In the face of climate change, extreme climates are becoming more frequent. There were severe droughts in Taiwan in 2020, 2014–2015, and 2002. In these years, the paddy fields were kept fallow to save water and transfer agricultural water to non-agricultural use. On the other hand, with global warming, the existence of paddy fields may be one of the natural solutions to regional temperature mitigation. This study used remote sensing to quantify the difference in temperature between paddy fields and urban areas. The result of overall surface temperature deductive analysis revealed that the temperature in the whole Taoyuan research area was 1.2 °C higher in 2002 than in 2003 because of fallowing of the paddy field, while in the Hsinchu research area, it was 1.5 °C higher in 2002 than in 2003, due to the same reason described above. In terms of the difference in land use, for the Hsinchu research area, the surface temperature deductive result showed that the average paddy field temperature in 2002 was 22.3 °C (sample area average), which was 7.7 °C lower than that of the building and road point and 4.3 °C lower than that of the bare land point. The average paddy field temperature in 2003 was 19.2 °C (sample area average), which was 10.1 °C lower than that of the building and road point and 8.3 °C lower than that of the bare land point. Then this study evaluated the economic valuation of the paddy field cooling effect using the contingent valuation method. Through the paddy field cooling effect and in the face of worsening extreme global climate, the willingness to pay (WTP) of the respondents in Taiwan for a decrease of 1 °C with regard to the regional microclimate was evaluated. It was found that people in Taiwan are willing to pay an extra 8.89 USD/per kg rice/year for the paddy for a decrease in temperature by 1 °C in the regional microclimate due to the paddy field. Furthermore, this study applied the benefits transfer method to evaluate the value of a decrease of 1 °C in the regional microclimate in Taiwan. The value of a decrease of 1 °C in the regional microclimate in Taiwan is 9,693,144,279 USD/year. In this regard, the economic value of 1 °C must not be underestimated. In conclusion, more caution is needed while making decisions to change the land use of paddy fields to other land uses.

This paper illustrates a proposed method for the retrieval of land surface temperature (LST) from the two thermal bands of the LANDSAT-8 data. LANDSAT-8, the latest satellite from Landsat series, launched on 11 February 2013, using LANDSAT-8 Operational Line Imager and Thermal Infrared Sensor (OLI & TIRS) satellite data. LANDSAT-8 medium spatial resolution multispectral imagery presents particular interest in extracting land cover, because of the fine spectral resolution, the radiometric quantization of 12 bits. In this search a trial has been made to estimate LST over Al-Hashimiya district, south of Babylon province, middle of Iraq. Two dates images acquired on 2nd &18th of March 2018 to retrieve LST and compare them with ground truth data from infrared thermometer camera (all the measurements contacted with target by using type-k thermocouple) at the same time of images capture. The results showed that the rivers had a higher LST which is different to the other land cover types, of less than 3.47 C ◦, and the LST different for vegetation and residential area were less than 0.4 C ◦ with correlation coefficient of the two bands 10 and 11 Rbnad10= 0.70, Rband11 = 0.89 respectively, for the imaged acquired on the 2nd of march 2018 and Rband10= 0.70 and Rband11 = 0.72 on the 18th of march 2018. These results confirm that the proposed approach is effective for the retrieval of LST from the LANDSAT-8 Thermal bands, and the IR thermometer camera data which is an effective way to validate and improve the performance of LST retrieval. Generally the results show that the closer measurement taken from the scene center time, a better quality to classify the land cover. The purpose of this study is to assess the use of LANDSAT-8 data to specify temperature differences in land cover and compare the relationship between land surface temperature and land cover types.

ABSTRACTPrecocial birds hatch feathered and mobile, but when they become fully endothermic soon after hatching, their heat loss is high and they may become energy depleted. These chicks could benefit from using energy-conserving torpor, which is characterised by controlled reductions of metabolism and body temperature (Tb). We investigated at what age the precocial king quail Coturnix chinensis can defend a high Tb under a mild thermal challenge and whether they can express torpor soon after achieving endothermy to overcome energetic and thermal challenges. Measurements of surface temperature (Ts) using an infrared thermometer showed that king quail chicks are partially endothermic at 2–10 days, but can defend high Tb at a body mass of ∼13 g. Two chicks expressed shallow nocturnal torpor at 14 and 17 days for 4–5 h with a reduction of metabolism by >40% and another approached the torpor threshold. Although chicks were able to rewarm endogenously from the first torpor bout, metabolism and Ts decreased again by the end of the night, but they rewarmed passively when removed from the chamber. The total metabolic rate increased with body mass. All chicks measured showed a greater reduction of nocturnal metabolism than previously reported in quails. Our data show that shallow torpor can be expressed during the early postnatal phase of quails, when thermoregulatory efficiency is still developing, but heat loss is high. We suggest that torpor may be a common strategy for overcoming challenging conditions during development in small precocial and not only altricial birds.
