Various engineering programs in North America enable students to immerse in international projects. Some students travel with NGOs and perform engineering work as part of their curriculum, and some design projects for hypothetical clients in other parts of the world. The authors designed a charcoal press for Kenyan farmers as part of their 2nd year design class. Due to the success of the design, the project was brought to Kenya, and was modified to be built to the materials and equipment that were available in the rural communities. One of the authors travelled to deliver the design, participated in building the device, as well as trained the clients to perform the process. The second author stayed in Canada.The authors present their experience on this two-stage design process, where the students were exposed in both designing from a distance and being immersed in the international setting of the project. Writing from students’ perspective, different points on how the project was effective on engraving design principles to students were shared. Students also reflected on their experience and developed recommendations on how the experience can be improved for future students who will take similar programs

This chapter discusses the impact of stage design on musical theatre, and the development of musical theatre as a product packaged for consumption across the world. Its focus is chiefly on British musicals of the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, during which ‘scenography’ has become recognized as the term for describing the whole theatre-designed space, encompassing, set, costume, sound, light, and more recently including film, animations, and a host of projection technologies and digital media. The chapter refers to contemporary reviews of productions, their success and failure, and the nature of the musical as a form in harmony with new scenic production aesthetics. What becomes apparent in this chapter is the interconnectedness of scenic practices and production aesthetics, which relates directly to the visual impact of musicals on the British stage and the interchange of production styles and modes of the UK and North America.

Abstract. A reliable and up-to-date ship emission inventory is essential for atmospheric scientists quantifying the impact of shipping and for policy makers implementing regulations and incentives for emission reduction. The emission modelling in this study takes into account ship type and size dependent input data for 15 ship types and 7 size categories. Global port arrival and departure data for more than 32 000 merchant ships are used to establish operational profiles for the ship segments. The modelled total fuel consumption amounts to 217 Mt in 2004 of which 11 Mt is consumed in in-port operations. This is in agreement with international sales statistics. The modelled fuel consumption is applied to develop global emission inventories for CO2, NO2, SO2, CO, CH4, VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds), N2O, BC (Black Carbon) and OC (Organic Carbon). The global emissions from ships at sea and in ports are distributed geographically, applying extended geographical data sets covering about 2 million global ship observations and global port data for 32 000 ships. In addition to inventories for the world fleet, inventories are produced separately for the three dominating ship types, using ship type specific emission modelling and traffic distributions. A global Chemical Transport Model (CTM) was used to calculate the environmental impacts of the emissions. We find that ship emissions is a dominant contributor over much of the world oceans to surface concentrations of NO2 and SO2. The contribution is also large over some coastal zones. For surface ozone the contribution is high over the oceans but clearly also of importance over western North America (contribution 15–25%) and western Europe (5–15%). The contribution to tropospheric column ozone is up to 5–6%. The overall impact of ship emissions on global methane lifetime is large due to the high NOx emissions. With regard to acidification we find that ships contribute 11% to nitrate wet deposition and 4.5% to sulphur wet deposition globally. In certain coastal regions the contributions may be in the range 15–50%. In general we find that ship emissions have a large impact on acidic deposition and surface ozone in western North America, Scandinavia, western Europe, western North Africa and Malaysia/Indonesia. For most of these regions container traffic, the largest emitter by ship type, has the largest impact. This is the case especially for the Pacific and the related container trade routes between Asia and North America. However, the contributions from bulk ships and tank vessels are also significant in the above mentioned impact regions. Though the total ship impact at low latitudes is lower, the tank vessels have a quite large contribution at low latitudes and near the Gulf of Mexico and Middle East. The bulk ships are characterized by large impact in Oceania compared to other ship types. In Scandinavia and north-western Europe, one of the major ship impact regions, the three largest ship types have rather small relative contributions. The impact in this region is probably dominated by smaller ships operating closer to the coast. For emissions in ports impacts on NO2 and SO2 seem to be of significance. For most ports the contribution to the two components is in the range 0.5–5%, for a few ports it exceeds 10%. The approach presented provides an improvement in characterizing fleet operational patterns, and thereby ship emissions and impacts. Furthermore, the study shows where emission reductions can be applied to most effectively minimize the impacts by different ship types.

Abstract This article aims to analyze the impact of domestic politics and international changes that influence Brazilian positions regarding regional integration processes in South America, particularly the Southern Common Market, Mercosur. The dynamics of the international system and their impact on the evolution of the elite's perception of the role the country should play in the world are important variables for understanding these positions. The state's postures in relation to integration were and are based on a real interest, but this interest is also linked with the objective of ensuring better conditions for participation in other international arenas. Starting with the hypothesis that transformations in the international setting have strongly influenced Brazil's positioning, the elements of continuity and change in the country's behavior toward Mercosur are identified, with domestic politics as the main explanation.

The world oil market is changing rapidly, there rises a new global center of world oil production – North America, which production opportunities are estimated by experts as outperforming those of Middle East. This is made possible thanks to inception of commercial oil production from oil shale in North America. The article deals with the problems and prospects of the development of shale oil in the U.S. and the impact of the growth of its production on the configuration of the world oil market.

