Abstract This article reveals factors that need to be considered by facilitating institutions and organisations prior to adoption of scientific indicators in community-based monitoring of mangrove ecosystems; as a necessary route towards achieving effective participation and meaningful experiential learning processes. It employs an Experiential Learning Intervention Workshop (ELIW) as a key methodological tool and a useful space for analysing conditions that are necessary for adoption of scientific frameworks in the Tanzanian coastal area. ELIW also offers an opportunity for local people to share knowledge and decide the kind of input required for monitoring mangroves and fisheries.

Mangrove ecotourism in the Mempawah coastal area began to be developed and initiated by local communities who are concerned in the sustainability of the mangrove ecosystem. This is also supported by the increasing number of tourists to visit ecotourism, so that the development of ecotourism needs to be supported by tourist attractiveness as well as learning to tourists to care about their environment in accordance with the principles of ecotourism namely responsible travel to natural areas, conserving the environment and improving the well-being of local people. This paper focuses on analyzing the potential value of community-based ecotourism objects and its attractiveness. The assessment indicator based on the guidelines for assessment of natural tourism attractiveness was used to assess the objects and attractiveness in three specific ecotourism locations which are managed by local communities in Mempawah, namely Pasir, Bakau, and Mendalok Village. This study involves the participation of tourists who have visited the  ecotourism site. The study found that the potential value of the object and attractiveness mangrove ecotourism in Mempawah Area was 3,105 with an average score of 388 meaning that it ispotentially developed, and also increasing recommendations related to community-based ecotourism development.

Abstract: This article presents Norwegian Kindergarten Teacher students’ and Kindergarten staff’s use of Digital Storytelling (DS), a tool for reflection and learning in higher education. The field of DS’ research focus on the use of personal narratives in the learning process, multimedia, and the creative process in developing identity and voice in a social context: the Story Circle. The frame is Workplace-based Kindergarten Teacher Education. The article is based on a case: student Yvonne’s work with DS in her kindergarten. Data is collected through observation and analyzed in light of theories on learning in practice, concretized to Kolb's experiential learning cycle. Results indicate that DS is a beneficial approach for facilitating both individual and collective reflection. A significant condition is that kindergarten staff participates in students' learning processes. Sammendrag: Artikkelen tar for seg barnehagelærerstudenters og barnehageansattes bruk av digital historiefortelling (DH), som er en arbeidsmåte for refleksjon og læring i høyere utdanning. DH kjennetegnes ved: fortellingens betydningen for læring i forhold til tradisjonell sakprosa, den multimodale dimensjonen og den kreative prosessen hvor fortellingen blir til i en sosial kontekst: fortellersirkelen. Rammen er Arbeidsplassbasert barnehagelærerutdanning. Artikkelen baseres på et case: studenten Yvonnes arbeid med DH i egen barnehage. Data er innhentet gjennom observasjon og fortolkes i lys av teorier om læring i praksis, konkretisert til Kolbs erfaringslæringsmodell. Jeg viser at DH tilrettelegger for individuell og kollektiv refleksjon for både studenter og barnehageansatte. Forutsetningen er at ansatte gis muligheter til å delta i studentenes læringsprosesser.

Tanjung Tedung Coastal Coast is located in Tanjung Pura Village, Sungai Selan Subdistrict, Bangka Tengah. Regency which has the potential to be developed into a mangrove ecowista area, because almost along the coastal area is overgrown with ecosystem mengrove. This study aims to identify the potential of mangrove ecosystems and calculate the Tourist Compatibility Index (IKW) potential of mangrove area as ecotourism area of mangrove. The data were collected from March to April 2018 in Tanjung Tedung Coastal Coast. The research method used is Purposive Sampling. Research area taken as many as 3 stations. The data analysis is based on tourism conformity index matrix (IKW). Data of mangrove tourism conformity parameter consisting of: mangrove thickness, mangrove density, mangrove species, tidal and biota object. The result of measurement of mangrove tourism match parameters are thickness at station I worth 303,57 m, station II worth 366,57 m and station III worth 1,061,44 m. Density of station I with value 0.11 ind / m². Station II worth 0.10 ind / m² and station III with value 0.16 ind / m². Found 9 Species of mangroves and other biota such as: fish, shrimp, crab, molluscs, reptiles, birds and other biota. The result of conformity analysis to be used as ecotourism area with IKW value of station I worth 78.95% with Appropriate category. Abstract Coastal management is an important issue for most regions of the world. This is because the initial activities in the fisheries and marine sector began in this area, ranging from capture fisheries, aquaculture, processing of fishery products to marketing. But in reality the management of coastal areas is not optimal and evenly distributed, even though fishery and marine resources have high economic and ecological value, as happened in the coastal area of Torokeku Village. This study aims to determine the appropriate community development approach strategy through the eco blue sea concept in order to maintain fisheries and marine resources found in the coastal area of the Bajo tribal community in Torokeku Village, South Konawe Regency. The research was conducted using descriptive qualitative analysis method. Collecting data through direct survey techniques in the field. The results obtained show that community-based coastal area management by seeking the development of coastal communities can be carried out through structural and non-structural approaches, so that in order to maintain these resources, their management must be carried out in a planned and integrated manner and able to provide the greatest benefit to all stakeholders, especially coastal communities, and minimize impacts and conflicts that may potentially occur.

