The possibility remains that alexithymia is a culture-bound construct. The authors examined the validity and reliability of the Japanese versions of the 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale and the modified Beth Israel Hospital Psychosomatic Questionnaire, testing two samples of 473 college students and 149 psychiatric outpatients. The face validity and internal consistencies were suggested by factor analysis, adequate internal consistency, relatively high test-retest correlations, and high specificity and sensitivity. The Japanese versions of these two alexithymia scales therefore seem suitable for use among college students and psychiatric outpatients. However, there were several problematic points which may be associated with cultural differences.

We examined the validity and reliability of the Japanese version of the Emotional Intelligence Scale in two samples of 267 college students and 398 psychiatric outpatients. Suitable validity and reliability of this scale were suggested by high correlations with scores on the NEO Personality Inventory, adequate internal consistency, and relatively high test-retest correlations. The Emotional Intelligence Scale seems suitable for both clinically distressed populations as well as comparative groups such as college students.

We examined the association of emotional intelligence and alexithymic characteristics as the personality trait in cohorts of 267 college students and 398 psychiatric outpatients. Score on the Toronto Alexithymia Scale were significantly correlated with those on the Emotional Intelligence Scale, suggesting that alexithymic characteristics are related to lower emotional intelligence. In conclusion, these data suggest that emotional intelligence overlaps with alexithymia.

This study was conducted with the aim of developing The Text Evaluation Scale for Child Rights. There are fourdifferent sample chosen for the face validity, content validity and construct validity (for pilot scheme and main study)of the study. For face validity, a sample group of 3 experts chosen with the method of purposeful sampling includingthe researcher was formed. For content validity, snowball method was determined and studied with 12 experts. Forthe study of construct validity, random sampling method was performed for the sample selection in pilot studyinvolving 120 people and in main study involving 510 people. The theoretical framework of the scale was determined by means of the attempts, conventions, studies regarding thesubject basing upon the United Nations Organization Child Rights Convention and additional protocols to thisconvention. One could get minimum 40 and maximum 200 points from the five-point Likert scale which consists of28 positive and 12 negative (total 40) items. The scale has two sub-dimensions which are content and author. Thefact that Cronbach Alpha reliability coefficient is high regarding the sub-dimensions of the scale (authorsub-dimension= 0,822 content sub-dimension= 0,834) shows that the items in the sub-dimensions are consistent withone another. Cronbach Alpha value for the whole of the scale was determined as 0,90 which means that the scale ishighly reliable. Besides, in the scale, there are items of which factor loading value is higher than 0,45. When validityand reliability results are examined, it can be seen that the scale could be utilized to evaluate the text in terms ofbeing suitable for the child rights.

This study examined the association of scores for ego strength with the scores on a measure of alexithymia and with depressive symptoms in two samples of 260 college students and 92 psychiatric outpatients. In both samples, scores on alexithymia were significantly correlated with those for depressive symptoms; however, correlations became nonsignificant when scores for ego strength were controlled for. The results suggest that the association between alexithymia scores and depressive symptoms is decreased by lower scores for ego strength.

Abstract Background: Patient-centred healthcare is important, and patient experiences are considered a central pillar of quality in healthcare. The Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS®) is an instrument used to quantitatively evaluate patient perspectives. This study's objective was to conduct the translation and adaptation of the HCAHPS® into Japanese and to determine the validity and reliability of the translated version. Methods: We translated the original English HCAPHS® into Japanese based on standardized guidelines. The content validity was assessed by an expert panel of eight members and 12 discharged patients. The discharged patients assessed the face validity. We assessed the average of all raters’ evaluations at the item level (I-CVI and I-FVI) and the scale level (S-CVI and S-FVI). We evaluated each item and the entire questionnaire, with cut-off points of 0.78 for the I-CVI and I-FVI and 0.9 for the S-CVI and S-FVI.Results: Regarding the content validity, the S-CVI was 0.99, and the I-CVIs for the individual items ranged from 0.95 to 1.0. Regarding the face validity, the I-FVIs of all items except for Q26 were 0.78 or higher. The S-FVIs were 0.96 for clarity and 0.98 for comprehension. The expert panel reviewed the translated Japanese version of the HCAHPS and modified it based on the patient raters' feedback. Conclusions: The translated HCAHPS® content is well adapted to the local context. Until now, there has been no standard instrument to measure the perspectives of hospitalized patients in Japan. The translated HCAHPS® is expected to have utility for measuring the quality of health indicators.Trial registration:No applicable.

