Abstract The paper outlines the peculiarities of Applied Linguistics as a branch of science and specialty provided by universities worldwide. Its scope, relevance in modern labour market and immediate relation to communication and language studies have been analyzed. Its advantages as a flourishing educational program for tertiary education and as an occupation in modern digital world with diverse realms of communication and language application have been substantiated. A wide range of activities pressuposed by Applied Linguistics study have been outlined: researching language in classrooms (classroom-based research); work with different kinds of written and spoken texts (corpus linguistics); approaching language learning (learner autonomy); testing and assessment of language learning; expanding vocabulary (including multiword expressions); dictionary making; interpretation and translation; studies of bilingualism and multilingualism. It has been determined that five most important concepts are basic for understanding the relation of Applied Linguistics to language and communication studies: Functional Linguistics, Language and its Application, Communicative Competence; Cognitive Discourse Analysis, Conceptual Blending Theory, and Contemporary Discourse Analysis; Barriers in Specialized Translation fields and their overcoming (by means of technology); Linguistics and Culture; Language hierarchy, authority, policy, and planning. Applied Linguistics program in tertiary education provides students with necessary studies in relation to language and communication in terms of language communication, its components, conditions of successful communication and cooperation; language etiquette; speech codes, their switching and mixing; speech acts and their types; context of culture, situation and co-texts; assembling and working with corpora; researching collocations and units of meaning. Undergoing the program of Applied Linguistics in tertiary education students can broaden knowledge of linguistics and language; deal with contemporary issues concerning the diversity of languages and cultures in societies; learn and teach foreign languages; eliminate language and communication gaps between people of different cultures; enhance the development of languages and communication skills.

Despite the contributions language centres across the globe have made to language education and higher education in general, few publications have a specific focus on research work produced by language centre faculty. The purpose of this reviewed, edited volume entitled Tertiary education language learning: a collection of research, consisting of eight chapters, is to fill some of this gap by giving insights into the type of research conducted in various fields of applied linguistics in a university language centre context. The volume may be of interest to university language centre practitioners and researchers, university policymakers and administrators, general language practitioners, teacher trainers, and university curriculum academic bodies. The editors hope that the present publication will be viewed as a valuable contribution to the literature and a worthy scholarly achievement.

Before John Searle wrote the book of Speech Acts, he wrote an article about “What is a Speech Act?” (in Philosophy in America, Max Black, ed. (Ithaca, N.Y.: Cornell University Press, 1965), 221–239). He was born in Denver in 1932. He spent some seven years in Oxford, beginning as an undergraduate in the autumn of 1952 with a Rhodes Scholarship, and concluding as a Lecturer in Philosophy at Christ Church. He has spent almost all of his subsequent life as Professor of Philosophy in Berkeley according to Smith (2003). This article aims to review the speech act theories by Searle (1969) to know what the theories of speech acts according to him to aid researchers understand more on how to apply it in real social life. Moreover, this article’s references are accurate (valid) and they well argued. This article is highly recommended for the philosopher, specialists and analysts in the field of pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and conversational analysis, communication studies who have a significant part in this study. Therefore, this paper seen the speech act theories by Searle (1969) will be more effective if we know and understand more about the speech act theories by Searle (1969) to use it in real social life.

Plenty of books have written in Discourse Analysis, and the book, Directions in Discourse Analysis: Theory & Method, is another welcomed addition to this vital field of Applied Linguistics. Many books in this field are limited to a specific framework of discourse analysis (Coulthard, 1992; Christie, 2002; Gee, 1999; Walsh, 2006) to name but a few. Introducing a specific theoretical framework and orientation has almost been a tradition in preparing such textbooks, while it seems that there is a need for publications which take into account the fast-growing field of discourse analysis, where discerning similarities and differences are becoming subtle. I think similar to Hyland & Paltridge (2011), Directions in Discourse Analysis: Theory & Method by Professor Jalilifar is another attempt to meet such a need. As the title of the book indicates, the emphasis is on a wide range of recent approaches, wherein the author presents them under a separate but a related chapter. He successfully brings together similar and contradictory themes under a single topic.

