AbstractThe paper presents investigations concerning the design and realization of photonic structures with grating couplers. The first part of the paper deals with basic theoretical information on photonic structures with grating couplers and their application in optoelectronics. The further part presents the results of numerical investigations on photonic structures with grating couplers and shows the influence of geometrical parameters on the effectiveness of the input and output of optic power into and out of this photonic structure. The paper also provides the results of experimental investigations on a wideband gap semiconductor, viz. zinc oxide ZnO, as well as its application in planar waveguide structures and photonic structures with grating couplers.

Thermal shrink fit chucks are widely used in high performance machining where excellent concentricity and high torque transmission are required. It was reported that in those milling operations, severe damage of tools, workpieces, and also machine tools occurs due to an extraction of the milling tool out of the shrink fit chuck during the process. Although, theoretically the interference fit assembly should withstand certain process forces, milling tools are apparently pulled out under special process conditions. The resulting increase of the cutting depth often leads to tool overload and breakage. So far, the phenomenon of tool extraction could not be explained. This paper presents an experimental approach of the investigation of the phenomenon of axial tool extraction. Therefore, a unique type of test rig for main spindles and tool interfaces is used. Experimental investigations on dynamic force and torque combinations leading to tool extraction are described. Results show, that the holding force is not only affected by geometrical parameters of the shrink fit chuck, but also by the applied dynamic load.

The paper reports the substantiation of the stabilization technology for geometrical parameters of elastic plates in pressure sensors carried out by means of residual stresses affected by ultrasonic oscillations. For the confirmation of the efficiency of the developed ultrasonic stabilization technology in accordance with the procedure described the experimental investigations are carried out. The results of the experimental study are presented by the equation of regression and diagrams of residual stresses dependences upon technological factors. Amplitudes of ultrasonic oscillations, a static force of tool pressure and machining duration were assumed as variable technological factors. High productivity and efficiency of the ultrasonic technology for elastic plate stabilization are proved experimentally. As a result of the experiment there are defined rational values of ultrasonic processing modes for specific geometrical and physical-mechanical parameters of a plate.

Assuring a ship’s maneuverability under diverse conditions is a fundamental requirement for safe and economic ship operations. Considering the introduction of the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) for new ships and the related decreasing installed power on ships, the necessity arose to more accurately predict the maneuverability of ships in severe seas, strong winds, and confined waters. To address these issues, extensive experimental and numerical investigations were performed within the European funded Project SHOPERA. Here, second order forces and moments for a containership and a tanker were measured in model tests and computed by solving the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations. Generally, these measured and computed second order loads (drift forces and yaw moments, added resistance) compared favorably. Furthermore, the effects of waves on zig-zag and turning circle maneuvers were investigated.

AbstractThe aim of the presented investigations was to develop a technique of producing Bragg’s grating couplers on planar waveguides. Waveguides are obtained by means of the sol-gel technology. The introduction of a light beam into the structure of the waveguide is in the case of planar or strip optical systems always an essential technical problem, requiring simple and reproducible solutions without extending excessively the waveguide structure. The paper presents a technology of producing grating couplers by impressing the pattern of the network while forming the planar waveguide structure applying the sol-gel method. Some remarks concerning the sol-gel technology are also presented. The results of investigations on grating couplers obtained in such a way have been discussed, too.Attention has been drawn to the possibility of using such structures in optoelectronic sensors, particularly gas sensors, including sensors of water vapour as well as toxic gases.

Composite materials are widely used in mechanical engineering, but at edge cutting machining, in particular, during milling these materials a number of peculiarities arise which must be taken into account at the definition of cutting modes and design-geometrical parameters of cutters. Besides, new composite materials machining does not allow using effectively the recommendations developed earlier. In such a way, to solve such a problem it is necessary to carry out experimental investigations on the analysis of the influence of milling mode characteristics and design-geometrical of a tool upon values of roughness of a surface processed and tool wear. As a cutter for investigations there were taken hardmetal endmilling cutters of TC-8 (tungstencobalt) type, the experimental samples – pipes made of composite material with oblique longi-tudinal-transverse fiber winding (OLTFW). As varied parameters were adopted cutting modes: cutting speed V, m/min, feed S, mm/tooth and milling depth t, mm. During the experiments were controlled the following parameters: tool wear Δ, mkm, roughness of the surface Ra, mkm and a depth of a faulty layer h, mkm. To carry out the experiments there was offered an original design of an assembly milling cutter which allows defining in an experimental way optimum geo-metrical parameters of a tools to achieve output milling parameters specified. On the basis of experiments data there are obtained dependences allowing the estimate of parameter modes influence upon the period of cutter duration at the same time a temperature is affected mostly by a milling depth and a feed on a tooth affects the wear of an end flank.

The accurate simulation and the optimization of extrusion processes can be a helpful technique to ensure producibility of complex aluminum profiles, for example for the automobile industry. Currently, the die designing is based on expert’s knowledge and cost-intensive prototyping. The paper deals with numerical investigations based on finite element simulations as well as experimental investigations of an industrial extrusion process. A newly developed method for longitudinal seam weld prediction is applied to analyze the position of the longitudinal welding line and the welding quality.