Abstract- Hereditary non-polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) is the most frequent autosomal dominant predisposition for development of colorectal cancer (CRC) caused by germline defects in mismatch repair (MMR) genes. Current study was aimed to find genetic variations in MSH2 and MLH1 genes and their correlation with the serum levels of Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) in seven Iranian HNPCC families. Seven unrelated Iranian families including 11 HNPCC patients and 7 affected family members were selected. They were initially screened for mutations in exons 7 of MSH2 and exon 15 of MLH1 gene through polymerase chain reaction single-strand conformation polymorphism (PCR-SSCP). Positive PCR results were further analyzed through exon sequencing. Serum CEA level was determined using the ELISA test. PCRSSCP was positive in 8 out of 18 patients (44%) for exons 7 of MSH2 gene, whereas two samples (11%) demonstrated to bear a mutation in exon 15 of the MLH1 gene. Sequencing analysis of both amplified exons in positive and negative samples have confirmed no mutation in negative samples while revealed 5 and 7 novel mutations in exons 7 and 15, respectively. The mean serum concentration of CEA had a significant difference between HNPCC patients and their healthy family members. Our results demonstrated that the PCR-SSCP method has high specificity and sensitivity in the first step of mutation screening of HNPCC families. High frequency of novel alterations found in the current assay may revise the mutation screening of MSH2 and MLH1 genes and abet further assessment of their frequency among individual HNPCC patients.

Background: To investigate any subject, a scholar needs a suitable instrument to collect the required information with the utmost accuracy and the least amount of error. Therefore, this study aimed at designing and conducting a psychometric analysis of an assessment instrument for innovation capabilities of Medical Sciences Universities using the Cube Model Approach. Methods: This study began by searching in questionnaires in the fields of input and process, considering innovation outcomes. Accordingly, a preliminary questionnaire was developed, and in the second stage, to determine the validity of the designed instrument, the face validity, content validity, and construct validity of the instrument were approved, and in the third stage, using Cronbach's alpha, its reliability was assessed. At first 200 phrases were obtained, finally, 25 questions were initially approved in three areas of structure (input), innovation processes, and output. All the phrases were retained in the face validity and content validity carried out quantitatively and qualitatively. Results: Exploratory Factor Analysis was performed on 25 items, and finally the terms were set in six factors. These factors explained 53.19% of the total variance. The rotated factor loading for all questions was obtained more than 0.3, and therefore, no questions were eliminated. Calculation of the Cronbach's alpha coefficient confirmed the high internal consistency of the questionnaire (0.762). Conclusion: This instrument was designed for the first time in the context of Iranian academic culture and seems to be a suitable instrument for the assessment of innovation capabilities, considering its adequate validity and reliability, simplicity, and practicality.

The psychometric properties of the short form of the Beck Depression Inventory were studied in two Iranian groups. The inventory was translated into Persian and 12 Iranian bilingual judges confirmed the soundness of the translation. The sample comprised two groups of Iranian college students, and data were analyzed separately for each group. Group I consisted of 232 Iranian students (156 men, 76 women) who were studying in American universities, and Group II comprised 305 Iranian students (168 men, 137 women) studying in Iranian universities. In addition to the depression inventory, measures of anxiety, neuroticism, psychoticism, loneliness, misanthropy, locus of control, self-esteem, and extroversion were obtained. The item-total score correlations were mostly in the upper fifties and sixties. The coefficient alpha estimates of reliability were .85 and .83 in Groups I and II, respectively. Descriptive statistics and test-retest reliability were reported. Significantly positive correlations between the scores of the depression inventory and measures of anxiety, neuroticism, psychoticism, loneliness, misanthropy and externality of locus of control were found. Negative correlations also were obtained between scores on the depression inventory and self-esteem, and extroversion. Comparisons of the two samples of male and female subjects supported the construct validity of the inventory. The results provided evidence which supported the validity and reliability of the depression inventory in Iranian college students.