This paper presents a critique of politeness theories. As such, it aims to show the shortcomings and defects of the different theoretical foundations and pragmatic models of politeness. This work is hopefully supposed to be significant for the specialists and analysts in the field of pragmatics, discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and conversational analysis, ethnomethodology and communication studies. On the basis of the results of the criticism, it has been concluded that politeness theories suffer from different shortcomings and problems that lessen their efficiency in the successful analysis of interactive communication. Universalism, for instance, is not well-defined by Brown and Levinsons’ theory. Leech’s model is limited to some speech acts. Besides, his model is not clear whether to cover culture-specific as well as cross-cultural aspects of communication.

В работе текст памятника развитого жреческого политеистического культа рассматривается как манифестация ритуальной вербальной практики, сохранившей проявления архаической шаманской сакральной деятельности. Исследование осуществлялось на языковом материале «Ригведы» — корпуса древнейших текстов, генетически восходящих ко времени праиндоевропейского единства и в ряде черт типологически близких евразийскому шаманизму. В фокусе внимания оказывается коммуникативный характер речевой деятельности шамана — наделенного особыми способностями представителя сообщества, который вступает в вербальное взаимодействие с миром духов. Предмет исследования составляют вопросительные речевые акты, которые предстают одним из важных элементов шаманской обрядности. Актуальность исследования обусловлена существенным влиянием шаманизма на становление современной культуры. Достижению цели способствовало решение таких исследовательских задач, как описание и анализ разных типов вопросительных речевых актов «Ригведы», а также выявление их коммуникативных интенций в контексте гимна и связанной с ним ритуальной практики. В работе функциональный анализ вопросительных речевых актов продуктивно дополняется привлечением методов и данных таких дисциплин, как коммуникативистика, прагмалингвистика, история, этнография, религиоведение. Методы лингвистического наблюдения и описания, контекстуального и статистического анализа, фонематические, синтаксические и семантические наблюдения дополнены компаративистским анализом изданного обрядового материала сибирского шаманизма. В работе находит применение и историко-генетический анализ текста «Ригведы». Выявление разных по времени напластований памятника позволяет точнее установить прагматику принадлежащих им вопросов. Автор приходит к выводу о том, что как в шаманской практике, так и в ведийских гимнах вопросы выполняют основные функции коммуникации: сообщение, общение и воздействие. Исследование демонстрирует, что помимо неспецифической прагматики вопросы в ритуальной практике реализуют магико-заклинательную функцию речи. Устанавливаются происхождение и функции вопросов космогонических гимнов. Доказывается их поздний характер и переходное положение от магических вербальных действий к функциям компонента в структуре спекулятивных построений. The subject of the study is interrogative speech acts which appear to be one of the markers of the shamanic ritualism. The research work was carried out on the linguistic data of the Rigveda genetically traced to the times of Proto-Indo-European unity and in the range of traits typologically relevant to the Eurasian shamanism. The author raises the issue if the questions presented in the monuments of developed priestly cult refer to the shamanic verbal practice. The achievement of the outlined objective was provided by solving such research problems as description and analysis of different types of interrogative speech acts of the Rigveda, revealing their communicative intentions in the context of hymns and ritual practice. In the paper the functional analysis of interrogative speech acts is productively complemented with appealing to approaches and data of such scientific disciplines as communication studies, pragmalinguistics, history, ethnography, folklore and religion studies. In addition to the descriptive method as well as the contextual analysis and the statistical technology the author makes use of comparative analysis of the published ceremonial material of shamanism. Historical and genetic analysis of the text of the Rigveda also finds its application in the study. The author elicits that both in shamanic activity and in the Vedic hymns questions fulfil general functions of communication: message, interaction and impact. The paper demonstrates that apart from nonspecific pragmatic the questions in ceremonial practice objectivate the magical and invocatory speech function. Light is thrown upon the genesis and functions of questions of the cosmogonic hymns.