Since the 1980s, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) social movements worldwide have put significant energy into securing relationship rights. In the 1970s, however, the general sentiment in such movements in the Occident had been anti-marriage and anti-nuclear family. This changed in the 1980s due to three factors: the impact of HIV/AIDS, which emphasized how vulnerable same-sex families are; the rise of families headed by same-sex parents who did not have the same protections as their different-sex counterparts; and globalization, which transferred the ideas about same-sex relationships among movements and created energy and useful policy connections. During the 1990s, a wave of marriage alternatives spread around the world, sometimes extended by legislatures and other times by courts. The rise of alternatives has raised these questions: are they a temporary compromise on the path to marriage equality; are they a replacement for marriage that is free of its historical discriminatory heritage; or are they proposing an additional legal institution alongside marriage? In the 2000s and since, marriage equality became realistic and more common as two dozen countries gradually extended marriage rights to same-sex couples, initially in Europe and North America, but later also in Australasia, in the entire Americas, and even—in fewer countries—in Asia and Africa. Incrementalism is the generally accepted theory for why progress occurs in some countries and delays in others. However, scholars have criticized the theory as descriptively inaccurate and, normatively, as portraying marriage as the final frontier for LGBTQ equality—thus contributing to that community’s emphasis on marriage equality to the neglect of other possible advocacy avenues. Further, the incrementalistic account should take into consideration that the path toward recognition is not linear and is international as well as national. Supranational courts have played an important role in the progress toward recognizing same-sex relationships; at the same time, the globalization of LGBTQ relationship rights has also resulted in a strong backlash and in regression in some countries.

A historian, like any other scholar, incurs many debts. I am no exception. I would like to begin this occasion by acknowledging some of those debts. I have benefited greatly from the generosity of colleagues—from the generosity of colleagues in my particular field of Islamic and South Asian history in North America, Europe and the Subcontinent, but also from the generosity of historians in general. It is a great privilege to work amongst historians in the University of London, who form arguably the largest group of historians in the world, that work together.

With the continuous development of human society, international meetings have increasingly become an important form of interaction and contact between countries around the world, and occupy a more and more prominent position in the international community. However, with the COVID-19 epidemic, the international meetings industry is in trouble. This paper empirically studies the impact of COVID-19 on the international meetings industry worldwide through a report published by CIMERT. Among the five globe regions, COVID-19 was found to have the greatest impact in Asia, followed by Africa, with Europe, North America and Latin America being the least affected. It was also found that, based on attendance, medium-sized meetings were the most affected followed by large meetings. The small and super large meetings, however, were the least affected. Finally, beneficial suggestions are made on how the meetings industry should develop in the future.

Many universities around the world are experiencing a decline in the number of students entering programs in surveying and geospatial engineering, including some institutions with prestigious pasts. For Australia, this raises the question of whether there will be adequate graduates in the future to replace the current cohort of surveying and geospatial professionals when they retire. It is not clear why it has not been possible to attract more school leavers into the surveying and geospatial programs, but it may be because the community at large is unaware of the many career opportunities. Several surveys have been carried out in Australia to determine the status of graduates entering the profession and the impact that shortages of graduates in the surveying and geospatial professions in the future. These shortages could seriously limit the development of infrastructure and housing if they are not overcome. Another issue is whether the demand for graduates is changing due to developments in technology that allow surveying and mapping to be undertaken more quickly and efficiently than in the past. Marketing of education programs into schools and the general population is essential. A solution maybe for a concerted global effort to encourage more school leavers to enrol in surveying and geospatial engineering programs and hence improve the viability of the profession for the future. The paper will review the impacts of shortages in graduates entering the profession and approaches to improve the marketing of the surveying and geospatial professions.

Introduction Healthcare faces growing challenges. With reports of diminishing research output from the UK and Ireland in the leading surgical journals, this study aimed to ascertain whether this trend had been echoed in the trauma and orthopaedic literature. Materials and methods Citable research output from the 10 globally leading trauma and orthopaedic journals was analysed from five individual years, over a 20-year period, to ascertain trends in absolute output, geographical mix, and level of evidence. Results The overall number of published articles fell by 14.5%. North America saw the greatest decline (–8.0%), followed by Japan (–5.6%) and Europe (–3.3%). The UK and Ireland (+2.9%) and the rest of the world (+13.9%) saw rising output. A decline in lower (levels IV and V) and a rise in higher (levels I, II and III) quality evidence was observed. The UK and Ireland had a greater proportion of higher-quality studies than North America and Japan, but lower than Europe and the rest of the world. The impact factor of the leading journal rose from 4.47 to 7.01. Discussion The research landscape has evolved, with leading journals placing greater emphasis on higher-quality evidence. UK and Irish research output remains stable, contributing 14% of the most highly cited publications in 2018, and challenging North America’s dominance with a greater proportion of level I and II evidence in the leading journals. Conclusion With the growing emergence of Europe and the rest of the world, UK and Irish authors must build upon the region’s output despite political challenges such as Brexit. Increasing international collaboration will continue to play an important role.
