance scores. The exact opposite was true for the males who preferred, worked harder, and obtained higher performance scores with the active-responding treatment. The expected interaction between the cognitive styles and the modes of evaluation was not observed.

The relationship between the cognitive style variable of field dependence/independence and instructional treatments was investigated using high or low guidance in a unit on networks. The 97 prospective elementary teachers were tested on cognitive style (using the Group Embedded Figures Test) and on mathematical achievement (a measure of crystallized ability), and randomly assigned to treatments. Following instruction, students were tested for immediate achievement and then retested 5 weeks later. There were no interactions with field dependence/independence, but there was a significant (p < .05) interaction with crystallized ability on the retention test.

AbstractHow can entrepreneurs be effective when making decisions? To enrich current research on entrepreneurship and cognition, the present study shows how alertness and decision making are closely related. Prompted by the scant attention that scholars have paid to the link between alertness and the pathways of entrepreneurs’ thought, it proposes that being alert by adequately scanning and searching for information is likely to increase decision-making effectiveness. Distinguishing between rational and intuitive cognitive styles and based on a sample of 98 Italian entrepreneurs from small and medium manufacturing companies, the analysis shows that while a rational cognitive style significantly mediated the relationship, intuition did not play a role in shaping entrepreneurial decision-making effectiveness. The results suggest that developing individual alertness might not be sufficient for entrepreneurs to make effective decisions; a rational cognitive style might also be a key mechanism shaping this association.
