The Levenson Locus of Control Questionnaire was completed by 91 male and 82 female Australian high school students. Principal component analysis gave three interpretable factors: General External Control, Internal Control and Powerful Others Control. This factor pattern is different from those of Levenson (1974) and Walkey (1979). Further analyses utilizing mean scale scores and correlations showed some agreements and disagreements with these previous studies on scale characteristics. Evidence for the multidimensionality of the questionnaire and suggestions for further research on locus of control of high school students were also presented.

Locus of control and self-monitoring were measured in three age groups in Changchun, northeastern China: 164 junior high school students (12–15 yr.), 121 college students (16–26 yr.), and 46 adults (29–57 yr.). Analysis indicated that adults and college students scored higher on locus of control ( Ms = 10.0 and 9.2, scores indicating the number of external control beliefs affirmed) than high school students ( M = 6.1) and that adults scored lower on self-monitoring ( M = 8.7) than college and high school students ( Ms = 11.6 and 10.6). Such differences seem attributable to the interaction between individual development and some societal factors that are believed to foster external control beliefs and propensity to self-monitoring.

AbstractConflicts and disputes related to religion, race, and also ethnic groups, as well as the hedonism and egoism of Indonesian people today, are eroding the religious and national character of the nation. The Government of Indonesia, through the Ministry of Education and Culture, seeks to strengthen character education (PPK) as a way to grow, instill, and strengthen the positive character of the nation's children. This study aims to make scale the religious character of high school students based on the values of the main characters of the Ministry of Education and Culture by using the principal component analysis (PCA) technique. The population of this research is high school students in Jambi Province with 337 high school students with ages range 15 to 18 years. the sampling technique using purposive sampling. The results of the analysis through the Principal Component Analysis method with orthogonal rotation and varimax extraction resulted in six principal components that were successfully reduced, namely: components of peace, tolerance, protection, detachment, respect and friendship. Each component has a coefficient of 0,000 which means that each component measures a different aspect, each aspect independent of each other and not related to each other. The reliability test using the Guttman Method yields a value of λ = 0.781 which means the scale has a degree of reliability sufficient to measure the religious character of High School Students and can be used with other measurements to support validation of the measurement.

Internal-External locus of control and alcohol use were investigated among high school students, and it was found that external control was positively related to problem-oriented motivations and social complications. A developmental model for the relationship between I-E control and drinking is proposed.

Rotter's formulation of locus of control as the attribution of control over reinforcements to oneself (internal control) or to others (external control) is discussed in relation to the individual's belief in such supernatural powers as luck, chance, fate, superstition, God, astrology, etc. The validity of the Nowicki-Strickland Locus of Control Scale for Children in measuring levels of attribution to such external sources of control is assessed. For 182 high school students, a significant positive correlation was obtained between locus of control scores and magical beliefs scores, with an external orientation associated with higher levels of magical beliefs. No significant correlation was obtained between locus of control scores and belief in God. The results indicate that attribution of control to supernatural powers is a small, but relevant, component of an individual's control orientation and provide support for the continued study of the Nowicki-Strickland children's scale as a measure of locus of control.

Recent research suggests that individual values play a significant role in the structuring and functioning of a lifestyle. In the present study we empirically examine the relation between individual values and lifestyles and describe its peculiarities. The article covers the results of quantitative content analysis and principal component analysis, carried out for empirical indicators of lifestyle for Ukrainian high school students and undergraduates (N = 170). The results are presented by eleven components distinguished as a result of the empirical study, which describe individual lifestyles in their connection with basic human values. Our findings suggest that basic human values serve as the ground for individual lifestyle construction and life practices or arrangements.

Purpose: Research has confirmed that students’ mathematics values significantly affect their mathematics learning. Accordingly, understanding how students’ values form and change, especially during different learning stages, is an important topic. Design/Approach/Methods: This study administered a questionnaire to investigate the values of primary, junior high, and senior high school students in Eastern China. A principal component analysis was conducted to investigate the factor structure of the students’ learning values. Then, paired sample t-tests were used to examine the differences in the two continuous categories ranking of each group, and a one-way analysis of variance with a Brown–Forsythe test was used to test the differences in the ranking of each dimension by the different grade-level groups. Findings: We found that students’ mathematics learning values consist of seven elements: culture, memorization, technology, objectism, practice, understanding, and control. Students placed different degrees of importance on these seven elements at different learning stages. Additionally, we found that junior high school is a critical period of change in students’ values. Originality/Value: These findings will be invaluable to teachers and educators as they reflect on their teaching approaches. Moreover, the findings that students’ values undergo changes in the course of their schooling are important information for educators seeking to foster students’ learning.

A 12-item Depression Locus of Control Scale was given to 117 white high school students. The scale has three subscales, internal (4 items), chance (4 items), and powerful others (4 items). Reliability assessed by test-retest was .55 and Cronbach alphas were for the subscales listed above .63, .73, and .66, respectively. Content validity, criterion-related validity, construct validity, and discriminant validity were examined. Reading level was at the eighth grade. It is recommended that the more specific Depression Locus of Control Scale be used in studies of depression.