This issue is my first edited volume of the Annual Review of Applied Linguistics (ARAL). Each year ARAL focuses on a specific theme, but about every five years it covers a range of mostly unrelated topics in a survey issue. Volume 30 was scheduled to be a survey issue, and after some discussion with the editorial directors, I decided to keep this tradition. Thus, I had the daunting task of choosing four broad topics, and then within each broad topic, a few narrow topics on which to invite scholars to write review articles. I chose a wide range of areas as a statement that I see the field of applied linguistics as not only being broad but as also representing a range of perspectives on theory and research methods. For example, I have included sections both on language socialization and on linguistic theory (mostly formal) in second language acquisition. I felt that these two areas were quite far apart with regard to the view that researchers in those areas held, but in my mind, both social and cognitive approaches to language learning and use are valid and simply seek to answer different questions. In the section on research methods, the articles focus on using both cognitive and social approaches, as well as quantitative and qualitative methods. The articles on heritage language learning focus on acquisition, policy, pedagogy, and sociocultural issues.

Purpose Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) is an intervention approach that can promote communication and language in children with multiple disabilities who are beginning communicators. While a wide range of AAC technologies are available, little is known about the comparative effects of specific technology options. Given that engagement can be low for beginning communicators with multiple disabilities, the current study provides initial information about the comparative effects of 2 AAC technology options—high-tech visual scene displays (VSDs) and low-tech isolated picture symbols—on engagement. Method Three elementary-age beginning communicators with multiple disabilities participated. The study used a single-subject, alternating treatment design with each technology serving as a condition. Participants interacted with their school speech-language pathologists using each of the 2 technologies across 5 sessions in a block randomized order. Results According to visual analysis and nonoverlap of all pairs calculations, all 3 participants demonstrated more engagement with the high-tech VSDs than the low-tech isolated picture symbols as measured by their seconds of gaze toward each technology option. Despite the difference in engagement observed, there was no clear difference across the 2 conditions in engagement toward the communication partner or use of the AAC. Conclusions Clinicians can consider measuring engagement when evaluating AAC technology options for children with multiple disabilities and should consider evaluating high-tech VSDs as 1 technology option for them. Future research must explore the extent to which differences in engagement to particular AAC technologies result in differences in communication and language learning over time as might be expected.

Introduction. The purpose of our work was to justify the need to improve the legislative, regulatory and methodological framework and preventative measures in relation to the spread of parasitic infections in the provision of medical care. There is a wide range of pathogens of parasitic infestations that are transmitted to humans through various medical manipulations and interventions carried out in various medical institutions. Contaminated care items and furnishings, medical instruments and equipment, solutions for infusion therapy, medical personnel’s clothing and hands, reusable medical products, drinking water, bedding, suture and dressing materials can serve as a major factor in the spread of parasitic infections in the provision of medical care. Purpose of research is the study of the structure and SMP of parasitic origin, circulating on the objects of the production environment in multi-profile medical and preventive institutions of stationary type in order to prevent the occurrence of their spread within medical institutions. Material and methods. The material for the study was flushes taken from the production environment in 3 multi-profile treatment and prevention institutions of inpatient type: a multi-specialty hospital, a maternity hospital and a hospital specializing in the treatment of patients with intestinal diseases for the eggs of worms and cysts of pathogenic protozoa. Results. During the 2-year monitoring of medical preventive institutions, a landscape of parasitic contamination was found to be obtained from the flushes taken from the production environment objects in the premises surveyed as part of the research work. Discussions. In the course of research, the risk of developing ISMP of parasitic origin was found to be determined by the degree of epidemiological safety of the hospital environment, the number and invasiveness of treatment and diagnostic manipulations and various medical technologies. Conclusion. It is necessary to conduct an expert assessment of regulatory and methodological documents in the field of epidemiological surveillance and sanitary and hygienic measures for the prevention of medical aid related infections of parasitic origin, to optimize the regulatory and methodological base, to develop a number of preventive measures aimed at stopping the spread of parasitic infections in the medical network.