Sipiso-piso Waterfall located in Karo District, North Sumatra can be used as a superior attraction because it has great potential to be developed compared to other attractions around Lake Toba because this waterfall is one of the most popular tourist attractions. However, there are several obstacles on the development of Sipiso-piso Waterfall tourism such as tourism stakeholders who do not cooperate well such as the provision of supporting facilities that should be provided by the tour manager, namely the Karo District government instead, provided by the local community. Based on this phenomenon, it is necessary to know the management of Sipiso-piso Waterfall and how much participation of local people in the management of Sipiso-piso Waterfall. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative. This research aims to To find out how to manage Sipiso-piso waterfall in Karo District, North Sumatra To find out how far the participation of local people in the management of Sipiso-piso waterfall. Data collection techniques using observation, interviews, and literature. Determination of informants using Purposive Sampling techniques. The results of this research is that the  community in the management of Sipiso-Piso Water Tourism Attraction at the planning stage is at the encouraged participation type, at the community organizing stage is at the spontaneous participation as well as at the mobilization stage, while at the community supervision stage is at the encouraged participation type.   Keywords: participation, development, local community

Forest provides basic ecosystem services to adjacent local people welfare. Ecotourism is one of the goverment program to improve the livelihood, by full local people involvement on planning, management and evaluation. Margasari, East L ampung, with its 700 ha mangrove forest, has a ahigh potential natural resources to develop community based ecotourism program. Study on evaluating mangrove forestas community based ecotourism was conducted in Lampung Mangrove Center, Margasari, East Lampung. collected data were analyzed qualitatively using SWOT with hope to obtain a mangrove forest potential for community-based ecotourism development. Potential of mangrove forests in LMC into category medium. Total of 98 % agreed if the community perception was developed as a community-based ecotourism. Motivation tourists visiting as much as 27 % for research, 37 % for recreation and rest along the mangroves by boat (36 %). LMC real carrying capacity of area can accommodate as many as 170 people / day, while the carrying capacity of the facility and amenitas 174 people / visit. SWOT analysis illustrates the mangrove forests in LMC has potential to be developed as a community-based ecotourism destination.

This practice note describes the unique features of, and lessons learned from UEval, an innovative one-week ‘evaluation institute’ at the Faculty of Extension, University of Alberta. This initiative responds to an identified community and university need to provide contextual and socially relevant evaluation-focused educational opportunities to learners across disciplines and sectors. UEval is a guided by principles of participatory and experiential learning, and brings together undergraduates, graduates and community professionals as co-learners, for a mutually beneficial and sustainable educational experience. During the week, learners explore and apply evaluation theory through project-based curricula, and develop evaluative responses to community-informed issues.


The study critically analyses how the local people in Ga West municipality perceive local participation and socio-cultural factors that influence local participation. The study used the mixed method design. The lottery method of the simple random sampling technique coupled with Neuman and Neuman’s (2006) recommendation on random convenience sampling were used to sample and collect data from 187 respondents. The study revealed that local participation provides the local people employment avenues. It was revealed that developmental projects brought to their communities do not allow the local people to be involved at the planning and implementation phases. The study further revealed that women were of the opinion that projects brought to them were not feminine enough and did not build their capacity. Education, social cohesion, peace and stability were among some of the sociocultural factors that influence participation. The study again recommended that every community member should participate, regardless of their gender, ethnic group or socio-cultural differences.
