While different approaches have been used to measure the human capital effect on company performance, it is less common testing the effects of the human capital as a source of value in a mostly unorganized sector like the wood and related industries in the Galicia (Spain) / Portugal region. The paper aims at measuring the effect of a single dimension of intellectual capital (human capital) and its value addition for the period of 2002-2017. The findings suggest that human capital is the main dimension that adds value to the wood sector, both in Portugal as well as in Galicia. This paper tests a new model to measure the effect of human capital to study its effects on the value addition to the wood sector.

In this study, the concept of intellectual capital and its components are examined first. Then, the standard features of intellectual capital and human capital with career capital are revealed. Moreover, finally, a new model has been proposed for the concept of intellectual capital. The study aims to show the bond of career capital in intellectual capital and to emphasise that it can be considered as a separate essential element. The theoretical model proposed by the study considered career capital as a sub-component of human capital within intellectual capital. Accordingly, human capital in the study consists of two main sub-components: attitude capital and career capital. The career capital supported by the attitude capital of the human can be evaluated as the whole capital in a concrete career life rather than the individual characteristics of the employee. The study aims to bring a different perspective to studies on the subject. It is the review of the related conceptual literature in order to contribute to the information in the relevant literature.

Intellectual capital which includes human capital, structural capital, and relational capital is able to improve the company's financial performance, which in turn will be able to increase investment. This investment will ultimately increase the market reaction which is reflected in the company's stock price (company value). Intellectual capital is also an impetus for companies to be able to grow sustainably, especially in terms of human capital owned by the company. Structural capital is one of the components of intellectual capital. The measurement is essential in order to obtain the real value of intellectual capital and its influence on the profitability of the business. The measurement of structural capital value addition can be done directly or via the mediating effect of another component of intellectual capital, i.e. human capital or relational capital. Human capital has been selected as the mediating component for this study based on findings of previous studies that advocate its importance as a major determinant that enhances structural capital changes. This paper aims at measuring the influence of human capital as a mediating factor on the capacity of structural capital value addition for the period of 2002-2018, for Galicia (Spain) and Portugal.
