Teaching Information System Technology in Partnership with IT CompaniesWe describe an example of partnership between a university and some major IT companies - IBM and Microsoft - to teach a course on information systems technology. The course is taught in the fifth (final) year of the university undergraduate program when students have already mastered the basic theoretical knowledge of information system development. For this reason, the course content was restructured to pay more attention to practical experience and the learning opportunities available within the environment of professional industry. During the course, students get acquainted with IBM and Microsoft products and the tools that support the development of online information systems. Special attention is devoted to group project work, which is not just intended for the improvement of technical skills, but also for the aqusition of transferrable skills such as teamwork, management/leadership, planning and organizing, presentation and documentation, searching for information, etc. We describe our experience from teaching the course in the academic years 2005/06 and 2006/07. A description of the course content is given and the results of a survey among the students are presented. Students responded favourably to the new approach and found the course very useful and interesting.

This paper was presented at the conference ‘Integrating spatial technologies and ecological principles for a new age in fire management’, Boise, Idaho, USA, June 1999 Fire modeling and information system technology play an important supporting role in fuel and fire management. Modeling is used to examine alternative fuel treatment options, project potential ecosystem changes, and assess risk to life and property. Models are also used to develop fire prescriptions, conduct prescribed fire operations, and predict fire behavior. Fire models and information systems have greatly influenced fuel assessment methods. As an example, we examine the evolution of technology used to put Rothermel’s fire spread model into application. A review of fire and fuel modeling terminology is given, and the relationship between fire models and fuel models is explained. We review current fire modeling work and the influence that it will have on fuel characterization. Finally, we discuss opportunities and challenges involved in the use of advanced computers, the Internet, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and remote sensing in fire and fuel management.

Background: As one of batik producer city in Indonesia, Pekalongan city needs medium and infrastructure that able to provide the information needed by either the local government or the society.  The need about information of Batik city center in Pekalongan will provide the information about the batik center for the local government in the potency, obstacle and the needs of Small and Medium Batik Enterprises Centre to improve the Batik Production. Objective: The research is aimed at mapping the potency of batik center in Pekalongan city by implementing Geographic Information System Technology. The information about batik center in Pekalongan city needs to be maintained.  The maintenance in information field is needed upon the batik center in Pekalongan. Methods: The method used in mapping the batik potency in Pekalongan city is the Geographic Information System (GIS) by providing the information based on a spatial data.  Whereas the waterfall system development is used in developing the GIS.Results: The research resulted the application in mapping the batik center with GIS based that provide reference to the related parties about information and planning as well as investment in batik business. Conclusion: The system is able to provide the information needed by users, such as business mapping, the mapping about the amount of business in one area, the batik potency in each district that is figured for mapping location.

Basically, every rental service is a business that serves to maintain, manage, and utilize rental tools that are then provided to customers. The development of this company, the need for technology is needed to support the work of the system to more quickly and efficiently in processing letters, bill notes and notes change goods, and displays notification information in the form of schedule events to facilitate the provision of information directly to all employees. Current conditions in the rental SUYONO in running its business activities have not used the information system technology so that in the operation of the operational activities are still slow. SUYONO rental requires an information system which will support its business activities. Information System users are not only used in information and communications technology (ICT) organizations but also used by companies to support their business activities. From some shortcomings that exist in the company then the researcher is interested to make a Rental Apparatus Party with the Notification System, so the rental SUYONO in performing its operations more easily and quickly. The existence of the application of party equipment rental can help SUYONO rental to process the data in accordance with the necessary needs, as well as Output results in the form of travel documents, the bill notes, change notes, and billing reports can speed up the presentation process. With the notification in the form of event schedule information displayed on the second screen can facilitate both for employees and office staff in providing information on the event schedule directly.   Keywords: Information Systems, Party Equipment Rental, Notifications, SUYONO

The purpose of this study is to find the requirement of Information Systems and Information Technology (IS/IT) in the development of the construction of Base Transceiver Station tower (BTS). The methodology that is used is the method of Ward and Peppard. The relevant data were extracted from interviews with the management. Questionnaires were distributed to 16 respondents, and observation was made accordingly. The results of this study are in the form of the application portfolio recommendation, proposal of the IT Division enhancement and the action time of IS/IT. The planning of IS/IT is as a guiding framework for the development of future changes at PT. Lintas Group. Keywords: Information System, Technology Information, application portfolio, telecommunication.

The relevance of the communication in the complex information system (IS) development projects is becoming issue of primary importance. Various researches show that many projects failed due to inadequate management of communication. Project data exchange is still not performed in a structured and standardised manner, which leads to misunderstandings between team members. Too many complex IS projects do not have established an adequate project communication management subsystems. This paper analyses results of a survey performed on information technology (IT) professionals and presents degree of communication problems during various project phases. (This research was supported by the Croatian Ministry of Science and Technology under projects: "Strategic planning of Information Systems" and "Information Systems Security.) It reveals that average rating of a degree of communication problems varies at different project stages and among different communication subjects. The paper also proposes software tools that, if properly used, might enhance project communication. Such technologies are still not completely mature but they are developing fast and might play an important role in project management, by providing support to its holism.

In the last decade a new generation of information systems (ISs), such as Web-based information systems and knowledge management support systems, have emerged in response to ever-changing organizational needs. Therefore, the need for new “Information System Design Theories” for the emerging ISs is recognized. According to Walls, Widmeyer, and El-Sawy (1992), an “IS design theory” must have two aspects?one dealing with the description of the system and one dealing with the prescription, that is, the process of developing of the system. The prescription aspect includes a description of procedures and guidelines for system development. In addition, these two aspects must be grounded on theories from natural or social sciences (i.e., kernel theories). As information systems are socio-technical phenomena in which social and technical factors interweave the ways in which people work, the issue of “how to integrate the work activity and social context of users into the IS which is being designed” becomes one of the principal problems of IS development (Bai & Lindberg, 1999). Therefore, the development of new IS design theories requires a closer look at the system theories that go beyond the traditional system theory that is based, among other things, on Cartesian dualism (i.e., mind/body or cognition/action) and on a model of cognition as the processing of representational information (Mingers, 2001). One of the candidate theories is the theory of autopoiesis, which can be best viewed as a system-grounded way of thinking with biological foundations, together with its extension into social domain.
