The study was designed for 45 students (24 boys and 21 girls) attending the 5th grade primary school. Each child completed the Children’s Depression Inventory (Kovacs), Scale Sense of Personal Competence (self-efficacy) (Juczyński) and the Scale of Locus of Control ? Primary Schools (Mathiak, Seget, Karzel). Pearson’s were conducted to investigate correlation the variables with the intensity of depressive symptoms. Results. The prevalence rate of depressive symptoms in the group of investigate children was high and amounted to 37.8%. Both variables remained in correlation to the intensity of childhood depression. It was found that as the internal sense of control increased, the intensity of depressive symptoms decreased. Children with high level of self-efficacy of their own competence have manifest fewer depressive symptoms. Conclusions. Many children in the untreated group manifest symptoms of depression. high self-efficacy and internal sense of control are conducive to maintaining mental health in children. The promotion of these personal resources should constitute an important element of preventive strategies and programs, because strengthening the health potential of children will balance and reduce the impact of risk factors.

The current study investigates the effects of teacher support, school connectedness, and school socioeconomic status (SES) on youth depressive symptoms. Data were collected from a sample of 881 students in Grade 6 from 10 primary schools in Northwest China. Hierarchical linear modeling indicated that higher levels of teacher support, school connectedness, and school SES were significantly associated with fewer depressive symptoms. Further, the relationships between school-level SES and youth depressive symptoms varied by the participant’s perceived level of teacher support and perceived level of school connectedness. These findings underscore the importance of positive school experiences on child psychological outcomes. Implications for future research on Chinese youth are discussed.

This article demonstrates that the impact of role models (RMs) on students’ self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention is moderated by their entrepreneurial experience and personality variables such as self-esteem and locus of control. 276 students enrolled in an entrepreneurship education programs (EEPs) were exposed to either a positive or a negative sensitisation message by alumni who became entrepreneurs to test its impact on the students’ self-efficacy and entrepreneurial intention. Findings indicate that students with entrepreneurial experience, high self-esteem and internal locus of control are less impacted by entrepreneurial role models. We discuss the relevance and effectiveness of role models in EEPs.

Abstract This study intends to examine English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ attitudes toward practicing English in Second Life (SL) and to unpack the effects of avatar identities on EFL learners’ sense of self-efficacy and language practices. Nine EFL learners worldwide participated in a task-based course in SL, using avatars to carry out SL-related tasks while interacting with peers and the teacher via voice chat. Qualitative data were triangulated from multiple sources: learner reflective journals, a post-course survey, and semi-structured interviews. Three major themes emerged: (1) the effects of masked identity on learning, (2) the impact of telepresence and copresence on learning, and (3) the perceived attitudes toward avatar affinity. Findings implicate that the avatar form renders masked identities to safeguard learners’ self-efficacy and empower their language practices. It also opens up a research avenue on the impact of avatar identities on language learning and teaching in 3D virtual environments.

The literature on higher education supports the assumption that the integration of environmental and psychological factors are critical in influencing the intents of students to stay in college. Yet, questions exist on the impact faculty may have on student retention. This exploratory study examines perceptions of students about faculty in terms of relatedness, responsiveness, teaching quality, and treatment of students and how those perceptions impact students' own perceptions of their self-efficacy, locus of control, persistence, and commitment. Results yielded positive and significant correlations. Respondents identified specific attributes of faculty which could potentially enhance or frustrate their intentions to stay in college. Recommendations for promoting quality faculty-student interactions in and out of the classroom and the ethics of caring are discussed.

The impact of peoples orientation with regard to Collectivism/Individualism and to Locus of Control on the extent to which they are subject to social influence has never been investigated cross culturally in the context of consumer behavior in making purchasing decisions. The objective of this research is to compare the cultural orientations of people in the East and West, and to observe the effect of social influence in their decision making. In particular, this paper examines and adds evidence to the mutually exclusive cultures: Singapore, Thailand, Australia, and America. Hofstedes typology of cultures is reconfirmed and empirically associated with specific social influence variables on decision making. The findings provide either whole or partial supports for the hypotheses. In general, high collectivism is positively related with external locus of control and results in high level of social influence. There are exceptions, however, which highlight the need to incorporate other factors into understanding the role that cultural orientation plays in decision making.

The study aimed at investigating the level of some affective factors which influenced the English for Management Learning Achievement; and uncovering how, psychologically, those factors were felt by the students. The study had been carried out in three steps; first, theoretical and empirical study on affective factors yielded in six factors; second, data collection on those factors through questionnaires, and third, focused group discussion (FGD). The study applied mixed methods of data collection and analysis. Quantitative method using t test was applied to determine the level of determination of the six affective factors upon above average and low average students, respectively. Qualitative method was applied through FGD and descriptive analysis. The results of the análisis show that the level of anxiety and learned helplessness of the above average students is lower than of the below average ones; while the level of self efficacy, locus of control, interest, dan integrativeness of the above average students is higher than of the below average ones. For the above average students, low level of anxiety and learned helplessness supports learning, and high level of self-efficacy, locus of control, interest, dan integrativeness is a bid modality for their success. The below average students, however, tend to be stucked by high level of anxiety and learned helplessness which hinders their learning.

Introduction: Heart transplantation affects all spheres of the patients’ functioning - their physical well-being and coping with everyday situations, as well as their identity and social functioning. Its long-term effects depend on the effective cooperation with the transplant team. Post-transplant patients are expected to be committed to adherence to recommendations. Patients’ subjective characteristics could increase the risk of difficulties during treatment or might have a protective effect. The major aim of the study was to evaluate the level of engagement in health behavior in heart transplant recipients in relation to their personal resources, such as personality traits, and their health status.Material and Method: The observational ex post facto model was proposed. Participants completed a set of psychological questionnaires. In the study, there were used questionnaires regarding health behavior (HBI), personality traits (NEO-FFI), health locus of control (MHLC), self-efficacy (GSES) and health status (GHQ-28). The group included in the analyses consisted of 107 heart transplant patients. They ranged in age from 19 to 75 years; 10.3% of them were women. Results: According to norms, 71% patients reported high level of engagement in health behavior. There were significant differences in the level of dietary habits and other types of health behaviors. The best predictors of overall health behavior were conscientiousness (β = 0.20, p < 0.05) and health locus of control (Powerful Others) (β = 0.25, p < 0.05). The prophylaxis behavior was related significantly to the level of conscientiousness (p < 0.05) and health locus of control (Internal and Powerful Others) (p < 0.05; p < 0.01). The level of positive mental attitude was related significantly to agreeableness (p < 0.05), health locus of control (Powerful Others) (p < 0.01), and self-efficacy (p < 0.01). Everyday healthy practices were related significantly to openness to experience (p < 0.01) and health locus of control (all categories: Internal, Powerful Others and Chance) (p < 0.05; p < 0.01; p < 0.05, respectively). Conclusion: Majority of heart transplant patients is engaged in high level of health behavior. Among the various forms of health-relevant habits, heart transplant patients adhere significantly less frequently to a healthy diet. Among examined resources, the best predictors of caring about health are generalized self-efficacy and age at the time of HTx.
